Celebrity Century.....February 17 - March 4..........Did not enjoy this cruise

Hi,

I too was on this cruise. The cruise did not live up to my expectations. I too am a smoker and we booked a Veranda. We booked over a year ago and the no smoking was not in place then. It has only been in effect for only 9 months. This comes from a supervisor in Guest Relations. But not smoking on the Veranda did not bother me because I met a lot of great people.

My husband and I had 2 nd seating in the MDR. The food was dry and overcooked and even cold at times. My husband had the Gastric by pass ( weight loss surgery ) 5 years ago. He cannot eat anything overcooked or well done. He got sick 2 times. Beef was well done and he ordered it rare. He ordered it rare so that when he got his dinner it would be medium rare. The buffet was much better and a better variety to choose from. We went to the Murano and had an excellent experience there. They even offered a discount to get people to come to the restaurant. The Murano is priced at $40.00 a person. Since there specialty restaurants went up so high not many people are going. So they come around and offer 40% off. Then they offered you to come back @ $20.00 a person.

How about the guys wearing shorts at the SMART FORMAL. My husband did it the first night and was told politely not to wear them again. Being at sea 5 days there should have been a CASUAL ATTIRE. The 2 nd night someone was hiding behind his wife because he was wearing shorts. Then the ones wearing jeans to the FORMAL NIGHTS and not a word being said. We saw it for ourselves because we were at the first tables as you enter the MDR. The ones being handed a jacket on the FORMAL NIGHT.

I as being a smoker spent many days and nights on deck 11 smoking area. I have to say the weather was not good. I come from NC and the weather was warmer than what we had on this cruise. I looked at the weather and it said in the 70's but we didn't have that. It only got warmer as we got closer to Hawaii but it even rained while we were in Hawaii and all the way home. There should have been 1 bar for the smokers.

As for the bartender that was not nice. He was the one at the bar right by the smoking section. He was seen screaming at someone because he could not close until he had to be closed by his supervisor. Even when you order a drink from him he was not happy person.

Toilet bowl.......Did anyone have problems? Numerous people did. Someone at the beginning of the cruise was SEASICK and her toilet did not flush. It took 2 days to be fixed. Is this right??? Was this fair to this person? The person above me on deck 10 flushed his toilet and the water hit the wall. It happened a few times. He was so embarassed until he heard of someone elses unfortunate problem. This poor lady went to the bathroom and instead of the water going down after she flushed it. The water went up and exploded all over her BUTT. If that happened to me I would have been mortified. Some people on Deck 8 did not have cold water in there shower. They were told that it won't be fixed until the 27th.:D

Was anyone up about 5:30 am the day we went to Kona. Did anyone hear the loud noise?? If you didn't you were woken up by it. Then what did we see, the lifeboat being towed to the mainland. I was on the first tender.... NO ONE TOLD US WHAT HAPPENED!!! It wasn't until we arrived at the dock and saw the lifeboat. Upon arrival was 2 ambulances, 1 police van and a firetruck. No one would say what had happened. We found out what had happened after we got back to the ship. Heard from a good source that saw the lifeboat dangling when the cable snapped. Thank God there was only minor injuries............BUT it could have been a lot worse. God forbid while there was an emergancy like the TRIUMPH. I don't even want to go there.

Does anyone remember the 2 nd FORMAL NIGHT? Did anyone have the brown water coming from the sink. Due to the problem in the Galley. Anyway I was told to run the water in my sink for 10 minutes. My sink over flowed and I had to throw all my clean towels floor to soak up the water. The call Guest Relations to send a plumber to my stateroom. He fixed the problem and had the towels replaced. But he did not clean the counter off I had to do it when we came back to our room. This same night my sister in law was taking a shower to get ready for FORMAL NIGHT. She had to rinse off with bottled water. The stateroom attendant brought her water to rinse with. We were on deck 9 in Concierge.

The 3rd FORMAL NIGHT someone vomitted at the table and a HAZMAT team came in to clean it. Our lobster tail was burnt and dry. My husband walked out of dinner because he was so fed up it was not worth complaining about it. He just went back to the stateroom and went to sleep.

