Passengers behaving badly !

Tizzy

Recommended Posts

I always read the P&O forum as our son works as a photographer on the P&O ships.

I am yet to be tempted to cruise with P&O as I read so many awful comments about the passengers on these threads.

Rum Rat has a thread running at the moment.

We were booked on a short cruise last year but due to circumstances beyond our control had to cancel. I have never felt like re-booking.

We usually cruise with Carnival or Royal Caribbean as we prefer the American ships and never come accross what can only be described as the bitchiness on UK ships.

My son does remind me that there are lots of very nice people sailing with P&O and is trying his hardest to encourage us to book a cruise but judging by the way people treat the photographers I am not sure I want to be around when they are being abused by rude passengers.

We have sailed P & O , Princess, NCL & a Thomson cruise ( which was great- lovely staff and passengers).

The worst cruise for obnoxious passengers was our last one, on a Princess ship out of New York. We have never met so many horrible people in one place!

There were some really great people on board, but it was hard to avoid the problem ones.

According to a few Americans, it's New Yorkers!!

On our P & O voyages we have come across some really nice people, a few ok ones and only one or two bad un's.

tbh, you are going to get rude people in all walks of life, who are lacking in manners, but whatever cruise we have been on, have not witnessed any rude behavior, just moans and groans,..justifyed or not.

i would also like to add, that the only person that has ever been rude, was a photographer on our last cruise earlier this year.

My daughter needed to disembark asap in one port, and having spoken to s senior officer, he took her to a place to wait, to enable her to leave as the as ship had been cleared for passengers to go ashore.

A female photographer came along, and told her to move, and go back to the decks, she tried to explain, but photographer was so rude, would not listen, ushered her back upstairs, and made a very stressful situation worse.

Photographers are good at what they do, but outside that, perhaps a little more training is needed, although generally the photographers are a great bunch, and a real asset to the ships.

Just one bad apple i guess.

Rude passengers are not just confined to P & O, indeed, on cruising with P & O we have yet to come across any obnoxious passengers. As with all cruise lines, avoiding school holidays helps. The other thing is that short cruises are sometimes treated as booze cruises by some passengers, especially two or three days. It is known that the longer the cruise, normally the older the average age becomes. Take the plunge, book a 7 day cruise and enjoy yourself.

Oh please..people from NY are no different than other people and to lump them all in one basket is ridiculous. You will find nasty people all over the world.

Saying that about NY residents is like saying that everyone from the UK is a stick in the mud.;)

well if i were you i'd book and make your own mind up. Too many people on here are just on the wind up. I've very rarely seen bad behaviour and with the exception of one upper class toss pot, met somoe very lovely people.

Whilst i respect your son for the job he does i can understand why he gets the brunt of the rude passengers. Photographers can be a bit in the way sometimes. One of the photographers on Ventura was very rude to me. Having said that they have a job to do and a polit no thanks from passengers is all that is required.

It is not always the passengers that are rude.On the Aurora approx 4 years ago we encountered the most unpleaseant photograher imaginable. On formal nights we refused any contact with him at dinner and requested someone else take pictures.

on our cruise azura transatlantic 15 nights it was not the children,or young adults that where the problem it was the older generation. we have been on auroura 2 night party cruise as well and the young adults were fine.

i think some of the older generation are a bit stuck up wanting to pay as little as possible but still get all the luxury .

As I said in a earlier thread there are all sorts of people onboard for all walks of life. It would be madness not to book a cruise on a P&O ship because a couple of people said they met a few rude people onboard! You will meet a few snobs who treat the waiters like muck on their feet, and try to belittle anyone they meet who is in less than a Suite, you will meet 'Chavs' too - so what? Ignore them and enjoy your holiday.

There are people like this no doubt on all the ships at sea.

It really saddens me when the Photographers get so much criticism.

I have had the good fortune to meet many of them and they were all charming with impeccable manners.

They work impossibly long hours on some of the ships and remember they are paid on commission so have to sell to survive.

I cannot understand the rude individuals who swear at them to go away or even push them away.

They have to do their job and if that includes patrolling the Dining Rooms or wherever, thats what they have to do.

I guess we have just been lucky on the American Ships, people really don't seem to moan as much. We also enjoyed our Cruise with Princess but it all depends who is onboard at the time I guess.

Personally I think the ships are getting too big and this causes too much stress with everybody. On a recent Royal Caribbean cruise we were so close to the next table at Dinner we might as well have had them pushed together. Perhaps the company don't like people requesting a table for two, something we like to do occasionally.

