hapicruisin Posted February 9, 2011 #51 Share Posted February 9, 2011 Our first cruise was a very port intensive Med cruise. It was wonderful but after l0 days we were exhausted and needed a holiday when we got home. I love transatlantic cruises and have now taken 4 or 5 and as along as we are on a small/ish ship with good food I could stay on it forever. How lovely to be pampered with no rushing around. Somebody else doing the cooking and cleaning etc. - bliss.:):):)
cb at sea Posted February 9, 2011 #52 Share Posted February 9, 2011 Hubby hates sea days....he can manage 1 or 2, but not in a row, and not more than that! I could sit by the pool all day, everyday....but if the weather wasn't great, I wouldn't care for them, either. Not of fan of "activities"! Rare geoherb Posted February 9, 2011 #53 Share Posted February 9, 2011 I love sea days. There are lots of activities if you want to join in--trivia, sports tournaments (mini golf, table tennis, basketball shooting), pool games, movies, lectures, dance classes. Or you can just relax by the pool, or do a spa treatment, or read a book on the Promenade Deck. We enjoy sea days so much that a lot of times we don't get off the ship when it docks in the port. There are not as many activities on those days, but the ship is a lot less crowded.

chasm4u Posted February 9, 2011 #55 Share Posted February 9, 2011 Sea days are great! If you don't like the sea, don't get on a ship! Thats a totaly subjective comment. UKBayern Posted February 9, 2011 #56 Share Posted February 9, 2011 Thats a totaly subjective comment. In response I say if you dont like visitng ports dont get on a ship. :) Good one. Still; we like some sea days to rest up; and we are 37 and 41 years old, fit, and active, so it is not a matter of medical nescessity. We like to dance until 1 am at least if there is any party location still going. Again; this also is a subjective opinion. Our latest cruise had 4 ports in a row and we decided 'never again', partly because 2 of them were 'big ones', Istanbul and Athens, also coming just after 2 days Egypt with only one day in between, which meant we ended up far too tired. We are tired enough going on holiday, don't need to come back more fatigued. We were about ready to book an all-inlusive resort with a pool and a sun-lounger next time and bring a stack of books: but no we probably won't, we are pretty much hooked on cruising. Or next to last cruise had - for us - the perfect schedule with alternating port days and sea day for almost 2 weeks. Great balance.
aohkay Posted February 10, 2011 #57 Share Posted February 10, 2011 Our last cruise was 12 ports in 12 days, ugh! Although it was fun, it was also exhausting. Next cruise will definitely have some sea days!
Azure Moon Posted February 10, 2011 #58 Share Posted February 10, 2011 I like having a couple of sea days on a seven day cruise. I like one sea day near the beginning and one towards the end of the trip. I like just sitting and reading, people watching, lounging in the shade, attending activities, listening to the musicians and singers, watching a movie, exploring the ship, losing a few dollars in the casino slots, and eating. Taxguy77 Posted February 10, 2011 #59 Share Posted February 10, 2011 Sea Days' date=' love sea days. In my perfect world there would be no more than 2 port days between sea days. Pour a nice glass of red wine, sit out on the balcony put my feet up and read a good book while the sea sails by...heaven.[/quote'] Why use a ship to see ports? The smallest hotel room is bigger than the average ship stateroom, and you can see a lot of things after the ships leave. Ships are great for discovering places you want to see more, or less, of at a later time.
Mrs.C05 Posted February 10, 2011 #60 Share Posted February 10, 2011 DH and I get to enjoy each other, spend quality time and generally relax together. Its a nice change from our regular life! ;) This is exactly why we're going and looking towards it so very much!:D
Rare Hlitner Posted February 10, 2011 #61 Share Posted February 10, 2011 Thats a totaly subjective comment. In response I say if you dont like visitng ports dont get on a ship. :) Trying to understand your point. Folks that do not like ports will often take cruises and simply stay on the ship when its in port (often the best time to be on a ship). These folks are not the ones complaining since they have a choice to either get on or off the ship. But for folks who do not like sea days they have little choice other then to not take a cruise with sea days or deal with their own issues. Hank My point is The person I was replying to said a statement which can go either way and really matters on the person therefore really doesnt make sense. I said it in reverse to prove that it really doesnt make sense. lol Thats all Its was like saying if you dont like hamburgers dont go to mcdonalds. Well one could also say if you dont like french fries or shakes or snack wraps dont go to mcdonlands. Everyone likes what they like. lol Nothing wrong with either one. that was my point. I for one dont care for sea days but do not condemn those that love them!

