Thomson Destiny's gone!?!?!

Recommended Posts

According to the published photos Majesty's casino does not have a roulette table. The images appear to show a craps table.

They can't be serious!

OK, I have to stop all this upsetting me. after all, I am not aboard Majesty until next winter and they will have sorted it by then.

I must get my packing list sorted for my upcoming Ventura cruise :D:D:D

I love a game of roulette now and again. Surely they must be putting one in? Be a pity if not as usually in the casino this is always the busiest area.

Definitely Majesty being sold on Thomson's site this morning - at least from June onwards. Will be interesting to see how this all unravels!!

May be popular - but then again there are apparently changes (not least of all to the entertainment) which could be a real negative to some. Also perhaps with previous experiences with both Celebration and Dream when they first came into service, people may be reluctant to 'go for it' until they see how the early reviews go! Certainly with a new crew trying to establish procedures and routines it could be a bit chaotic at the beginning. Let's hope they do lots of practice and a dry run before the first lot of paying passengers!

I totally agree with you, the Majesty looks OK, and we like open dining, but the apparent changes to the entertainment are a real negative to us - we love the West End type shows, never miss one even if we've seen it before like Africa.

Had finally decided to book on the Destiny for two weeks in September - not my first choice in the fleet but great itinerary -only to log on to Thomson and find out about the change. This will certainly make us think again. So maybe it's back to the Celebration for the Aegean this year and wait and see what happens with the Majesty.

Now i have found a photo showing a roulette tabel which would be a more logical choice for a european based ship.

We were also surprised to receive the email notifying us of the change of ship. We are booked on the Adriatic Explorer for 1st May!

In itself, the change isn't a deal breaker as we booked for the itinerary rather than the ship with a standard outside cabin which may turn out to be a bit better than on the Destiny. However I can understand the fears being expressed by other posters. Our last 'cruise' was a transatlantic on Queen Mary 2 which we booked for the experience and had Cunard substituted something else then we would have been miffed indeed!

As far as the entertainment is concerned, the change is a bit disappointing. We have twice sailed on Celebration in the past. The first time the show routines were excellent, the second time I would have classed them as quite good. Both were better that what was on offer with Cunard who I think tried a bit too hard to be highbrow. Listening to a violinist for over two hours becomes a bit tedious no matter how good he is. It is clear from the posts on this forum that there are differing views on the value of the Thomson entertainment but that a lot of people clearly value and expect it.

So whether it is a minor or a major change rather depends on what you are expecting to get from the cruise and somebody who has booked a luxury cabin and who values the standard entertainment is entitled to feel short changed and expect the option of a refund or rebooking on another vessel.

My particular concern is that a proportion of the Destiny crew are apparently being transferred to the Majesty on the 4th May which doesn't exactly give much time for them to become familiar with the new ship, its layout and its equipment etc. No doubt Thomson are well aware of this and hopefully have a cunning plan, especially as the Majesty is supposed to be laid up at Piraeus at the moment.(I hope they are testing all the toilets!) The thought of being something ofa guinea pig on the first Majesty cruise does fill me with some trepidation and Thomson are going to have to work very hard indeed if they want good reviews for the Majesty because if they don't get them it's going to cost them a lot of money.

Anyway, let's hope for the best.

I am realy worried I have booked a 14 night cruise starting 6th July on the Destiny ( no info received about a change of ship) there are 9 of us going some cruising for the first time. Will this be positve or an negitive ! change it looks bad from the present posts that the high entertainment standards on thomsons cruises may suffer

On the plus side - the itinerary is stunning so i'm sure you will really enjoy it. By July, the systems and crew will have settled in so I see no reason why it shouldn't be as good an experience as any other Thomson cruise. The Destiny crew are great and if as reported, many are transferring to Majesty, this will provide some continuity and will be good for the general atmosphere on board and customer relations.

The entertainment is a different matter. There is absolutely no reason to suppose it won't be good though or that the standards will drop - it will just be different! The Concerto shows which Thomson have been including in their usual show programme (commonly one per week) are excellent and provided a change from the 'show' format. But instead of just one show of this type in a week's cruise it appears that that is to be the main provision on Majesty whilst the 'production' style shows have gone. This may suit some people - the main issue is for those who particuarly liked the shows and booked on Destiny expecting the shows to be part of the Thomson experience and now find it has changed.

You may find the new format to your taste - and I'm sure it will be very good but it does represent a contraction of the type and variety of entertainment on offer in terms of what's on offer inthe showlounge.

Your new cruiser friends, not having experienced the shows previously, probably won't have an issue - they're not comparing the new with the old. I hope you have a great cruise - you will get some good entertainment I'm sure - just not exactly what you might have been expecting.

