tequilasunrise Posted August 27, 2013 #2 Share Posted August 27, 2013 True, but how gullible would you have to be to fall for that anyway? It's obvious they are getting a cut. No one does stuff like that just to be helpful. The cruise line gets money, the salesmen get money, the stores make money. The shoppers get products they want at convenience, albeit for more than they should have paid. I figure it's subsidizing my cruise, and it's making people who just want to shop without thinking about it, happy. We both win! :D

skynight Posted August 27, 2013 #5 Share Posted August 27, 2013 We never attend a port shopping talk. We have better things to do on vacation than shop. Have always known about the practice.
sunsetbeachgal Posted August 27, 2013 #6 Share Posted August 27, 2013 Thanks for sharing, Lew. My only unpleasant surprise about Alaska (the rest were pleasant) were all of the jewelry stores that looked like they had packed up from St. Thomas and gone north for the season. The employees did not seem to be locals either...
Rare PescadoAmarillo Posted August 27, 2013 #7 Share Posted August 27, 2013 The employees are mostly not locals, and many of them do come from the Caribbean during the summer months. It's a pity that so little of the cruise ship business actually benefits the local communities.

huskyguy Posted August 28, 2013 #10 Share Posted August 28, 2013 This "news" happened on February 4th - http://thecruiseexplorer.com/wordpress/alaska-cruise-ship-shopping-promoters-fined-for-deceptive-practises/ I agree that it was a great idea to stop at least some of the b.s.