I know that the idea of relaxing on a Celebrity Cruise is what they stride for. We did have not so good weather.........cold, chilly, winds, and rain. I enjoyed the tours we took in Hawaii. The Arizona is a must see. The Volcanos was awesome even at night. The Hawaiian Group.... June, Gerri, and Lahaina made our days at sea pass the time away. Jamie teaching us the Thriller Flash Mob was alot of fun. I only wished that there was more to do after the theme parties. I am in my 50's and like a little more entertainment at night. Even at poolside too. A deck party at night would have been nice too. I chose this cruise because we were on the Equinox 3 months after her maiden voyage. It was a wonderful experience had by all. I wanted the same for this trip. We did put a $100.00 open passage deposit. We are looking at The Eclipse Southern Caribbean in December so I am looking to give Celebrity another chance. :D

Hi, sorry you did not enjoy your cruise but whoever told you the smoking

policy has been in place for only a year gave you very wrong information.

The policy for No smoking went into effect in October 2008 so it has

been 5 years.

Here is the information:

Celebrity Cruises has announced that, beginning October 1, 2008, a no-smoking policy goes into effect in staterooms and verandas. Passengers who are caught smoking will find $250 added to their tab, a charge for cleaning the stateroom.

Designated indoor areas where guests can smoke cigarettes include the port side of one lounge per ship and a designated slot machine area in each ship’s casino. The new policy also designates outdoor areas where guests can smoke. These include the port side of the pool deck and sundecks on each ship, the port side of the Sunset Bar on Celebrity Century and on Celebrity’s Millennium class of ships, and the port side aft outside of Winter Garden on Celebrity Galaxy and Celebrity Mercury. Celebrity’s new Solstice class of ships, launching with Celebrity Solstice late this year, will follow the new policy beginning with the first sailing. Celebrity Solstice’s Lawn Club and the Sunset Bar at the Lawn Club will not allow smoking.

The new policy will go into effect on Celebrity’s fleet on the first day of the first sailing to follow October 1:

Celebrity Galaxy, Celebrity Infinity, Celebrity Mercury – October 3 sailings

Celebrity Summit – October 4 sailing

Celebrity Constellation – October 5 sailing

Celebrity Century, Celebrity Millennium – October 6 sailings

Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Equinox – upon ship launch

When going to the toilet do you flush when you are still sitting down? I always flush when I am standing up especially on a ship because it does go wooooooshhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

You would have to be an acrobat to flush a ship's toilet while sitting on it:eek: The button is behind the seat.

Lois is right -- the "no veranda smoking" policy has been in force on X for years. What the GR person may have been thinking about was the total indoor ban on smoking, which only went into effect a year or so ago. But, trust me -- both policies were in place (and enforced) when I was on Century, last April -- it was great!

With all the smoking restrictions on land (at least here in the US), I am always flabbergasted by people who book cruises without thoroughly researching the smoking policies of the various lines. Yes, if you want to smoke on your balcony, there are plenty of ships where you can do that. Celebrity just isn't (and hasn't been for some time) one of them!

Hi,

I too was on this cruise. The cruise did not live up to my expectations.

My husband had the Gastric by pass ( weight loss surgery ) 5 years ago. He cannot eat anything overcooked or well done. He got sick 2 times. Beef was well done and he ordered it rare.

Getting beef prepared to order is always a challenge when the galley is preparing food banquet style. None the less, I can understand your husband's frustration.

Then the ones wearing jeans to the FORMAL NIGHTS and not a word being said.

Do we really have to go here again? Why do people let themselves get bothered by what others where or don't wear?

I have to say the weather was not good. I come from NC and the weather was warmer than what we had on this cruise. I looked at the weather and it said in the 70's but we didn't have that.

I wouldn't enjoy that either, but it's not Celebrity's fault.

Toilet bowl.......Did anyone have problems? Numerous people did. Someone at the beginning of the cruise was SEASICK and her toilet did not flush. It took 2 days to be fixed. Is this right??? Was this fair to this person?

No, but how does HER toilet not functioning properly affect YOUR cruise?

The person above me on deck 10 flushed his toilet and the water hit the wall. It happened a few times. He was so embarassed until he heard of someone elses unfortunate problem. This poor lady went to the bathroom and instead of the water going down after she flushed it. The water went up and exploded all over her BUTT.

Scratching my head at this one....how or why would one remain seated on the toilet while flushing it? And again, how does HER toilet malfunction affect YOUR cruise?

If that happened to me I would have been mortified. Some people on Deck 8 did not have cold water in there shower. They were told that it won't be fixed until the 27th.:D

Once again, how is this YOUR problem?

Then what did we see, the lifeboat being towed to the mainland. I was on the first tender.... NO ONE TOLD US WHAT HAPPENED!!!

Maybe they didn't want to cause panic. Maybe they wanted to find out what happened first. Maybe a lot of things.

