Just off F.O.S. 8/19- New menu review

Recommended Posts

We just got off the Freedom Of the Seas. We had nine in our party, seven adults and two children. We are all foodies. I eat out 4-5 days a week in some of the finest restauans Los Angeles and Las Vegas has to offer.

I have got ripped in other posts comparing Royal Caribbean food to a cafeteria. But after eating there for a weeek they are similar.

I was real excited to hear about the new menu. But after getting off the ship we all agreed they need allot of work.

Most every meal was served cold. I hate cold soup and cold main dishes.

Some of the meals were uneatable. The T-Bone veal chop was so bad , I wouldn't serve it to my dog.

I have been on other ships and they managed to serve hot food, Royal Caribbean can't. If the main dining room is too big maybe they should have smaller dining rooms.

I spent allot of money for a owner's suite , 2 junior suites and a inside room and besides the meal in Chops the main dining room was terrible.

Good service but bad food. The waiter was apologizing every night.

I watched the table next to me return 9 dishes one night and they only had 3 people at the table.

If I din't have two small children I would have ate at Chops or Portofinos every night.

THE MAGIC DIDN'T WORK...Magic Man...if the food was that bad you should have performed the trick and made it disappear...as far as the ...veal chop that you wouldn't have given to your dog...my dog would have worked on that bad boy all morning...noon and night...if you stayed in the main dinning room for the whole week shame on you Magic Man...Portofino's was there to be had...oh well i think it might be safe in saying that we won't be seeing you on any RCCL ship soon or maybe not even on this board...ruff...did i see you on the beverly hills nanney show a couple of weeks ago...

Yes you will, I won a free cruise on the Oasis and a seat in the Royal Poker Tour.

I sail with R.C. for my grandchildren.

I didn't want to leave them for two meals, that's why we didn't eat at Portofinos.

PS---My dog eats steaks at least once a week.

Uneatable, sure you don't mean inedible. Can't believe you eat in the finest restaurants 4-5 nights a week and that's how you describe food.

Exactly my thoughts as well!

I have had problems with the food being served at the wrong temps. That alone would make the meal bad. When the meals come out hot they are usually OK not great but at least OK. I have no idea why this seems to happen for the whole cruise and not just one or two nights. I would agree that the veal chop is not very good. I think it used to be an entree in Chops - it was so fatty. I have not ordered it again on any Royal ship.

Lets hope it gets fixed before your cruise and mine also in Dec on the Oasis.

what kind of a dog are talking about...i would think that a steak would be a little too rich on the puppy's stomach...why won't you take the grandkids into chops and portofino's but you will take them into the main dionnign room...i'm sure they are well behaved...enjoy your nrxt trip maybe some day...the food will meet your expectations...4 to 5 night a week...that's impressive...being in the owners suite i'm sure you could have scored a couple of free passes to chops or portofino's...NOW THOSE WOULD HAVE BEEN DYNO MEALS MAGIC MAN...YOUR A POKER PLAYER...i think your trying to bluff us all...the meals were out of this world...i have to run to the store and get my 7 1/2 lb yorkie ****zu a porterhouse...sorry to cut this short...thanks for letting me yank on your chain...how were the desserts...

imagine how bad it is on Oasis or Allure! This is why I won't sail on anything larger than the Radiance class. Maybe they want to serve bad food so you do cough up more money to eat in the specialty restaurants!

I don't have to imagine as I have been on the Oasis. The food I had was always served at proper temperature. Hot foods were served hot, cold foods were served cold.

Its subjective and I hate that a big time cruiser such as yourself would cheat themselves out of a Freedom class ship experience over pre conceived notions about the food.

I was on Radiance with you last year :) and I was on Freedom this year. The MDR food on Freedom was wonderful I thought and served at temps it should be. At least everything I ordered was anyway. In fact it was much better than our experience on Radiance even though Radiance MDR food wasnt bad by any means.

Anyone use to eating in the finest places Los Angeles and Los Vegas has to offer will NEVER be happy with mass market cruiseline food. These kinda "dog food" threads absolutely crack me up

Is this REALLY a review or a smear campaign?

:confused::confused: Interesting words.

Wow, I'll bet they are a barrel of monkeys to live with.

My review of the old menu -

It was good. I don't eat at finer restaurants often but I do have taste buds.

Even if there was something I didn't like, it's not like there is a shortage of food choices on a cruise ship.

I was on the same cruise and it is amazing how food is so subjective. We were at the second seating in Isaac's dining room and thought the food was wonderful. I especially liked the veal t-bone! Lean and perfectly cooked. I wouldn't feed it to my dog (if I had one) because a dog shouldn't eat that well! Seriously, I thought the food in the MDR was excellent. My wife loved the cold soups although they are not my thing. Again, this just shows how food can be so subjective. I will also say that the four of us at my table are not picky eaters (although we do appreciate and enjoy good food at good restaurants).

"Reviews" (and I'm being charitable to refer to it as that) like this always leave me perplexed. The OP puts such effort into selling the importance of their opinions but so little effort into the actual heart of the critique itself.

The cafeteria and dog food comparisons are childish and amateurish.

In this case we have someone who seems desperate to convince everyone that because they have the money to spend on upper-level accommodations aboard and they routinely eat at "the best" restaurants that we should take their opinions as the be all and end all.

Perhaps if fewer column inches were devoted to selling their opinions of themselves, and more were used to actually offer balanced observations and opinions of the food, it might be easier to take them seriously.

Instead this just feels like someone trying to stroke their own ego and a poorly expressed opinion of the dining experience is a way for them to do so.

I agree, could imagine setting at his table. What fun.

Appreciate your honest opinion. I knew the pom poms would be coming out on this one, as they try to hit you with the pom poms they are holding brass nucks, ouch

Ya I'm thinking if you eat fine dining 4-5 times a week, feed your dog steak, book an owners suite along with other suites. Money is no object to magicman and he should have been in chops and portofino. No excuse for the complaining if he's truly a baller like he boasts he is. Blah. He must be a carnival executive trashing rccl

Stop the hate, I miss spelled a word.

I might not be a great speller, but I know good food.

I don't think it the place to take a 4 and 6 years old to Chops or Portofino,

I had a great cruise except the food in the MDR.

The question is, are you as good a poker player as you are a speller? :D

Of all my Royal Caribbean cruises, the worst food and slowest service was on the Freedom, both times we sailed that ship. I have also sailed Rhapsody, Jewel, Navigator, Vision, Serenade, Voyager, Grandeur, Liberty, Oasis, Allure, many of them more than once and several 3 or 4 times. We sailed Freedom twice, the last time was summer 2011.

Another complaint for both times we sailed Freedom was the slow, sometimes non existent bar service in the MDR and the Casino. It was really weird. And I am not a Royal basher. I love Royal and have several upcoming cruises booked. We have sailed enough to be well into the D+ status.

So to all of you posters, instead of bashing the messenger maybe you should listen to what he is saying. I mean even Royal Caribbean knows it's food is under par or they wouldn't be trying out these new menus.

But the truth is the truth. Some ships have better food than others and better service. I was hoping with the supposed new food on the Freedom the reviews would be great. But they really haven't been. Too bad in my opinion.

So you can attack the messenger, but the truth will come out.

I often read reviews of cruises and specifically about food and am always on the lookout for 1 of 2 things. People who say the food was fantastic, 5 out of 5, wouldn't change a thing and conversely, those who can't seem to find anything right. I typically ignore both.

Look, I gave up on Carnival a couple years ago for several reasons but foremost was the food. Between the inability to get a good steak in the MDR to seeing Mac and cheese, meatloaf and fried chicken (comfort food as they call it - I call it meeting low expectations) they drove me away but even I have to admit that they do some good things in the MDR. When someone tells me that the food was "uneatable" all week then I pretty much sum that up to nonsense.
