Fire on Carnival Triumph. No engines, running on emergency generators.

Yes, I know that it must be much worse on the Triumph...but it is disgusting to wake up to that after paying thousands for a trip.

The conditions must certainly be disgusting but as for paying thousands - not so. My friends were just on a 3 day Carnival cruise from Miami to the Bahamas - $568 for the 3 days for 3 adults. I'm sure this weekend voyage had very similar pricing.

Well, in the case of the Triumph, Force Majeure will prevent them from being in any violation.

I just addressed this and explained how they do have jurisdiction.

The reason the USCG has not boarded the ship is they have not deemed this a law enforcement mission. It is an escort, associated with a Search and Rescue mission. But, should the Triumph attempt any action deemed unsafe by the USCG, they certainly can change their hats.

I think I'd jump overboard. It seems that being picked up by the USCG and spending a few days on a clean ship with working toilets and hot food, it might be worth the court date. At that point I'd plead temporary insanity. I can't imagine any jury disagreeing.

One thing you left out is how those other cruiselines dealt with the situation. Carnival falls flat compared to them

I have noticed that you come on all these threads and say the same thing about how Carnival has failed in how they handled this. Several people have asked you what more they could have done or what they could have done differently in your opinion and you have yet to give a clear answer. So, tell us exactly what you think Carnival could have done to deal with this situation better?

Oh - and I am not a cheerleader, just want a clear answer from you.

Oh Lord NO! She still has an axe to grind with RCI over a cruise she took almost 8 years ago! And never hesitates to spew her bitter drivel on the RCI boards about how terrible they are.

She is like a broken record.

Yup, I do have an ax to grind with RCI. Until they make it right I'll continue to grind.

Two years after Pan Am 103 caused a major loss of consumer confidence in the brand, they folded.

Pan Am had been in severe financial trouble since deregulation in 1978.

This is more akin to one of the many airlines who have stranded pax on the tarmac for hours and hours after snowstorms. There's a big to-do about it when it happens, then it fades.

Anyway I hope you're right to some extent as I'd love to pick up stock around $20.

On handling passengers:

I was booked on Mariner for RCCL when a hurricane delayed it by 2 days. Before we left on our flight (which luckily Jetblue changed without a fee) we called and said we absolutely had to know if it would make it into Port Canaveral because our young child could not take the 4 hour bus ride to Miami.

We were assured it would make it into Port. Well when we got to Orlando we found no RCCL people to greet us. Waited 2 hours to finally find someone. He recommended the Quality Inn (we didn't book air through RCCL so they didn't help with the hotel). Let me tell you about the Quality Inn at MCO. Hookers in the lobby. Stains, nasty stains on the bed sheets. I slept in a chair holding my son in my arms that night because it was gross and it was after 11 PM when we finally got there. Then in the lobby checking out my wife's purse went missing while she was at the counter (it was crowded). So then we had to go nuts getting her paperwork to get on the ship.

Oh did I mention? The ship didn't make it into PC. It went to Miami so they put us on a bus. My kid did pretty well for 2 hours then it was meltdown time. RC gave us $300 OBC and a 50% off voucher for next cruise. Of course it had to be used within the year so we weren't actually able to use it.

I love Royal Caribbean but that was an absolute nightmare.

The least people should be feeling is angry at the Cruise lines. It could very well be a matter of life or death, and has been and if they continue it will be again. It wasn't an accident when you have problems with a vessel that is suppossed to be safe, continue to operate it when questionable and you have people paying for their life to be taken care of while in the Cruise line's, that's hugh. These Cruise lines make billions on your misfortune, if you read the reviews these problems with ships are growing and growing. There is no defense that justifies this when there have been prior questions about ships and maintenance. If a plane were to fall out of the sky for poor maintenance would you say, poor airlines well they are giving me a free ticket if I survive? I felt nervous when we booked on the Splendor recently,I learned from here, thank God of its past issues. Its not going to be enjoyable, it will be waiting to be woken up to an alarm. That was caused by a record of neglect on the Cruise lines, hoping we manage to miss it. The attitude of hey, its not so bad is exactly what feeds the fuel of providing sub par services, and trying to get away with it. Its not the first incident and I'm sure not the last, it did make me think and choose not to plan my next cruise, yes.