Being bothered by brown water I can understand. Being upset because ::gasp:: the maintenance man forgot to wipe the countertop? Nope, can't understand that one.

The 3rd FORMAL NIGHT someone vomitted at the table and a HAZMAT team came in to clean it. :D

You would prefer that maybe the waiter clean it up himself with your dinner napkin?

While I can see that there are some things that would be disappointing, just like in the other thread we have someone complaining about a bunch of other things that didn't actually affect them personally. I don't get that.

That toilet thing really puzzles me -- I think that's why the button on every ships toilet we've ever been on is dead center behind the toilet at a height that requires you to close the lid before flushing.

I know I'm not as nimble as I used to be, but I don't think I could do it while seated even if for some reason I wanted to

. . . This poor lady went to the bathroom and instead of the water going down after she flushed it. The water went up and exploded all over her BUTT.

I've heard onboard comedians use variations of this joke.

The no smoking policy was my fault for not looking into it. SMOKERS have rights to.

The food in the MDR to me was not very good. The buffet was much better and more choices. The Murano was excellent.

Yes Celebrity tends to be more dressier for dinners than other cruises. But when people break the rules and nothing is said. This is not right.

The weather is no ones fault. Unfortunately it rained every day.

As for the brown water in my bathroom. Everyone had it. Unfortunately my sink overflowed.

My sister in laws was showering for dinner. The water stopped in her shower. I was in the stateroom next to her. We were fine. People talk. They share there experiences with each other. A lot of the experiences were not nice ones. This is what I tried tell everyone. Maybe if something not to pleasant happened to you. You would not have the attitude as you did to me.

This is not my first cruise either. This is my 7th one. You cannot satisfy everyone.

Is it me or...... In this day and age shouldn't smokers be grateful to have a place to go smoke? Want a smoke? Go to the designated place. Smoke. Done. Want another smoke? Go back.

Not disparaging smokers because I used to be one. But.... There are entire cities where public smoking is not allowed. No one can smoke in clubs and restaurants and stores and really ANYWHERE any more. Wy would it be magically different in close quarters with 3,000 people?

We were also on this cruise and had a cabin on deck 9 concierge, though I agree with your comment about the weather we did not have the same overall experience.

Our cabin was lovely, the steward was great at servicing the cabin. We never had any maintenance issues. There is a sign on the toilet to close before flushing otherwise the vacuum system will send water everywhere, have these people never been on a ship before.

We found the food in the MDR generally good and the service excellent. If anything our meat was undercooked, never over.

We were disappointed with the quality in the buffet. Getting food was not helped by the old style of the counters, the new Solstice style buffets are much better.

If you don't like formal you should not book a cruise line that requires it. Most did dress up, but we did see a few who did not bother, they seemed to wear the same clothes all day!

Century is still a lovely ship and we found the crew, particularly the bar staff excellent. This is probably the most friendly ship we have ever been on. If you are booked go with a positive attitude and you will not be disappointed. But if you are a smoker you will be in the minority.

I was puzzled too. I put the lid down then flush. The man above me did just that. He said the force of the water pushed the lid up and it hit the wall.

The other person said she flushed the bowl. While she was washing her hands the water hit her in the butt. She was on deck 4. Maintainance told her it was because we were on land and most of the passengers were not on the ship. Being everyone was coming back. The toilets were being used again. Air may have gotten in the pipes and caused this to happen.

Anything interesting beyond the usual trivia, cooking shows,

If you are interested in all the activities we had on our Hawaii cruise on the Century in November, you can see them in our review on our website www.thepreismans.com. There were more activities than a normal port intensive cruise due to there being so many sea days. I had been concerned about being too bored on this cruise; but was pleasantly surprised. We also had a great time and enjoyed the food. Perhaps a bit too much. :D

TY for the information. When we were on the Equinox 3 months after her maiden voyage. People were smoking on the Verandas and anywhere on the ship. Shame on me for not doing my homework. It was not only the smoking. The food in the MDR was not good. We cannot not blame the bad weather on Celebrity. I never thought it would have been so cool. Like I said I am looking to go on the Eclipse and hoping that it is just like the experience we had on the Equinox. Even though I did not enjoy this cruise. I did have good time with the people I have met. I tried to make the best out of a bad situation.

Gkad you were able to make the best of it with the people you met, that's always an important part of a cruise. But your comments about smoking are wrong. Equinox started cruising a full year after Celebrity put their smoking restrictions into place. There may have been a few sneaking a smoke on a veranda, as there always will be, but your characterization of smoking 'anywhere on the ship' is not possible.

