Straw Hats

Recommended Posts

Does anyone wear hats like these to the beach? Or on a cruise?

http://www.chicos.com/store/browse/product.jsp?maxRec=127&pageId=6&productId=570011592&viewAll=&prd=Straw+Sparkle+Large+Brim+Hat&subCatId=&color=&fromSearch=&inSeam=&posId=14&catId=cat40006&cat=Accessories&onSale=&colorFamily=&maxPg=8&size=

I think this is just too cute and have been wanting one for a while. I can use it when going to our lake beach also, but is it a waste to bring on a cruise?

Mind you, I've been on many cruises but am new to hats. :p

It's a lovely hat! Go for it:D

Saw plenty of stylish hats like that on the 2 7 day b2b's in the Caribbean that we have just returned from. I wore something in a similar style myself but not made of straw.

Folks were wearing them on the pool deck and around the ship as well as ashore.

Thanks for your response lili.. I wasn't sure if others brought these on cruises, so I'm glad you did.. I guess I never noticed until I was interested in getting my own hat. :)

Not a waste, but be careful of it blowing off on a sea day.

I was wondering about that! That's one of the reasons I thought it may not be appropriate :p

Yes hats are great! I just started buying them last summer. I would recommend one with UPF If you have a TJ MAXX, Steinmart or DSW near you they sell upf hats for around $20.

Great idea! Thanks! And speaking of Steinmart, I went to one for the first time recently and it turns out the store is closing. But the ladies on here speak so highly of it that I was excited to finally browse in one.

I've seen some wear hats similar to that one.

Keith

Thanks, Keith!

The fit is important for making sure it's secure on your head at sea and on land.

My hat was white fabric - the band fit snugly but not tightly around the forehead and hat, even on the promenade deck it usually stayed on without being held. It didn't have a chin strap. There were only a couple of occasions when it was really windy e.g. we had been allowed onto the helipad for sailaway but had to leave when it was so windy folks were having difficulty standing still, then I had to hold on the hat.

Just so you get some idea, this was similar to my hat

My wide brim floppy is ready to escort me to the Oasis. So picture this....my entrance is going to sort of be like a scene from The Love Boat. Floppys look great with a cute sundress and very cute lounging in a swimsuit by the pool. Gonna search out 1 more in color...maybe black or navy blue. Very classy--I recommend you take one with you.

Another one who loves to wear "straw" hats and brings them on cruises. Now that my friends and I are "older" we do tend to wear hats at summer afternoon events and on the beach far more than we did when we were younger. I saw some cute ones on our last cruise, too!

This is the favorite one I own...been around for years and years and a classic...you can find similar ones for less money, but this ones been throught it and held up great and worth the dear price over time.

My visor is a Helen Kaminski, expensive in comparison to others but well worth it. I've had it for 4 or 5 summers now and it shows no wear and tear at all. I wash the brim off carefully with a damp cloth.

I wish more stores carried hats in larger sizes, rather than the "one size fits most" ... some of us has extra large heads! Sometimes I even look in the men's dept, but many of those hats are also "osfm" and are too small, and they just aren't pretty enough!

I never thought of myself as having a ridiculously large head, but none of the department store hats ever fit! They never seem to carry anything other than one-size-fits-all or "medium". I finally decided to suck it up and try ordering a "md/lrg" from zappos (http://www.zappos.com/echo-design-paper-straw-braided-floppy-hat-white) and though it's still pretty darned snug, I can squeeze it over my ears.

At least it'll stay put in the breeze. ^_^

I love hats. I got an adorable pink hat in St. Thomas last year. As to sun protection on your head- I just saw some spray today- Fairy Tale- scalp protectant. It's good for bug repellant and for scalp/sun protection. The whole bug thing is not such a problem on cruises, but is here in coastal South Carolina. I wore it all day today and got no bugs flying around my head AND no sunburn on my scalp. I burn on my scalp easily as well.

Anyhow, back to the hat- I think hats are a great idea. I also love Marshalls and TJ Maxx for finding hats. Sometimes World Market has cute hats and scarves.

Thanks for all the responses.. I will definitely let you know how my shopping excursion goes when I set out to find one. I really like the one online but would like to see it in store and try it on. And since my bday is coming up, it's time for me to treat myself to a shopping trip. :D

PS - CruiseCritic has been working so slow for me lately. I logged in the other night and tried to respond to this thread and it took forever and obviously never went through.

  • 2 weeks later...

I am not normally a hat person, especially a straw hat one... but today at the zoo I saw a zebra inspired straw hat and could not resist it. I immediately thought of this thread and realized it would be perfect for my next cruise. For $15 I couldn't resist it either. :)

This hat is almost exactly like one I bought a month ago for our Mediterranean cruise in April. I wore it 3-4 times and loved it. The only problem I had was that since the brim is rather wide, part of it blocked my view a little bit in the front. However, after a while I just got used to tilting my head a certain way and just being extra careful when walking.:)

I also have a plain white hat with a slightly smaller brim, a bright fuchsia one for days when I feel very bold (or wear white), and a natural colored straw hat with a removable black band and removable pink/rose silk flower. Mostly I use my hats while cruising, sometimes for gardening as well.;)

Yes! Some, like my wife, women do.

I was wondering if the brim would block my "view"! :p Thx for mentioning it.. I will make sure I can see before making a purchase. I've been looking but haven't found one I love yet. :)

Where did you buy Fairy Tale scalp protectant? I had a cancer removed from my scalp, so I try to be extra careful.

Are you closer to Hilton Head or Charleston?