As curiosity was getting the better of me I have just phoned Thomson/Cruise Deals and was told that letters are going out to passengers in date order of their cruise and at the moment the May/June cruises are taking precedent. As we are not sailing until October we will hear about our booking in the near future.

Disappointed about the entertainment change but looking forward to going on the Majesty irrespective of cabin size.

For a first time cruiser, would someone please explain what is involved in a Thomson Concerto Show. Thanks.

The Concerto shows are basically four, sometimes five of the singers from the showteam singing a selection of songs - often with a theme so you do get different genres of music if you are on for two weeks as the two Concerto shows are different. They are very good - close harmony as the Thomson press release indicates.

But what it's not is a show with costumes, staging, choreography and dancers - which you usually get for five nights a week (one other night is Concerto and one a visiting comedian - usually).

The 'shows' may be considered by some to be the same sort of thing but there is actually quite a variety. I'm not keen on what I think of as 'twee' musicals (like South Pacific, Oliver, Half a Sixpence etc) I actually really dislike that kind of thing - but that's just personal preferences. But there is virtually none of that kind of thing (although there has been the odd show with a more old fashioned feel - to my tastes - but not often and not more recently).

Some highlights we have seen in our latest trips have been shows based on The Rocky Horror Show, excerpts from War of the Worlds, an extremely clever and funny version of We Are the Champions featuring Queen music but with a story-line based on Rooney and Beckham and Wags (highly entertaining imo), excerpts from musicals such as Miss Saigon, Les Mis, Cabaret (great, raunchy verson of Lady Marmalade!), Africa - a big favourite, based on Lion King and with some fab costumes and some hypnotic drum rhythms and dancing, Motown, an edgy Skoolz Out show (Alice Cooper) as well as the well known Mediterranean Nights show with a rousing version of Figaro (which received a standing ovation for the vocal acrobatics) and the 7 minute Can-Can which is always well received - just from an admiration point of view for the energy of the dancers if nothing else!

Perhaps not everyone's cup of tea but entertaining and varied for those who do like the shows. The concern about the Concerto Shows is that they are basically more of a cabaret than a show - and we've always had cabarets given by individuals from the show team as late night shows AS WELL AS the shows so there is a sense of disappointment about the change.

But we may well be proved wrong - it may be brilliant. I would feel very confident that the standard will be very good though - just not what regulars have come to expect.

Hope that explains something of the reasons for the entertainment being such a topic of debate at the moment.

Thank you Kruzseeker for that explanation. I have not cruised before so cannot compare with past shows but was looking forward to the nightly entertainment. If it's not to our taste we shall be looking for a quiet bar and taking full advantage of our AI drinks package!! ;)

Well I had my cofirmation of a new booking today so went to the travel agents to re book a cabin . I was offered deck 3 or 4 neither to my liking or the original criteria that I had booked on the Destiny, deck 3 is the bottom i didnt want this and deck 4 is below the restaurants and other public spaces again not my choice . I will be writing another letter of complaint to Thomson and continue to do so until they offer some form of compensation . To me the right cabin in the right position is very important if I cant sleep It will ruin my holiday .

I think deck 4 cabins forward of midships will be quiet as they are below the atrium/reception and the shops so you might want to consider one of those.

btw when are you cruising? I am trying to guage when i might get a response from Thomson for my next February cruise.

My problem is i booked a deck 3 midships inside, nice and quiet. Then I find that Majesty might well have single cabins. OK, but where are they on the deck plans available?

Thomson have announced the new ship on their website. I think that in most respects it is a better ship than the destiny but with no evening shows I am not interested in going on the cruise that I have already booked. If you would like to tell Thomson how you feel their comment page is here:

Why do you feel the need to post this on 4 separate threads?

sooooo angry just got back from travel agents they knew nothing of the changes until i told them ! When they rang Thompson it seems a different ship is classed as a minor change so we cant have a refund , no compensation and cannot re book a cabin should we want to until April 2nd . I will fight this as the holiday is for my 40th birthday and It has been spoilt

We are a party of 12 and booked a cruise on the Destiny for the 18th May 2012 leaving from Corfu. We pre booked our cabins last May and have just been Informed by our TA (who have been very good) over the weekend that Thomsons have transferred us on to the Majesty. Thomsons have said they would give us equivalent cabins but we booked outside cabins with clear view. Thomsons offered us cabins with a restricted view and next to the lifts. After several telephone calls from our TA to Thomsons we have managed to get away from the lifts but still with restricted view.No compensation has been offered and if we cancelled we would lose 30%. We have sailed on the Destiny previously and although the cabins were tired we could not complain about the entertainment. I am not so sure about this ship.I have just joined this forum and as a group we are upset. We are certainly going to complain to Thomsons.

Dont let it spoil your birthday though.
