Maxi-Dress Where do you wear them?

Recommended Posts

I doubt you'll have to pay $70 for it. Today is buy one get 75% off. So you could get two dresses for under $90. On the 22nd they sent me an email that everything was 50% off. I see deals like this all of the time with them.

Yes, I saw that buy one get 75% off after I posted, and I get emails from NY&Co all the time - don't think I've ever paid full price for anything there! A lot of their things are too big on me, sometimes I can wear their extra smalls and sometimes not. They have a lot of cute things right now!

I bought a black and white one and wore it on my recent cruise.

Here is a photo, although it is not real clear.....I felt very pretty in

it:) and as for feeling like the 60s? I don't think so:rolleyes: I will try to

find the photo I originally posted.

I found the picture I had posted on the dress thread..........

They certainly do NOT look silly on women of a certain age. I'm 5'4" and 118 pounds and maxi dresses are PERFECT in hot-weather climates. I have a closet full of them and have worn them on cruises, visiting my dad in Florida, around town on errand day, and out to dinner with my husband. I have had a number of women around my age (I'm 54) stop me and compliment me on my maxis.

Ladies, don't be shy and wear these wonderful summer dresses.

By the way, I was married just over a year ago and wore mermaid-style wedding gown. We were married in Las Vegas and I had to walk through the casino to get to the chapel. Women called to me telling me how great I looked in that dress. It's not how old you are but how you carry yourselves, ladies. Own it! :)

I am so glad to read this - I've seen your photos and you have a fabulous figure and always look great! I'm another one in the "just because I'm over 50 doesn't mean I have to stop wearing attractive clothes" camp. As long as what you are wearing doesn't scream "trying too hard to look young", I say if you can still wear it well then you should wear it!

I love dresses - short or maxi or long (tank style). It's pretty much all I wear in the summer because it's so hot and humid here. I wear them to work (I work in research; it's completely appropriate - I'm not wearing the halter tops or tube top versions) I wear a short dress if I've shaved and a long dress if I haven't:p I just need to make sure I get a version with straps wide enough (and not too low cut) so I can wear an appropriate bra. I wear with wedges, espadrilles or flat sandals. Depends on the dress.

I have one that's a nicer version - different fabric - that I wore on a cruise last year and to an outdoor wedding last summer. No, it's not "formal" but it's suitable for formal night on a cruise:)

I have one and I love it. Its dark blue cotton with gold and blue beading at the top and straps and super comfortable. I bought it (truthfully) for our cruise but ended up wearing it got a Sunday downtown brunch with friends. I'm short and small but luckily the dress fit perfectly. I'll buy more if they fit right since I'm not a fan of getting things hemmed (if it doesnt fit, it doesnt fit). I say go for it and buy one! There are def 60s looking ones but so many more that arent. I'll probably wear mine for a dinner or sea day.

So where do you guys buy your dresses? I want one or 2 for my summer cruise.

We have a really really good TJMAXX here and I found mine there. They have a ton and seem to be getting them in all the time. I have seen them at other stores (American Eagle, Dillards, etc.) but I'm waiting for summer/spring sales to start so I can snag them!!

I got my black and white one at SOMA'S....but all the department

stores sell them. If you have a Beall's near you...they usually have

a really nice selection:)

I don't own a maxi dress... Yet. Your comment about the vintage Pucci reminded me of one I have had my eye on for a week or so at NY&Co. I haven't decided on it yet, mostly because I'm afraid I'll be disappointed in the quality, but it IS cute: http://www.nyandcompany.com/nyco/prod/Apparel/Dress-Boutique/Mod-Print-Knit-Maxi-Dress

I haven't seen any that would be appropriate for the office, but I think if I had a cute one I would wear it just about anywhere else I go, church, restaurants, shopping, even walking the dogs.

That is gorgeous!!!

I could not agree with you more. I'm in your age bracket, hit the gym every day and I agree that they look terrific. We just got back from a cruise and I wore 2 very fitted size 6's and got a number of compliments.

I have gotten several from an online site called Zulily, several under $20...I love this site, and find lots of good deals. The sellers change daily.

And I happen to be a petite woman also, 61 years young, and love to wear them with my wedges, dangle earrings, and bangle bracelets. But, then again, I like dresses, short, long, makes no difference to me.

Good Day Ladies !

