Day hotel for Tahiti

We are booked on Marina for Tahitian Breeze, leaving Papeete at 11:00 p.m. on January 16, 2013. We end our cruise there at 8:00 a.m. on January 27. As we look at airline schedules, it appears that flights from the US get to Tahiti early in the morning and leave late at night. Are any accommodations made for all the passengers who are in this situation -- such as allowing us the use of a hotel facility or something to that effect? Or, are we just on our own to spend the 12+ hours waiting at the airport?

You're on your own, but the good news is that virtually all of the hotels in Tahiti have Day Rooms available.

Expect to pay from one to two hundred dollars, depending on the luxe of your surroundings, and get ready to spend another day in paradise!

We rented a car and explored Tahiti and Tahiti Iti for the day we had in Tahiti. It was fun and very easy as there is basically one road and no traffic. We dropped the car at the airport and then went in to await our flight. We went to the Gauguin museum, had lunch at a local restuarant, explored beaches etc. You are in for a wonderful treat on this cruise!!

You spent a whole day in Tahiti without once going into the Water?

I would consider that torture....

Hi, What did you end up doing to kill time after your cruise? We are on the Paul Gauguin in a couple months, and are trying to decide what to do after the cruise ends, before our late flight out of Papeete.

Thanks!

Debbie

We enjoyed our day at the Meridien booked through Oceania. Price included transfers. We walked to the museum after lunch. Interesting air conditioned! Museum with a special exhibit on Captain Cook (2013). Need local currency for the museum. Get it beforehand or exchange it at the hotel.

When we took the Paul Gauguin(before they were independant) they included a day stay at a Papeete hotel, but it was only a convention room to store your carry-ons, use of hotel facilities and buffett lunch, drinks. It worked out well, tho. If they no longer do that, hotels in Papeete do offer this, and the ships also offer a private hotel room, with hotel amenities and airport transfers. We used this last service at the Raddison($140) in Jan, 2013 after our Marina cruise. It was perfect for our last day. Have fun whatever you decide!

I believe that the PG still provides a dayroom after the cruise for passengers who do their flight program. You could ask over on the Paul Gauguin board here at CC. If it's the same as before, they bus you to the hotel, or on an optional bus tour which will include that Museum of Tahiti and the Islands (good if you're into history or anthropology), check into a real room for about 3 hours before you have to check out and prepare to bus you back to the airport.

I would advise taking a cab to the airport actually.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all of your responses. We booked our own airfare, so we aren't part of PG's flight program.

I'll go check out the Paul Gauguin board.

Thanks!

Debbie

We have stayed at the Sheraton and the intercontinental, both very nice, but IC is nicer. Having said that, I would not do a day room at either. Rent a car, drive around the island, have a nice dinner. Remember you will have to check in at least 2 hrs prior to your flight, and the check in lines are crazy in Tahiti.

It had to be quite some time ago.

Quantas does not fly that route any more (for some time now).

If you look at the Matrix Search the flight name 'Quantas' does in fact appear as a flight option but written in fine print underneath is 'operated by AirTahiti'
