Hotels in Venice area

Hello. I need help!! I am looking for a hotel near the cruise port for Venice. I have been told to look in Mestre as it is near the cruise port. But when I look on line, it says Mestre is near the airport. Is the cruise port near the airport?

 

I am confused!! I am looking for a hotel not in Venice (ok with taking bus or boat into Venice). It doesn't have to be fancy (only spending 1 night). Has to be clean, good / safe location, free breakfast, some kind of shuttle service to the cruise ship. We know hotels are not cheap, but we do have a limit of $300 -- that MUST include taxes & fees. Also do NOT want to be dragging our luggage while getting to the hotel.

 

Any suggestions? I have been searching the internet for 2 weeks now and just getting more confused.

I have. A lot of the hotels are IN Venice. I've heard it's hard to get to the hotels - a lot of walking, dragging your luggage around. Or by boat and it's over 100 Euros for that.

That's why we are looking for outside of Venice.

Is Mestre near the cruise port or airport or both?

I understand your pain. Venice is confusing until you get there and experience it.

 

We stayed at Hotel Santa Chiara in Venice in December. It is located right on the Grand Canal and Piazzale Roma is directly behind the hotel. This means you can go from the hotel to the cruise ship without using any steps or bridges. You can take the People Mover (a monorail with elevator access) from Piazzale Roma to the cruise port for 1 euro per person. There is also a direct bus from the airport to Piazzale Roma for 6 euros each.

 

The hotel includes a free breakfast buffet and it is very clean and safe. It might cost more than your budget (depending on the season), but you can save a lot of money on transfers, and hassles with luggage.

 

If you don't want to stay there, I recommend looking at nearby hotels although they probably involve bridges. Good luck!

The train is reasonable to get into/out of Venice. Bus would be easy to/from the airport. And a taxi to/from the pier.

 

I found this hotel, but my friend wanted to stay in Venice, so we opted for Ca' Doge right in Piazzale Roma.

Thank you! Actually we will be flying into Milan - spending the night - then taking the train into Venice. Saving a LOT of $$$$$$$ by doing it that way. Sure, more moving around and carrying our luggage, but to save almost $3,000 on airfare - it's worth it. Plus don't mind staying in Milan for a night ;)

We have stayed at the Hotel Triton a couple of times pre-cruise. It's in a great location across the street from the Venice Mestre railway station, reasonably priced, ample buffet breakfast and quiet. The staff are a delight - they will arrange tickets, recommend restaurants and arrange a cab to the port for you.

It would be easy to get off the train at Mestre, if arriving from Milan, and be in the hotel within two minutes.

There are trains every few minutes into the main station of Venice Santa Lucia.

Has anyone stayed at the Best Western Olimpia? It looks like a good hotel. Good location. Got good reviews on trip advisor. Just wanted to get a cruisers opinion.

Based on my research, look for hotels in the San Croce area. Check out the location carefully on the hotel website because you might like to be between the rr station and the cruiseport near Piazzale Roma. Venere dot com allows you to select Venice hotels by area which gives you a good overview of their location as to proximity to both train station and cruiseport.

There are two train stations in Venice. Mestre is on the mainland, but the advantage is that you could take a land taxi to your ship. St. Lucia is close to the port, and close to Piazzale Roma, where a number of hotels are located. From that location, you could take the People Mover for 1 euro per person to the port but it would be a bit more walking.

 

Personally I like staying in Venice proper. Yes, it's a bit more hassle with luggage but I like to be in the middle of things, especially in the evening and not worrying about getting back to an out-of-town location.

 

It's not that tough if you pack reasonably and can manage your luggage.

We are going to be in Venice in October for the first time also - booked at Hotel Arlecchino which is right next to the Best Western Olympia. Close to People Mover and Piazza Roma. Olympia also looked good but somehow I didn't want to stay in a Best Western while in Europe. Both are well reviewed. Only 1 bridge to cross over. A great website I found is Venicefor visitors - all kinds of great info.

