sissy2000 Posted January 19, 2013 #1 Share Posted January 19, 2013 I know this is very subjective, but what is the best time you have found (least crowded) to use the self serve laundries on the ship?
-Lew- Posted January 19, 2013 #2 Share Posted January 19, 2013 We've found late at night and port days when you're staying onboard to be the best. Lew

dmwnc1959 Posted January 19, 2013 #6 Share Posted January 19, 2013 Here are pictures I took on Ruby Princess this past December of the self service laundromat on Caribe Deck forward. There were two washers and two dryers on each side. Port side looking across Starboard side looking across Information display
Nomsayin Posted January 19, 2013 #7 Share Posted January 19, 2013 We bring our own detergent and quarters, rather than rely on the bill changer and vending machines in the laundry room.
Carpe_Diem Posted January 19, 2013 #8 Share Posted January 19, 2013 Hi, We (my wife and I) were on the Emerald Princess during the new year's 10 day cruise and did four loads of laundry during that time. We only washed our "wash and wear" items onboard and brought our few delicate items back home with us, instead of risking damaging them in the dryer. We brought Tide Pods (a 14 pack we bought at WalMart in Canada) to use, however, chose not to use fabric softner for our laundry washing and drying. The leftover Tide Pods were given to our room steward at the end of the cruise. We got $15.00 worth of quarters from the passenger services desk, which limited the minimal weight of carrying our own quarters on board. We did try to buy a pack of fabric softner from the laundry room dispensers one time, however, the machine was empty and we weren't sure how often it was refilled. Our best times to do laundry were early morning or on port days where we weren't getting off right away. Enjoy your cruise and feel confident in using the self serve laundry machines as they are simple to use and very economical. Cheers! thinfool Posted January 19, 2013 #9 Share Posted January 19, 2013 We went about 6 am on a sea day. No problem, had the whole laundry to ourselves....however.... determine what time the self serve laundry opens. It seems to vary from ship to ship. The hours may be posted or you can as the cabin attendants nearby.
Pam in CA Posted January 19, 2013 #10 Share Posted January 19, 2013 When I did laundry on the ship, I did it at about 4:00pm. I never had a problem getting a washer and then dryer on any ship at that time. I'd be done just after 5:30pm.
madjohn Posted January 19, 2013 #11 Share Posted January 19, 2013 I have gone on longer cruises with children and have had to do laundry. I try and be standing at the door when it opens. If I remember it is 7 or 8 in the morning. Don't try and do it the first sea day after a port day because it will be busier. I go to the store and buy a laundry detergent (can remember name) but it comes in hard flat sheets, the sheets work as a drier sheet as well as having the detergent for the wash. With these you don't have to worry about a powder or liquid and they can be easily packed. Also, the best place to get the quarters is at the casino, usually no line. I stop in when the casino first opens and get a couple of rolls.
caribill Posted January 19, 2013 #12 Share Posted January 19, 2013 Usually no problem getting a washer and dryer when most passengers are eating dinner. If there are many Europeans on board, avoid Sundays at it appears that is a preferred day to do laundry for many of them.

ginnynj Posted January 20, 2013 #17 Share Posted January 20, 2013 Others have posted that Purex has discontinued manufacturing these but they may still be available on Amazon. Did use Amazon to purchase these recently since they make the perfect laundry kit in a zip lok bag, and I bring along some quarters too. Best time I've found is AM of port days, since many folks scramble off for tours, and after 26+ on Princess, we probably do not :-)

RNGALNG Posted January 20, 2013 #20 Share Posted January 20, 2013 I was just on the Sapphire and the machines are stacked on top of each other in the rooms. Washer was on bottom, dryer on top. I did a load before our first port - midday (Hawaii cruise) and got a washer with no problems. I also did another load when we returned on our last port day so I wouldn't have to do it again for the rest of the trip. Midday again, no problem getting a washer and then I also got to use the time remaining on one of the dryers at no cost to me! There was a very kind lady who shared! People on this cruise were very nice in the room. Only once did I see a wet load sitting on the table by the sink that someone didn't come to dry. I stayed the full time and they never did come to get it! Most others just looked at the time that the load would take, and went off to do other things. I found it just as easy to read my book there, than to walk back to the room (this time it was too cool to sit outside.) Washers are large enough to get a lot of clothes in them as well. Have fun!