beachchick Posted February 10, 2011 #64 Share Posted February 10, 2011 No, it's not just you. However, we don't actually hate sea days. One here and there during a cruise is great for relaxing between ports. More than that, no thank you. We would not do a TA or any cruise with many sea days in a row. beachchick
winncruiser Posted February 11, 2011 Author #65 Share Posted February 11, 2011 I should not have used such a stong word as "hate" because in fact I do not actually hate them I just prefer days in port, expecially in the Med where every place is so gorgeous and different and wonderful. Happy sailing to all and thank you for your very thoughtful responses.
suntan Posted February 11, 2011 #66 Share Posted February 11, 2011 I like sea days especially right at the very beginning of the cruise. As some of us do, we work right up until the day of the cruise. I take that sea day as my first day to relax and get into vacation mode. I also like the sea day at the end to again, relax. I know it may sound a bit funny to have to relax at the end of the cruise but I'm always off the ship doing something, exploring the island, snorkeling, etc. I need to relax before heading home and to the everyday stresses of life. Zubsin Posted February 11, 2011 #67 Share Posted February 11, 2011 I dread days at sea. This summer a group of us are cruising the mexican riviera and we have 3 days at sea...I think I'll go NUTS! I don't mind one every seven days or so but 3 geez.....if I wanted to relax....hmmmm I guess I don't want to! BUT there are some places I really want to see for if I must endure day or two at sea.....damn.....I prefer ports ports and more ports. Guess we won't be taking a TA anytime soon...Donna

DonMar Posted February 11, 2011 #70 Share Posted February 11, 2011 I love sea days. I will not book a cruise with port visits each day. I look for cruises that have a nice mix of interesting ports and a number of sea days. Our last cruise to the eastern med was great (IMHO) - sea day, port, sea day port and so on. I don't give a hoot about where the ship is going. The more sea days, the better. Just came off the Pride in January.....colder'n heck, too. It ported at Cape Canaveral for the Disney junkies.....didn't get off the ship...then, headed to Nassau...just got off to see what new stuff was in the Festival Harborplace, grabbed a conch sandwich and a cold one..and back on the ship. In Freeport, stayed on, watching the activity in the harbor, enjoying the "warmth" of my balcony.... There are few Caribbean ports where I get off. Have been so many times, land and sea, over 30 years. I'll get off to have lunch at a fave restaurant or to meet up with friends who live there...but, that's it... I just love being at sea...and love the cruise experience...
sngleme121 Posted February 11, 2011 #72 Share Posted February 11, 2011 I absolutely love doing "nothing" on sea days. In fact before I cruised my vacations were spent frantically going from here to there trying to "see" everything. When I went on my first RCI cruise in 2008, I got a bad cold on the 3rd day of a 7 day cruise. My cousin was gettng married and so we had a lot of people there. We had scheduled an excursion that I went on even though I felt lousy but the rest of the time I rested and napped. It was the best time EVER even though I didn't feel good. I was determined that ANY vacation I go on from now on must include REST DAYS because that really is the beauty of a vacation. SEA DAYS ROCK! It's an effort to dress for dinner...or move myself off the balcony. As much as I love trivia....afternoon tea....they are missed more often than not..... Now, when I was a young, tight-bodied, good looking broad, I was an all-night partier, a tabledancer and had a whale of a time. Now, I'm a grey haired, wrinkled, slightly saggy 70..who enjoys cruising for the sea... I do enjoy watching the youngsters having a great time...if I could only keep my eyes open past 11PM.....:D

RoofingPrincess Posted February 11, 2011 #75 Share Posted February 11, 2011 I like them sprinkled into my cruise. When we're in port, I want to go-see-do. Too many of those in a row, and I'm pooped! I could never do the 12-ports-in-12-days cruise. Sea days are actually one of the good things about sailing an Eastern Caribbean cruise out of the NYC area: 2 sea days going down (to get out of work mode) and 2 coming back (to rest up after go-see-do). HOWEVER, too many of them in a row would drive me nuts. As scheduled, my westbound transatlantic was perfect: 3 port days, then 2 sea days, 2 port days, 2 sea days, a port, sea, port, sea, final destination. Unfortunately, as we were leaving Iceland (that 2-port-day section), the Captain informed us that there was an ugly Arctic storm that we needed to go around, and we'd be missing our first Canadian port stop. So suddenly we had 5 consecutive sea days! This experience helped me discover that as much as I'd like to take a repo cruise from Spain to the US, I probably won't because of the large number of sea days in the middle.