We have stayed in Mestre twice - at a campground in 2001 and a sort of hostel in 2011. Both were a short busride away from Venice, and the busses run late into the night. We like to spend our money on more important things to us, great meals, gondola ride, vaporetto pass, etc.

 

The hostel is really more like a small conference centre. It was formerly a school and the rooms are large with big windows. Breakfast is included. http://www.allelagune.it/location.htm

It sounds like you haven't booked your flights yet. I highly recommend arriving 2 days before your cruise, especially since you're probably coming from California. I would devote that first day/night to rest and getting over jet lag.

That sounds fairly uncomplicated! Was breakfast included? The rates look pretty reasonable - relatively speaking :)

 

Our worry is that we'll get off the plane a bit grouchy from the long flight. We don't want to have to stress too much to get to the hotel!

Yes, breakfast was included and it was a pretty big buffet with lots to choose from. The hotel also has an elevator.

 

We couldn't believe how easy it was to use the airport bus and it cost only 6 euros a person. (And we always book private transfers in Rome for 50 euros plus a tip because we need easy. DH has walking issues.)

 

We took the bus the opposite way than you will (from Venice to the airport), but I wouldn't hesitate to take it from the airport to Venice. The bus leaves twice an hour and it takes you to Piazzale Roma. There are 2 buses that do this route for the same price. I recommend the ATVO bus because your big luggage goes underneath the bus and it doesn't make any stops. It is the "Venice Marco Polo Airport - Venice Piazzale Roma (express service)" bus. The other bus costs the same, but you have to bring your luggage into the bus with you and it makes lots of stops.

 

The hotel location was super convenient for cheap transportation (to the cruise port and airport) and it is right on the Grand Canal. That means no steps or bridges with your luggage. There is a vaporetto stop less than a minute walk from the hotel.

 

This hotel is very popular with cruisers so I recommend booking early if you want to stay there.

It is about 500 steps from the S. Stae vaporetto station, no bridges to cross and a charming place. It is currently #2 on Tripadvisor. We loved it, but had to book nine months in advance to get a room. Our room had a balcony looking out at a small canal, beautifully furnished, high wood beamed ceilings, felt very "Romeo and Juliet". 170EU night. Loved it.

If you are going to Venice and can afford it try to stay on the island, not Mestre. Part of the magic is staying on the islands, among the Renaissance buildings, the canals, the history.

To further help you place it, the Santa Chiara hotel is the building which shows at 0.30 in the this

 

We actually stayed in its annexe (about 70 yards away) and took breakfast in the main hotel. That will be fine too. All the best, Tony

I would agree that there is a magic attached to staying in Venice at night. Less crowds and you get that old world feel of the place in a way that just doesn't seem quite the same during the day.

We just booked Hotel Tritone for one night before our cruise in October. We are coming by train from Rome and although it is a short walk to P Roma from the S Lucia train station on Venice Island, there is the bridge to go over and with luggage I would not be able to do it.

 

Tritone is literally across the street from Mestre train station, nice flat walk, doable for me and DH with luggage. The price seems right, the hotel looks nice and has favorable reviews on Trip Advisor.

 

Best of all, the morning that we have to get to the port, we can catch a bus right by the hotel to take us to P Roma. From there it is the People Mover and a short walk (hopefully our ship will berth at close range to the People Mover).

Great to her this...we disembark our cruise in Venice and have reserved Hotel Tritone, based on tripadvisor recommendations. We also wanted to watch our budget and "been there, done that" with staying in the St. Marks area...figured with four adults, two children we were not up to schlepping our own luggage around the cobblestones and bridges, especially at the end of our journey! It appears to be very easy to get into Venice from there and very easy to get to the airport. Our group likes easy!

Best Westerns in Europe are individually owned and not at all like the BW hotels in the USA. There are some very nice hotels that use the BW marketing arm and I would never exclude a look simply because they pay BW to use their website and logo for marketing. Some of the highest rated properties in many European cities are members of the BW marketing alliance.