It wasn't me who said that about New Yorkers but other Americans!

And funnily enough I have just come in from feeding the hens and got my boot stuck in the mud!! So you might be right:D

Personally, I object to photographers coming round the restaurants, particually on formal nights causing complete chaos re arranging the table, whilst you are eating your meal. Some of them will not take no for an answer.

Richard

They do seem to when you look them straight in the eye and say "What part of 'NO' do you not understand"

We have met really friendly people on P&O and have also met one or two people we've got little in common with... but that's life. However, although we love Celebrity, we had a cruise on Equinox a couple of years ago and we met more unpleasant, self-centred people on that cruise than we've met in our lifetime. I would say definitely try P&O: choose an itinerary you like and you'll have a great time. And I have to say the entertainment on P&O is, imo. the best of all the lines we've used and much better than Celebrity and Princess.

The only rude people I ever saw were;

1. A group of 4 in a theatre box on Queen Victoria, who were very drunk and laughing loudly among themselves while not watching the show.

2. A passenger who ran all the way down the stairs on Aurora past the rest of us queueing for an excursion. He was sent back, but only went back a few places

3. All the people on any ship who use moble phones to video shows - it's really bad when they are right in front of you.

Richard, a polite no thank you always suffice with us, & Mike, I'm afraid that is the sort of answer to upset people just trying to do their job.

Adamara I am sorry you feel so strongly about having your meal interrupted but this is the time most people like to have their photograph taken. They are dressed up nicely and usually with new friends they have made at the table. As for Rum Rat I sincerely hope you are not on Arcadia in the near future. You only have to say 'No thank you' politely and you will be left alone ! It is beginning to look like you only come on this site to wind people up. Perhaps you could explain the Welsh joke, asI for one did not understand it.

I guess I have no objection to photographers coming round the restaurant as such - but I do wish they would wait until you are between courses. During one cruise, we were approached on 2 occasions while eating & being on a table for two, one of us was expected to get up & stand behind the other (rather than a case of leaning together when on a larger table).

We simply said no thank you & they went away - if they had waited, we probably would have said ok then.

(If we really want our pictures taken we go to find them before dinner (if we have time between cocktails ;) ))

Hello Karen.

I do understand people don't like having their meal interrupted and I for one hate having to stand up while having a meal. Perhaps I have been lucky but we have never been hassled by any photographer and we have been on many, many cruises. Perhaps I am a bit sensitive but I hate rude loud people and I know first hand how hard the Photographers work, and how bone tired they are at the end of the day. All that camera equipment is very heavy when you are running up and down stairs all day & night.

I agree with the others who have posted. You are going to find rude objectionable people in all walks of life, therefore there will be one or two on a cruise ship. New Yorkers, from my experience as a stewardess, are en masse quite demanding, although one shouldn't generalise, it's difficult not to.

It certainly wouldn't stop me booking a cruise. We have made some firm friends from a couple of cruises.

The photographers do get in your face sometimes. Really annoys me during dinner and they won't take 'no' for an answer!

With only one exception, I've always found the photographers on P&O to be polite, professional and friendly. A polite "thanks but no thanks" when they offer to take my photograph usually works; occasionally they'll be a little bit insistent but always remain polite.

As a photographer myself I'll chat with them when they aren't busy; I've picked up some good tips from some of the more experienced ship's photographers. And heard a few good stories...which I promised not to pass on. :)

I can't say I've met with anyone really objectional on any of the 5 lines we've tried....a few show offs, and the odd rude guest, esp. some lottery winners who were quaffing the champagne everywhere...it was only childish behaviour, and if I'd won the lottery, who knows how I'd have behaved! A photographer came into Marco Pierre White's on Ventura, on our 30th anniversary. His photo still takes pride of place on our mantel, and has been commented on every time.

Mainly, on P&O, I've met every sort of person you'll meet in your supermarket....some are good to talk with, some aren't happy with socialising away from home, some have to push themselves forward because they don't know how to get a response. Just....people, the same as everywhere. :)

Have cruised with P&O and with Princess and without a shadow of a doubt the guys on princess were ruder... especially to the staff. But then there are nice and rude people on every ship - you can't stick even 500 people together and expect them all to see eye to eye about everything and couple will be rude... can't tar the whole lot with the same brush.

Bx

PS I've never had my photo taken once on the ships (I don't like it) and I've never felt that when I said 'no' that I was pushed into having it taken... perhaps Im more assertive than most...??