This appears to be a major exaggeration as does the toilet descriptions.

And the ship didn't enforce the dress code? Your husband was told politely not to wear shorts to dinner; a man hid behind his wife sneaking in wearing shorts; the ship handed out jackets to those not wearing one, and your complaint was someone wearing jeans got in? Thats life where people ignore the rules or are ignorant of them and the ship has decided not to play Gestapo in all cases, or just isn't inspecting every last one of us.

Hope you enjoy your next cruise and hope you have better wx and either go on a smoking Line or understand the Line's rules and follow them. And don't let other peoples' exaggerations of their 'toilet adventures' bother you.

in certain locations...sure. Last time I was on Century was 2010 and

the AFT bar outside of the buffet, portside is a smoking area.

But as for a bar inside the ship? Nope, not going to happen.

TY for your input. I to am a reformed smoker that started smoking again. When we were on the Equinox my husband was able to smoke then on the Veranda. We had such a wonderful time on that cruise our expectations for the Century did not live up to it. Forget the smoking issue. That was our fault for not checking the smoking policy. We should be grateful for the smoking area.

We cannot blame Celebrity for the rainiest cruise. It can happen on a Caribbean cruise to. If I would have known I would have brought more in the way of pants.

Yes I did see the sign to close the lid when flushing the bowl. I feel better that someone besides me reads signs. lol. I just tried to bring this out for people to know of the hazards of the toilet flushing.

As for the FORMAL nights. We knew that Celebrity is much dressier than other cruises. My husband wore shorts the 1st night to the smart casual. He was told politely not to wear them. It was only because our luggage came up late. On other nights people came in with shorts and nothing was said. Our table was right by the door so we saw who came in. Even the FORMAL nights people were coming down without jackets and in jeans. I feel if you are not dressed properly you should not be allowed in the MDR. People ruin it for other people.

As for the food in the MDR we did not care for it. We ate at the buffet because there was more variety of choices. Our experience at The Murano was wonderful. All the bartenders except for one was excellent. Our stateroom attendant was a wonderful man. Even our waiter and the assit were excellent.

The Hawaiian group..........June, gerri and Lahaina was enjoyable. They kept us occupied on the sea days. The beyond the podium was ok. Had a lot of fun with the Thriller Flash Mob. The shows were okay. The theme parties were good but ended to early. We are in our fifties and there really wasn't much to do at night. It seemed by 10:30 everyone seemed to have went to bed. We enjoy sitting at poolside and there really much entertainment at poolside. It would have been nice to have a dancing under the stars one night. I think there was plans for one but it was cancelled due to the weather. Especially when you have 5 sea days going to and from Hawaii. Not stopping at Ensanada really didn't bother me. I wasn't getting off the ship anyway.

Even though this wasn't our best cruise. We did put a $100.00 open passage deposit. I like the Southern Caribbean 14 day on the Eclipse. We want to give Celebrity another chance only because of our first experience on the Equinox was wonderful.

I agree. Similarly, it was my fault for not reading HAL's smoking policies and I spent an entire cruise basically unable to use our balcony because the next door neighbors smoked nonstop from beginning to end. They were on their balcony day and night, which certainly wasn't HAL fault.

If I were a smoker, I wouldn't sail Celebrity. As a non-smoker, I'll never sail HAL again.

Which is a GOOD THING. When I was a smoker I was always so paranoid that people would smell smoke on me that I smoked outside, or by the stove hood, etc. Never in the car, never in a bedroom. I am living proof that you can smoke a pack a day in designated areas. You don't need to lounge by an ashtray with ten butts in it in a closed space to get the real feeling of smoking! Why not do it in a way where everyone is comfortable- those with breathing issues, those who are very irritated by cigarette smoke, and those who smoke.

Now that I'm a non smoker I hate the smell of cigarette smoke. It really is bad. If you're a smoker and you think I'm full of it, just look at the amount of people (like me) who loooove pipe smoke. Even a cigar smells great to me. But cigs just smell dirty. I would gladly sit in a smoking room with people with pipes.

I want to add that I understand that people smoke and I am not judging. What kind of a hypocrite would I be? I tried quitting about as many times as I've tried losing weight, but unlike the 5000 times on Atkins or Weight Watchers, I actually managed to put the smokes down 15 months ago. I never smoked while pregnant (5X) but otherwise, since I've been 15, cigarettes have waxed and waned in my life. But I kept it hidden, or I kept it in designated places long before there was such a thing as a designated place. So I'm not judging ;).
