Hotels in Singapore

yup i agree with iluvcrusing. lots to do and eat near the conrad. the Singapore flyer and observation wheel similar to the london eye is a few mins walk.

the gardens by the bay should be up by the time u arrive. i think.

Also, its physically closer to the new International Cruise Centre that will start operations in May 2012. The cruise centre is purpose built to handle large cruise ships. i read somewhere that the Voyager thats coming to Singapore in late may will be one of the first mega ships to dock there.

How much would a taxi cost (for 2) to get from Conrad Hotel to the new cruiseport..With luggage I'm thinking this would be the easiest option..what do you think ?

Hi Ashland

Yes that is the easiest option to date. At least until the underground is ready. A proposed underground train station is slated to service that area but its still not up yet. IMHO I would guess that the taxi fare will not cost more that SGD 20. In fact i think it would be less than SGD15. However peak periods and public holiday surcharges may apply depending on when you go but i think it should not be more than SGD20.

If traffic is clear, it should not take you more than 10 mins by cab.

If you let me know the name and address of the hotels you are considering, I can help you out with the distance to the MRT. The metro or underground is called the MRT here. If you use the term metro, locals may not know what you are referring to. In fact there is a famous departmental store called Metro, not to be confused with the MRT.

Fragrance Hotel - Riverside and Santa Grand Hotel Chinatown - Could you comment on either of these hotels (three star and about $110 USD)? We fly into Changi bdfore midnight Apr 30 pre-cruise (one night hotel) then board ship that leaves 6PM on 2 May on the Costa Victoria so have about day and half to visit.

Hi the Fragrance hotel is very close to the Clarke Quay train station. I think u will be sailing out of the harbour front cruise centre which is 3 stations away. Its near Central which is a shopping mall. Its also close to Boat Quay along the singapore river. Its a popular watering hole with lots of bars.

The one at chinatown is also very close to the china town train station. I will be 2 stops away from the harbour front cruise centre. It near some temples if u'd like to have a look around. Jus keep in mind dress code. Nice place to take pictures in the hub of chinatown lots of old conservation buildings.

If u guys don't mind moving around. I'd recomend taking a trip to harbour front station. The cruise centre is there but next to it is Vivo City a big shopping mall... Lots of food, convienent stores and shops for some last min shopping or stuff u forgot to bring.

Singapore is rather small and a short train trip can bring u to various places. You can google map the train stations and see what's nearby.

Please check to see if you are leaving singapore from the singapore cruise centre at harbour front or the International Cruise centre at Marina South. I think it should be the one at harbour front as the ICC is slated to start is may.

Let me know what you'd like to do or explore and ill try and get the info for u.

Gee Faz, thanks a lot for your quick and detailed response and offer to provide more information.

I think Ill go with the Fragrance Hotel or Santa Grand Lai Chun Yuen - been reading some bad reviews about the Santa Grand in Chinatown.

With our two large luggages plan to take a taxi to the Singapore Cruise Center (sounds like a short distance - maybe 10 minutes ride).

After I get to the port and check in I plan to do some sightseeing using the Hop On Hop Off bus for a half day then return to the ship, and next day until 4 PM. Been to Singapore about three times so have seen some of the major attractions. Want to take a leisurely ride to see many parts of the town. Want to take in the Marina Sands Hotel and the casino and walk the "Tube" in the evening. Where are these sites located (hope they are on the HOH bus line). Any other "must see" places that are near the bus line - see atch map - hope you can read the small words. Since I plan to use the ship as a hotel will need to get to the bus line and back so would like to have a convenient point to get on the bus - which would that be? If Im returning to the ship at night may want to catch a taxi.

Hi Golfnut

I am not too sure if you are referring to this for the Hop on Hop off tour.

http://www.ducktours.com.sg/sp.php

Map can be found here.

http://www.ducktours.com.sg/pdfs/map_hippo.pdf

The map shows the Marina Bay Sands is stop C2 for the yellow city route and H17 for the Red Heritage route.

The "tube" or the Helix bridge as its known here is just next to the Marina Bay sands. I think iluvcruising has posted a pic in the previous post.

Its a nice bridge at night. Also not to be missed is the "Wonder Full" performance that takes place infront of the Marina Bay Sands. It a nice light and water show happening at the bay front.

On the back drop of the Singapore skyline. Do take lots of pictures.

Im glad that you are coming back to sunny Singapore but there is so much to do for 1 and a half days. So take it easy and explore.

The one thing that you should not miss out is the great variety of food here in Singapore. So go wild. You can get food ranging from the really cheap at food courts to the real upscale at fancy restaurants. I have to agree with iluvcrusing when he mentioned that food is a primary factor. Or maybe its just a Singaporean trait. We take our food seriously so have a blast and make sure to try lots of different dishes and cuisine. For example the Suntec City Mall at the basement where the large fountain is. You will find a ring of restaurants from Japanese to Indian to Thai and Indonesian food.

However do judge for your self and not over eat too much. I do not wish for you to get indigestion.

FAZ, appreciate the help and wealth of information, exactly what I needed to give me ideas on where to stay, where to go, what to do and where to eat.

The company I bought tickets for HOH deals with the vendor City Sightseeing so I assume this map is the route they will take although the narrative description did not describe all the stops i.e. Marina Bay Sands and they did not provide a map on their website.

Am looking forward to a wonderful time in Singapore besides sightseeing and including good eats and just a great place to visit I am anticipating an overall wonderful cruise vacation beginning in Singapore. If I had more time I would want to try out a golf course - ha! :)

  • 2 weeks later...

We have stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel and have enjoyed our stay there. It is in a great position, very close to Bugis MTR and with lots of shops surrounding the hotel plus it is an easy walk to Raffles Hotel and Raffles Centre.

We always catch Taxis from the airport to whatever hotel we stay at in Singapore. They are cheap and very clean. If I were going to the port, then I would again catch a taxi.

The Salisbury YMCA is in Hong Kong.
And just in case anyone is also looking for a Hong Kong hotel (we are), the Salisbury is about to undergo a 12 mth renovation project. This was directly from the hotel reservation dept. Shame, we really enjoyed it last time.

Yes the location is very good. The hotel is connected directly to Bugis Junction, nearby MRT etc.

I stayed last month at the Marina Bay Sands. It is highly recommended and worth all the money. It is the best hotel/resort I have ever stayed at in my life and I will be sure to book it again next time I go to Singapore.

Sutho,

Was it expensive to stay at Marina Bay Sands?

Quick answer yes and no.

Rooms are not cheap but being central it saved transport costs into the city. Everything in walking distance. They start at about $400 Singapore/night. There are 2500 rooms so there are always upgrade chances if you arrive on a night flight and ask nicely you get upgraded.

Food was expensive so I just walked to SunTec City and either had a Sizzler meal or cheap McDonalds for breakfast.

Try Priceline to bid for rooms select and area and the number of stars put in a bid...we got the Conrad for $85US a night...very nice hotel.

Sue

I am trying to do as you did on Priceline, in order to get the Conrad.

But as it's a 41/2* hotel & that option is not available on Priceline.... any idea on where to click (4 or 5*)

Thanks
