TM Posted June 2, 2012 #2 Share Posted June 2, 2012 The vast majority of passengers will get dressed up in "formal" attire and eat in the main dining rooms.

caribill Posted June 2, 2012 #4 Share Posted June 2, 2012 Thanks for that.do they do anything special on formal night or is it just normal dining? The formal nights have what many people consider to be the best menus on the cruise. On the first formal night there will be in the atrium (around 7:30 PM - 8:15 PM) the Captain's Welcome Party with the Champagne** waterfall. ** Truth in advertising. Not really Champagne. It is a "sparkling wine" waterfall.

1 HappyCruiser Posted June 2, 2012 #6 Share Posted June 2, 2012 Aside from the better menu in the DR & the champagne waterfall the only other thing is, they usually schedule a production show on that night which most people consider better entertainment than the guest entertainers and that night is also designated a non smoking night in the casino (at least till around midnight or so). DiRon Posted June 2, 2012 #7 Share Posted June 2, 2012 Having done so many cruises we are a little jaded I suppose with regard to formal nights - so we prefer to eat in the alternative restaurants on formal night or even the buffet. We have enough of the formal portraits and those nights just seem a little more chaotic to us than other nights, so we tend to "lay low" on those evenings. Another alternataive is to order the ultimate balcony dinner which includes lobster and steak.
Rare oskidunker Posted June 2, 2012 #8 Share Posted June 2, 2012 I gave up on the lobster and was glad I did.
Rare Cruise Junky Posted June 2, 2012 #9 Share Posted June 2, 2012 We're so over formal nights. We'll either be on our deck with room service and a great bottle of wine or in one of the Specialty Restaurants.
paul929207 Posted June 2, 2012 #10 Share Posted June 2, 2012 We still enjoy the formal nights. It is rare that we get dress up, so I bring my tux on each cruise. I find that they have the best menus on formal nights.

The best thing on the menu is the Short Ribs served on the last formal night especially when your waiter hand picks the ones with little or no fat.. :)
crooooze Posted June 2, 2012 #13 Share Posted June 2, 2012 And of course formal night means the big majestic winding stair case in the atrium is usually closed and there are photo back drop screens all over the place for formal portraits. You can expect your table mates to arrive to the dining room a few mins late because they were caught in a long line to get a picture taken. All part of the fun! In recent years one can usually find the Beef Wellington being served in the buffet as well as the main dining rooms.
