hbear Posted January 4, 2013 #27 Share Posted January 4, 2013 But, we didn't consider them upgrades. On one trip Princess upgraded us two decks to mid ship below the pool. We heard chairs scraping all day. Recently, on our Hawaii cruise Princess upgraded us to the cabin at the front of the ship. We didn't like looking down at the ropes and equipment. Also limited photo ops due to narrow peripheral view.

Now, our daughter is taking our grandchildren on those same wonderful, educational trips! They all loved the last two summers of Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Mt Rushmore, and so many other beautiful American parks. They also did a "Disney week" and enjoyed it, too. I have actually lost count of my nights at sea, but if you care to count them for me they are listed in my signature! I'm booked on Navigator in February, and we'll probably go on Liberty in March. We also bought a popup trailer fall of 2011, and enjoy weekend breaks in the state parks closeby. We really just love any form of travel! John says no European cruise this summer, but the summer's not here or over yet!;)

Nice little get away without the cost of airfare. Tell John you gotta go to the Med. Barcelona itself is worth the trip alone as you know. :)
nybumpkin Posted January 5, 2013 #32 Share Posted January 5, 2013 On Carnival Conquest, we went from an aft wrap balcony (DH and me) and adjacent aft balcony (two sons) to one grand suite for the four of us - with our sons' entire cruise fares credited. It ended up costing us much less than what we originally booked. Someone REALLY wanted that aft wrap balcony. Had to give up the extra bathroom (as well as the nicer balcony), but cost-wise it was a really good deal.
dmwnc1959 Posted January 5, 2013 #33 Share Posted January 5, 2013 Regular balcony to a SkySuite on Celebrity Galaxy 12-night cruise LA-Vancouver via Alaska and the Inside Passage. Now that was an amazing cruise.

pris993 Posted January 5, 2013 #35 Share Posted January 5, 2013 First upgrade we got was on HAL Statendam, from a balcony to a full suite, 10 days Carbbean, in March. Wonderful. TA went after for us and surprised us. Received a upgrade from small balcony to a delux on Princess, the original Royal Princess - all balcony ship. Larger cabin on 12 day Baltic, also very nice. First cruise of the season in May, so suspect that is how it happened. Lastly on Celebrity, we got upgraded from a CC cabin to a Royal Suite on a 10 day out of SF to Mexico, which we enjoyed a lot. TA managed it. We generally book the cabin we want, do not request upgrades, so we have been lucky to get these, generally arranged by our TA. leaveitallbehind Posted January 5, 2013 #36 Share Posted January 5, 2013 JS to GS on Explorer. And I know the OP mentioned no upsells but have to mention one that was outstanding: 6 of us in 3 D8's to 3 GS's on Oasis for $75 / pp.
cruisingwithtwins Posted August 17, 2013 #37 Share Posted August 17, 2013 I've never been upgraded, but my mom gets upgraded almost every time. Ocean view Obstructed to Balcony, guarantee Ocean view to mini suite and others. She's been upgraded on Holland, Princess, Norwegian and Carnival. Only RCCL stiffs her on the upgrades...lol
marco Posted August 17, 2013 #38 Share Posted August 17, 2013 We booked minimum guarantee and ended up with the 2nd from the highest category. We always book minimum guarantee and I can't remember the last time we actually got a minimum rate cabin, but only once did we get this kind of an upgrade. dustyroad Posted August 17, 2013 #40 Share Posted August 17, 2013 on our carnival spirit cruise our oceanview got bumped up to a balcony because a big group wanted our block of cabins. I didn't know it until we got to check in. what a wonderful surprise. :)
notalandlover Posted August 17, 2013 #41 Share Posted August 17, 2013 A few years ago I was able to get OBC due to price reductions. The upgrade fairy called and I was able to use the OBC to upgrade from an interior to a balcony. It cost 175 bucks of OBC or all three people

boulders Posted August 18, 2013 #43 Share Posted August 18, 2013 Disney - booked an inside guarantee with kids sail free, got a balcony. :D Royal Caribbean - booked 2 oceanviews, upgraded after final payment to JS and balcony due to residency pricing Princess - got downgraded 3 days before sailing and got a 50% refund (or maybe it was OBC) All of these cruises were 11-14 days in length. Maybe that has something to do with it?
pris993 Posted August 18, 2013 #44 Share Posted August 18, 2013 We have been lucky over the years. We got an upgrade to a balcony on the old Royal Princess on a Baltic cruise. The old Royal had very small cabins, so the upgrade was a real bonus. Next upgrade we got was from a balcony to a full suite on the Statendam on a 10 day Carribean... wonderul cabin and cruise. Can't beat breakfast on the balcony... with lots of room at a full table, bathroom with jauzzi and walk in closests. Last upgrade, was on Celebrity Mercury to a Royal Suite on 10 Mexican Riviera cruise. We got each of these at no additional costs. Each a real treat. In each case, our TA is the one that got these upgrade for us.
jmf123 Posted August 18, 2013 #45 Share Posted August 18, 2013 For our Voyager cruise I had booked an Inside ROS (run of ship). Upon boarding, we found ourselves totally shocked to open the door to a balcony stateroom! Our first (but not last) balcony! :D
kpott77 Posted August 18, 2013 #46 Share Posted August 18, 2013 Was upgraded from Oceanview to a Grand Suite on my very first cruise. Upon check-in they told us our room had been changed, but didn't say it was upgraded. I was really upset because we had a party of 10 & had booked 5 rooms next to each other. Got on the ship & realized our entire party had been upgraded to suites. But since it was everyone's first time on a cruise, it took us a while to figure out that we'd received a serious upgrade. Wasn't until we walked past other staterooms & glanced in that we realized how incredibly lucky we were!

Lovemychoos Posted August 24, 2013 #48 Share Posted August 24, 2013 Many, many years ago, we had booked an inside cabin on the old Arcadia with P&O. 4 days before our cruise, my husband just happened to be at home at lunchtime, and took a call from our TA asking if we would like an upgrade (they used to ask you then, lol). He said, as all good husbands do, he'd check with me and get back to them. The TA was somewhat taken aback, as it was to a mini-suite, at no cost to us  Bless him, he still said he'd ring me straight away and ring her back. You have no idea how quick our conversation was so he could do just that, lol. Anyway, we were met at check in and escorted straight into the ship. We had a wonderful time, as you can imagine. Blimey P&O, them were the days :) Lou
JimAOk1945 Posted August 24, 2013 #49 Share Posted August 24, 2013 We received a free upgrade from a mini suite to a full suite on Caribbean Princess a few years ago. It was a New England/Canada cruise round trip from NY. Fantastic suite! We were on the starboard side of the ship. From our balcony, we saw the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island on sail away and saw them both again when we woke up on disembarkation morning.
