Please just spell your words! so everyone knows what you're talking about. Is there a good reason for not doing so?

Such things as typing "HAL" for "Holland America Line" make sense on this forum (perhaps not elsewhere), and "DH/DW" are in common usage, and make sense, too---at least to me.

But typing "u" when you mean "you", or "r" when you mean "are", is not using acronyms, and I agree with you they should be spelled out.

I remember a great story about the mayor of our city going to meet Senator Boxer in Washington D.C. They were talking and he was using a lot of acronyms. She said, "Excuse me Mr. Mayor but could you please use plain English?"

I worked for the government for over 33 years. Everything was acronyms or form numbers. We had to make a conscious effort to speak in plain English when talking to clients, and it wasn't always an easy thing to do! :o

I agree it's not easy. I was in education and we also had our share of acronyms.

Yes, for me plain and simple answer is that I wish to be understood by people, not just on these boards, but in real life also. I need to know what SWAK means so that I do not SMACK the person who says it to me when I should be hugging them:)

Seriously though, it is sometimes much easier for us to speak in acronyms and be understood than it is to spell it out completely and be misunderstood.
