Profane balcony neighbors

We are just back from the Sapphire. We had a mini suite and were so sad when we stepped out on our balcony and heard our neighbors. The woman was very loud and loved adjectives, but only knew one. Example: "the atrium is just a blankin mall.". When she sneezed people several levels above and several cabins aft said "bless you." She responded, "oh, you can hear me" and others in an even more distant cabin answered "so can we." Her male companion responded by bellowing that they need blessings not for sneezing but in the blankin casino. And they both became louder and more profane (that is more frequency, not more variety). The woman then threw the remainder of the contents of her glass overboard. I turned my iPod all the way up and tried to enjoy sail away. The next morning, when leaving for breakfast, a tray of at least a dozen glasses of orange juice was delivered to their room. Juice is only free at breakfast. Then she popped her head out the door and yelled for the cabin steward to bring her ice. I feared they planned to spend all day on their balcony drinking and cursing. After breakfast, I reviewed the Princess policy on noise, it only stated that we keep the TV down at night. There was no formal policy about loud cursing. So I wasn't sure if calling the front desk would help. But I am sure someone did report them because after breakfast they were quiet at church mice for the rest of the trip. Thank you to whoever made the call.

And people dread kids on a cruise. Personally, it's the loud, drunk adults that drive me crazy.

Our balcony neighbor last month was always either smoking or cursing. The cursing usually occurred when he was on the balcony by himself. I think maybe he was reading emails or news online and "editorializing"--but I'm not sure. It was a little weird--okay, a lot weird. It wasn't muttering under his breath, either...it was one of those loud, deep, raspy voices that carries.

It's usually unparented kids in the adjoining

balcony cabin that drive me nuts....but my

God, that takes the cake. Nothing worse than

having obnoxious cabin neighbors like that

when on a relaxing (and expensive) vacation.

We've always been very lucky with adjoining cabins! Glad it ended after the first day and didn't impact your vacation.

The value of a balcony went to zero on our Alaska cruise the day we were in Glacier Bay. Viewing the Margarite Glacier, it seemed to be National Foul Language Day among balcony pax. :mad:

 

We went 'up on deck' where things were far less colorful :rolleyes:.

We had the same thing happen at Glacier Bay... except the neighbors were chain smokers AND liked to curse AND had a crying baby. I'm not joking... Like you, we enjoyed the view from other areas...

Our neighbors were smokers too, but we were upwind of them, which helped a bit. Anyway being upwind did not help with the cursing. I wonder if part of the problem is that Princess has had to lower their prices so much on the Mexican Riviera route that we are getting Carnival types (but even on Carnival I would guess that passengers this obnoxious are rare).

 

Yet one plus of the low price is that we were easily able to try a mini suite. I had wondered for some time if it would be significantly better than just a regular balcony. For us it was. We liked the sofa and the tub and we spent more time in our cabin that we did when we had just balcony cabins. Even if the balcony had remained unusable we would still strongly consider the mini suite just for the extra room, and it still would have a nice picture window. However, we were lucky to be able to enjoy our balcony often.

Well, our cruise was not the M.R., but 2 weeks out of San Juan. The couple was from Wisconsin, and I heard them say, more than once, that friends had tried to talk them into vacationing in Florida for a couple of weeks, but that by the time you counted in food, etc., cruising was way cheaper.

Oh I don't know about that... on my first cruise on the Island Princess, we stopped at Cozumel and were docked next to Carnival's Sensation. Granted they were apparently on a 4-day booze cruise from Tampa, but you could certainly pick out which folks were walking back to the Princess ship and which ones were... um... staggering back to the Carnival ship... ;):):rolleyes:

Whether in a hotel or on a cruise if someone is distrubing my peace I alwys call someone in authority and make a complaint. This usually solves the problem.

I'm glad the problem was solved early on in the cruise. Obnoxious neighbors can really affect a vacation. If only everybody could just be considerate of others.

We also noticed a lady in the MDR loudly sucking her fingers after using them (rather than a knife) to get food on her fork. The next day at lunch we saw three generations of a family sharing a table, all chewing with their mouths open. None of these things ruined our lunches, but I never remember noticing these behaviors on Princess before.

On my last cruise I walked into a ladies restroom and witnessed a woman with her sweater pulled above her head as she washed her armpits.

Someone mentioned the lower cost of cruising and less refined passengers. I met a young man last week who overheard my mom and

I talking about going on a cruise. It turns out he was on this same

sailing as the OP. He was very nice. It turns out he and 100 others

didn't pay a cent for this cruise on the Sapphire. He stated he works

for the local car dealership, and he won this cruise, along with other salesmen from around CA. He also stated that they were all being put

up in mini-suites, so I'm wondering if the OP's balcony neighbor might

have "won" their cruise too.

 

The young man I spoke with seemed lovely, but he also stated neither

he nor his wife had cruised before, so I'm wondering if this could have been

the case with the OP's balcony neighbor? When people don't have to

pay for something themselves or work as hard for something, sometimes

there is little respect for the product or other people.

 

We once were on the Sapphire when a lot of Geico employees were aboard as well, but we didn't have any rude occurrences.

I think you will be fine without a balcony, I would be. We did not notice chair hogs on this sailing. In fact plenty of steamer chairs were available on the promenade deck and plenty were available in sunny areas too. I often think that the risks associated with a balcony make it less worth the extra cost and have enjoyed every cruise we have taken, even insides (in fact our best cruise was in an inside). But DH now insists on a balcony. Later I will post more thoughts on this and the smoking issue. I will probably post these thoughts on the Celebrity board because I want to comply with what the hosts have asked here about talking about smoking.