Are you denying they haven't had more than their share of incidents?

No axe, just reality.

I have not done an exhaustive analysis of incidents and I wouldn't know how one would compare such diverse accidents as the fire aboard Triumph, that aboard Allure, and the one on NCL Dawn, let alone the number of less publicized incidents involving accidents aboard or around cruise ships.

My perception is that Carnival Cruise Lines given its size is about middle of the pack. Costa Cruises leads with some spectacular incidents unrelated to equipment failure. That said, middle of the pack when it comes to safety is really not the place to be and I would hope that Carnival Cruise Lines expends some resources to improve its record.

Questions will & should be asked and hopefully the BMA and NTSB reports will provide answers. Their reports will establish the reality of the Triumph incident.

From pg 21 of Carnival Shareholder Report compiled by Griffin Consulting Group (pub. 4.11.12)

“Carnival has a notably worse safety record than other cruise companies. While there is no public database of major cruise accidents such as the Costa Concordia disaster, the Center for Disease Control does track all major viral outbreaks on cruise lines. In the 2009-2011 period, Carnival-owned companies accounted for 56% of all viral outbreaks, compared to a 48% average market share (p=.11).i Additionally, Princess Cruises had 10 outbreaks, or 20% of total outbreaks, despite only having a 6% market share (p=.001). The company is also thought to have a worse safety record for persons lost at sea, especially in the Carnival brand: of the 179 disappearances since 2000, Carnival Cruise Line alone accounts for nearly 30% of them.6

These statistics suggest that risk is not simply inherent to the business of cruising: it varies across company and even more strongly across brand lines. The single largest step Carnival could take is integrating safety as a key value in its corporate culture. Carnival’s current values are summarized on a recruiting website: “Quality. Service. Hospitality. Friendliness”.7 Adding a corporate focus on safety is not a short-term solution, but if successfully implemented in the long term Carnival could significantly reduce downside risk.”

Seriously? You are defending CCL and their poor mx practices?

wow! you are drinking some serious Carnival Kool Aid.

Not drinking anything but the news and people on here are only listening to a couple of negative comments. I'm sure once the triumph is docked there will be many passengers that will have a different view of the conditions on board. As far as the op that I started. Many on here want to bash carnival. My point is that accidents happen industry wide. I cruise carnival because I like the product they over other lines.

mx? I'll assume is mechanical?

Had a car with a radiator problem. Had several parts that led into the radiator (thermocouplor? things) fixed, finally the radiator blew. Should I have replaced the whole radiator when mechanical logic said it was this small, easy part to fix?

Kool Aid no, but I always give the benefit of the doubt, even to you. I know our views aren't the same on some basic levels. I don't think your basic views are wrong but you would probably think mine are.

So should they not interview people who may have been in contact those on board? This is very big news for those of use who like to cruise and I'm glad it will get coverage from all the networks rather than hiding the information like the cruse lines would prefer.

Indeed - alas the Carnival spinmeisters on this board don't want the truth to come out

Has anyone heard from anyone on the ship today? My eyes are too tired to read back 100 pages or so.

: ) thanks

No reports that I've seen. Pax onboard only have contact when another ship is nearby. I suspect we'll start seeing reports roll in tonight as they approach the coast and start picking up land-based cell towers.

What spinmeisters? What truth? Refusing to speculate isn't "spin". We haven't heard a live report from the ship since Monday. Reports from Carnival are that most toilets are working and there is running water since Monday, and that there has been plenty of food the entire time. We'll find out soon enough if that was a lie, and if it was then it was an extremely stupid lie.

A Carnival cruise is cheap, cheap, cheap. That's apparently a huge appeal and there are plenty of CCL cheerleaders around (just take a look at these boards) so I'm sure CCL be around for a long time. The ones that do lose confidence may jump ship (no pun intended). I tend to believe you get what you pay for.

So how close to shore will they have to be to get reliable cell service? I have read they are going to park them 50 miles off shore tonight and finish the trip into Mobile tommorow????

I would really like to talk to my wife and find out how she is doing!!!!!
