Cupcake Decorating. $22. for 30 minute class. Really?

I wanted to take this class so I could learn how to make a cupcake into something fun, since I'm not a creative baker. However, when I signed up for it on the Freedom last year the class was cancelled because there were not enough people signed up for that particular time slot. So, I didn't get to experience it. I agree w/others, it's about making memories too and sometimes you just let yourself go when on vacation.

What is fun for some obviously is not fun for all. Putting a $$$ value on fun kinda takes the fun out of it. It is great to have a choice of what you do.

I took the class on oasis - had fun but I knew it was overpriced when I signed up for it.

I wouldn't do it again but enjoyed the one time!

You pay $99 and get to go around sweep & wash the decks, vacuum, empty ashtays, polish the brass, glass, fold towels, paint the rust spots, ect.

And some of you people would line up to do it....

It's all personal preference, like anything else on the cruise ship. I love arts and crafts, ways to be creative, but I never have time at home to do that kind of stuff. So on one of the sea days, I did the cupcake class. It was fun, allowed me to be a "kid" again and not be the business type I usually am. Way better than bingo to me! :D

My hubby and I have it booked for our March 4th cruise mainly because it sounded like fun and we wanted to do it, simple as that! We have been saving up for this for some time (our deposit went down January 2011) and we really want to go all out on this vacation.

 

That being said, if you don't think it is worth the money now I doubt anyone here is going to convince you to do it. Different people like doing different things on thier vacations and you may not think a cupcake class is worth it while I do but you may think (place activity here) is worth every penny while I don't. It's your vacation... do what you want and have an awesome time! :D

 

Another factor is time....at home, our weekends are usually chocked full of errands, kids' sport practices/games and generally doing all the stuff that we can't do during the week.

 

Oh and my wife didn't get an apron.

 

Agreed! My hubby and I work full-time and go to school full-time. We rarely have time to ourselves at home.

 

My opinion,,,I think the cupcake thing is a waste of space,,they should come up with something else,,,,we just walked by it every day:eek:..

 

Oh I disagree, I love cupcakes and I think my poor hubby's problem will be trying to keep me out of the place. ;)

I'm still not convinced. What I'm reading here is that for $44. you kept her out of the jewelry stores for an hour where $44. wouldn't make a dent in the sales slip. ;) No, I'm just kidding, I'm not a misogynist. Well, at least not to men.

 

Then don't do it. Personally, I would rather spend 1 minute and pay $2.50 for the final product than spend 30 minutes and $22 making them. Good thing for RCI though, these classes do fill up.

I can only give feedback with our experience on LOS. My 17y/o daughter did it because she loves to bake and decorate cakes. The class lasted 15 min max...in fact I went back to the cabin to get the camera and didn't make it back in time to get a picture of her in the class. Everything was pre-cut and ready to go for very quick assembly, so there was not a whole lot of opportunity for creativity. She made the hamburger and fries. The cupcake was delicious, but I would just go ahead and buy one and be done. She was highly disappointed. May run differently on different ships, though.

I haven't been on a ship that offered this yet. How many cupcakes do you get to keep? I'm sure this is a factor in the fee.

 

Yes, it seems a lot to me to pay.....but would I do it....maybe. I am inspired by TV food cooking shows and it would be fun to learn some tricks.

 

You make one fancy, themed cupcake that you get to keep/eat.

RCL is definitely jumping in on the cupcake craze that seems to be spreading through every American city. I love to bake and this may be something I would be interested in. I'm always interested in taking cooking classes when I'm at home. But, as several posters mentioned already, you don't always have time to do the things you do when you're at home, so you do it on vacation. Just like bingo, the casino, the bar bills, massages. I don't do that stuff at home, but when I'm on a cruise, I want to do whatever I want without worrying about spending a couple extra bucks, obviously within reason.

I think my first post implied that I am not going to participate so there was really no need to tell me not to do it if I don't want to. That's the same old remark we read all the time, similar to "If you don't like the thread then don't read it." There's no point to these boards if everyone just did that. I really wanted constructive reasons to justify this and some of you had excellent points. I love all the "Master Card" commercial responses of it being a priceless opportunity. If you're on vacation with the family and it's the rare chance to get the family together and share something like this then it really touches my heart. So if you happen to walk through the casino and see me shoving quarter after quarter into the slot machine, you are welcome to have a laugh. However, if I finally hit the jackpot, I'll be laughing too!

 

I was, however, disappointed to learn that it doesn't sound like this is really a legit decorating class. I didn't think you could acquire skills in 30 minutes and now that I've read some classes are done in 15 minutes and it's all prefabbed decorating pieces you just apply like Colorforms (do they still make them?). Of course, if you have a 5 year old child there I don't see how that kid could do much more than press some fondant on a cupcake. Maybe they could do something more advanced for the adults? Anyway, I'm still not convinced this is for me but I am considiering crashing one of the classes and eat the finished products.:D Thanks all for your responses.

It's NOT worth it!! 3 of us did it on the Allure in October. The cupcakes were cute but everything was pre-cut/ready made & all we did was assemble it. I expected the cupcakes to be baked but thought we'd decorate more than 1!! To make matters worse, we paid $22 each & RCL allowed people to stand in the shop & watch as we decorated! THAT was very annoying having several people get the class for free!!!:(

Some of my adult children did this class onboard the LOS..Something they would never do at home..They had lot's of fun & laughs..to us their fun was "priceless"..Also the fee you pay includes Cupcake Cupboard white chef type aprons to take home with you..Isn't that what vacations are supposed to be..fun memories..at least for us they are :D

ok, have to say, from the pictures I have seen of people in the class making the hamburger it looked like a lot of fun.....but for $22 I will most likely skip it as I can get a couple of foofoo drinks or pictures for the same price. Yes it is a money maker for rccl, but it is also an activity that obviously strikes many peoples fancy......

For the 1st bolded comment: I guess I misunderstood what you were asking. It looks like you were asking for us to tell you if it would/wouldn't be worth it. I don't think any of us were trying to tell you what to or what not to do. Or at least I wasn't.

 

For the 2nd bolded comment: I would be both laughing and doing a happy dance if I won big in the casino... and depending on the payout booking another cruise! :D

I did it on the Liberty last week. Was alot of fun. Not something I would do at home which is what cruising is about; doing something different. :cool:
