LIVE(or at least my best attempt) from the Oasis Of The Seas, sailing October 13th

Recommended Posts

Fair point but it still seems a little draconian.

Rules are rules. Any cruise line has the right to boot a passenger or passengers for violation of company policy. Remember they threatened employees. If I was the Captain I would have done the same thing and had them removed at the next port of call

I've booked my first cruise on OoS this February. I have to admit the idea of formal wear in a dining rooms of hundreds (thousands?) seems silly and anachronistic. I plan to eat at the chefs table and a couple other of the upscale choices so will wear a suit but I doubt I will at the giant dining room.

Still many people do take formal nights very seriously. I don't wear a tux but I do wear a suit and on non formal nights I will wear a nice button up shirt and khakis. Sorry about casual wear shouldn't be allowed in the MDR in my opinion and the opinion of most cruisers

Chris, just getting a chance to catch up on this thread. I love Live reviews and have to tell you that this one is the best I've ever read! So much detail and so many amazing pictures. I will definitely be looking forward to your future reviews along with Radio and Trainman.

Thanks Yael, I really appreciate that. My next live will more than likely be from the new Royal Princess next November(November???)

They seriously jump dumped them in another country? You would think you would have to do something pretty terrible for that treatment.

From the stories we heard RCCL has a "zero tolerance" policy to this, and many other activities. After seeing what happened, and hearing they were ejected at the next stop, we discussed this with many on the ship (waiters, bartenders, etc.) and found this is far more common than you would ever believe.

It sounds like there are people escorted off every cruise or 2...and it seems far more frequent in the Summer as a result of teenagers who do something that offends others, or causes a safety issue.

After hearing the stories, I actually agree with the policy. No one should jeopardize, or infringe on the experience of others. if they do, they should no longer be around others.

The 2 that were escorted off took it a bit too far...they had an opportunity to tone it down, but they chose not to. There was a fairly large group at the table...8. 10. 12 people...I'm really not sure. We walked into the CL at about 7:45-8 to grab a quick drink on the way to dinner. We could hear the ruckus from outside the door. When the door opened the noise level was VERY high...it was mostly this particular table. We sat in the lower level...they had a large table, or tables on the upper left level. When we tried to order our drinks from the waiter, we really had to speak loudly as the noise level was exceptionally high. I joked with my wife about how loud it must seem to the Chef's Table that had been seated above us at 7:30...not the quiet dinner they were expecting. In all of our cruises I have never heard this much noise in the CL.

Their table was covered in empty glasses...someone (who had been in the CL prior to us) that the waiter couldn't walk fast enough to keep drinks in their hands. It was kind of like a college frat party...but these were not young people :).

Anyway, we were watching this, and there was a table of 3 pretty close to their table. They seemed annoyed and one of the people walked over the Concierge-I assume to complain about the noise. I would also have assumed the Chef's Table may have called down. The Concierge walked over to this table and politely asked that they keep it down and walked away. As soon as he was around the corner they went right back at it. About 3 minutes passed and he came back...as soon as he came around the corner the group quieted down and started mocking him with "Shhhh" VERY loudly, and kept saying "we're supposed to be quiet"....laughing....and "Shhhh" as loud as they could. The Concierge approached the table and again asked that they tone it down...there was a woman at the end closest to him that started talking back, using pretty foul language, etc. The Concierge was miffed.

He went back to the desk and I assume he called security. 2 or 3 security folks came through the CL door and conferred with the Concierge. Again the noise was off the charts. Security then walked over to ask them to tone it down, and I assume started asking some, or all of them to go elsewhere. No one really went quickly, but one person left, then another, the 2 more, etc. There were 3 security people stationed around the CL watching the whole thing.

As we left and headed to dinner most all of that table had gone, and the person who had complained was apologizing for getting anyone in trouble.

All of this happened in +/- 20 minutes...I have no idea what led up to this, or how long they were in there prior. That said we did see this group in the CL for breakfast most mornings-big table...yada, yada, yada. I heard they were there for lunch...and most of the "happy hour" each night.

The next day we heard from someone we met in the CL that 2 people had been told they were kicked off, and that they had been in the same room, had been separated and placed in 2 separate rooms with security stationed outside until they were escorted off in Cozumel a day and a half later.

We used the whole ordeal as a learning lesson for our teenagers...that they need to always respect others, and behave themselves.....we would not handle it well if they got us kicked off :).

I may have missed this, so apologies before! How does one book the behind the scenes tour? I had heard you needed to be in a suite. DH would love this tour! We are not diamond if that is a prerequisite.

I recall seeing this mentioned in the Cruise Compass on Day 5 or Day 6 with instructions on how to attend. The tour was on Day 7. I can dig up the info when we finally get unpacked if you want the details. We were in a suite and did not have a special invitation for this. It did sound great...I wish we would have done this.

There are no prerequisites to booking the behind the scenes tour. Go to guest services to book this. It's 150 dollars and takes place on either day 5 or 7 with times of either 8 or 9:15am. Your sea pass account will not be charged until the conclusion of the tour

Threatening should certainly result in a boot. I misunderstand that they were being loud and rowdy.

Don't get me wrong. I don't intend to go to formal nights in the big dining room as it seems in poor taste, and rude, to join people in formal attire when one chooses not to wear it.

My point was the whole idea seems of another era when cruising was for the upper class only.

Is the food of a quality that would match formal attire?

Like I said it makes sense in the smaller fine dining establishments. It just seems odd in a giant dining room.

It's certainly silly that people would ruin others experience when there are something like 20 other places to eat if you don't want to wear formal attire.

Thanks for the great review Chris. You've done so much for us already, but do you think you could post the cruise Compasses for your sailing? We are doing the same sailing in a few weeks and I would really like to figure out our schedule. Thanks so much!

I was going to do that, even had them in a nice little stack to put in my carry on. Then I walked out of my junior suite on Saturday and completely forgot about them. So please accept my apologies for not being able to post them on here

And now as promised what did really anger me on this cruise, which as I said a complaint to a very nice and receptive restaurant manager named Nick will resolve for future cruises.

Our second formal night was also lobster night before we arrived in Cozumel. Formal means FORMAL. Wear a tuxedo, a suit, for the women a nice dress or business suit. At least make the effort to dress up for formal night in the MDR. If you do not want to dress up there are plenty of other venues for you dine at.

I do fault the people for showing up at the MDR not properly dressed for formal nights but I put even more fault on the MDR for going ahead and seating people who were wearing t-shirts, tank tops, shorts, flip flops while the rest of us have made the effort.

I find it unacceptable that the MDR staff did not enforce the dress code. If you're not wanting to offend people who want to dine on lobster in the MDR by turning them away you ARE offending the rest of us who properly dressed for the occasion. Again, FORMAL MEANS FORMAL.

When I was on the Eurodam and Ruby Princess the dress code was enforced. I watched them turn people away and when those said diners got angry they were calmly told by the manager "I'm sorry, you are not properly dressed for the dining room and I can't now allow you to dine here."

Let's hope this practice is enforced on future cruises aboard Oasis.

I agree with you in wishing that the dress codes were enforced. I will admit that I have never seen anyone turned away even on Princess. Although, on Princess more passengers seem to follow the guidelines. Perhaps Princess passengers have better reading comprehension.;):D

On Oasis, we were seated very close to the dining room entrance and I did notice that a few came in with shorts on formal nights. Those people looked SO out of place....it's just ridiculous.

Thank you for your detailed review with all the pictures....very nicely done. I see you are on the Royal next year....I hope you are planning to do a reivew with pictures on that cruise....that ships looks amazing as well...Royal Princess is DEFINITELY on my future list!:D

The food to me on this cruise seemed to be very good and most people I talked to felt the same way. At least you understand where I am coming from when it comes to people not dressing properly for the MDR or at least even making an attempt to do so. As you said there are many other choices for people who do not want to dress up for formal night to dine at. The bad about Oasis(very few)

I think the constant reminding of filling out the survey and rating everything excellent was annoying. Especially when our waiter at Chops kept reminding us about it during the whole meal. That I did complain to the manager about. This is also being discussed on another thread. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that seems very annoyed by this constant reminding of a survey and how I should fill it out.

The wait time for an elevator seemed to be at times very long. I can understand right after a show or dinner but even no one was around it felt like placing a bet to see which elevator might eventually get to you. At times I ended just taking the stairs.

Thanks for the great review. Loved going along with you on your cruise.

In 2010 when I was on the Oasis we had a forward cabin and used those elevators most the time. Do not remember having long waits when it wasn't a peak time.

This year on the Allure when no one was using the elevators there was a long wait. Elevators were either all up or all down. On one of those occasion I was waiting at a bank 6 elevators and 4 of them were on level 3 and never moved for 3 minutes. I never saw any kids fooling with the elevators.

I was going back through this thread and noticed that again for some odd reason the picture I wanted to post did not and instead a double post of the last picture appeared so I wanted to correct that before heading to bed.

Here's the view from the bridge during the ship tour

Have to say this subject has been beaten to death,,,,we have seen people come into dinner in shorts and tank tops,,we don't agree, but personally the staff cannot do much about that...After many cruises,,we have dressed down some,,jacket yes for hubby,,but no tie,,long sleeve shirt looks very nice and neat also with a nice pair of slacks...We used to take so many dressy clothes and never used them,,so packing has gotten lighter:D