I am so happy I just happened to see this discussion :-)

We are going on a cruise out of Galvaston on the Magic, the end of July, it is going to be soooooo Hot !

I live in AZ and I can tell you when you wear a Maxi and you can catch a Breeze under your dress it just makes your Day :-) Yipee !

I am 65 and a Plus size and they are perfect for me! I have several shrugs in different colors that are an open weave to cover my jiggily arms :-(

I also see young teen girls wearing them to dinner too, so I think they are perfect for all ages and sizes and I HOPE they don't go out of style anytime soon :-)

I have gotten mine at Macy's, and JC Pennys my only complaint is I would like to find at least one made from cotton for around the pool !

I never swim but I do love to hangout and sit with friends. A Cotton Maxi would be so useful ! I may look at Walmart or Target :-)

I have seen ladies wear Maxi's for Formal nights too! None of mine are Fancy enough but they are perfect for Dinner's on Non formal nights with cute sandals etc.

Thanks for starting this thread ......Ladies Unite ! If we all wear Maxie's on the cruises we will be the Trend Setters :-)

I just bought a really cute maxi dress from JCPenny that was cotton and kind of a halter style. Very comfortable and super cute for summer. Right now Payless is having BOGO 50% off for cute sandals. They would be perfect to wear with your maxi dress.

I did actually buy one at Walfart last year that was cute and cheap..never again..it faded the first time it went in the wash and I even used cold water and vinegar (I do that with all clothes to preserve the color) and I hung it on the line to dry.

I'm glad I only spent $15 on it! Lesson learned, always go for something quality made..I don't think I've even bought a tshirt from Walfart that didn't either fall apart or fade within a couple washings. And I never even use a dryer and use only better detergent for my clothes!

Hi Gathina,

I love your name for Wal-mart... so perfect !

I agree the quality of the things at Wal-mart is less than Good :-(

I think If I could find something I could use there, I would just Know It was not going to last !

It seems that most Maxi's tend to be made from Rayon/Spandex etc.?

I will Try Ross too sometime's it is just luck to find exactly what you are looking for there!

Ahhh the Thrill of the Hunt !!

Due to a broken elbow, for the last 5 weeks maxi dresses are the only clothing I have been able to wear. Literally! I cant pull up pants or put a bra on so the maxi dresses have been a lifesaver. The ones I have are lined in the bust so no bra is no issue and I can manuver them around my left elbow then slip them over my head. I had a couple I had bought for our upcoming West Carib cruise, but I did have to pick up a few more. I am 32, very curvy in the hips, not so curvy in the bust and they fit good and everyone says they look nice on me. I have even gotten a compliment on them from my BROTHER, lol. So don't worry about your age or height/size or where/when to wear them. Maxis look good on EVERONE in my opinion and can be appropriate for many more things than most people realize.

Have never seen Spandex..I think they'd be very hot and clingy. I have seen some a JC Penney's before...not that their quality is any greater, but anything is better than Walfart.

5% spandex blended with other fabrics can give just the right amount of stretch to add figure flattering closeness and comfort - not cling;) My favorite ankle pants from Talbots are 95% cotton and 5% spandex.....(as are the khakis from JCP I love so much)

@ Hoyaheel & Gathina !

I just got a couple of Maxi's I ordered from Macy's online, they both contain Spandex and I agree Hoyaheel because I really like the way they gently hug my body but Not Cling ! As I have said I am Plus size and when I wear something with a lot of material it does tend to make me look bigger. It is better for me to wear closer fitting clothes never tight :-)

These are a little more dressy than the others I have ! Honestly, I think that a Maxi in a solid color could easily be used for one of some Formal nights on a Cruise ! IMHO It seems the Patterns in tha Maxi's harken backed to the 60's using all the Reto prints with paisleys, tie dyes, etc.

I have also learned if I am looking for a little sleeve to just search under Peasant Dress :-) Bingo ! That is a Maxi with a sleeve and often with elastic in the neckline which you can wear off the shoulder ....My shoulders are not plus size LOL

@Bug&Sprouts ~ If you get compliments from your brother you KNOW you look Good :-) I say we need to all do our part in buying plenty of Maxi dresses so they will stay in style !

I'm still in search of a less dressy one for casual wear around the pool ! If ya all find any post and let me know ! I did see a couple on line at Kmart .... I think I will head there tomorrow :-)
