Pea Soup in Alaska.....

Yes Sail, I saw some empty bowls along with other dishes outside a cabin door last night.

Sometimes, on the days that you visit the Glaciers, they serve Dutch Pea Soup in the MDR during dinner.

 

 

Fingers crossed. That would be great.

Dutch Pea Soup and Alaska Salmon..... that's my idea of a wonderful dinner. :)

I posted the menus for our 14 day Alaskan cruise from last summer and was just relooking at them.

We had both Tray Arm and Hubbard Glacier -- Dutch Pea Soup was never offered on either of those nights.

Must be up to the chef if they want to serve it again for dinner.

I don't know what it is but you seem to miss out on so many things.

Yes, for most...... that would be perfect.

 

I'm a red wine type. Most any will do..... from a bottle, from a box but please make it red. :D

When Dutch Pea Soup used to be offered on all cruises -- it was on the dinner menu even in Alaska.

But when HAL dropped it from the main menus -- most ships doing Alaskan cruises also dropped it for dinner.

That's not bad luck -- that is just the way HAL does things.

That's why we know to read the daily program and look for the time and place that the soup will be served.

We actually enjoyed having it in the Crow's Nest last year instead of out on the deck.

Many years ago we did a tour of the Alaskan Brewing Company -- I had never had beer before. I have to admit that I enjoyed tasting several of their beers.

But I discovered one thing -- I can not tolerate the yeast in the beer.

I've never seen Pea Soup on a HAL dinner menu since they dropped Dutch Night. It doesn't sound from these posts like most of the ships serve it in the MDR on AK cruises either, just during the day when glacier cruising. I think only one poster mentioned it being served in the MDR.

What maked Dutch Pea Soup - Dutch?

 

I make my own, but I have never heard of a Dutch variation.

 

(Not that I really need to know because I have already heard that the one HAL makes is not Vegeterian.)

 

HAL's Dutch Pea Soup has ham in it.

When HAL used to do Dutch Night in the dining room -- it was always on the menu. Those days are long gone.

Here it is. It is fairly long.

Dutch pea soup and the recipe comes form the Holland America Cruise Line Cookbook: A Taste of Excellence

 

(yield 12 servings)

 

1 pound green split peas (do not soak)

 

1 gallon water, plus extra as needed

 

1/2 pound pork product–ham steak or ham hock

 

1/2 pound bacon, diced (I use the full pound! Yummmmm…bacon)

 

1 large onion, diced

 

1 large carrot, peeled and diced

 

1 leek, white and light green parts, well washed and diced

 

1 celery root, peeled and diced

 

1 potato, peeled (if desired) and diced

 

1/2 pound of smoked pork sausage

 

leaves and inner sprigs only from one bunch of celery, coarsely chopped

 

Salt, Pepper

 

Crusty Bread as an accompaniment

Rinse split peas under running water.

 

In a soup pot brown bacon, then add peas, 2 quarts of water, ham hock or steak and bring to a boil. Skim off an scum–yum scum. Remove ham hock, and strain peas and bacon from water. Rinse peas with water. Put ham hock, peas, and bacon back into the pot and add 2 quarts of water and bring to a simmer over medium heat.

 

After peas and meat reach a gentle simmer, add onion, carrot, leek, celeriac, and potato to the pot and continue to simmer. After 1 1/2 hours add whole smoked sausage and celery leaves and sprigs. When peas are soft and broken (about 2 hours of cooking time) take meat out of the pot with tongs and remove meat from bone. Cut meat into small pieces and return to pot. Season soup with salt and pepper and remove from heat. The soup will be fairly liquid, it will thicken with time. Be sure to slice the pork sausage before serving.

 

To serve, ladle soup into bowls and serve with bread.
