RCL handling of policy change

We always stay in a suite also and like to use our balcony to look at the ocean and relax. We love the sound of the sea, but we do not smoke and never, ever will because we choose to stay healthy. DH and I were talking about this earlier and have actually gone inside several times due to the smoke drifting onto our balcony. Your right to smoke doesn't override our right to breathe clean, fresh, ocean air.

 

Do you work? I'm betting you have to go outside to smoke there. Do you smoke inside your home? Or do you get dressed and go outside there also. We dont' allow anyone to smoke inside our home, but that hasn't been an issue for at least 25 years as none of our family or friends smoke.

 

The main point here is RCI has made a decision and it's not going to change, period.

 

I never ever smoke in my house, and I don't smoke around others. (But I also don't have to walk half way down my street to smoke either) I quit for 5 years and have an understanding of the nuisance of the stench. Although I smoke again, I can't stand the casinos on the ships. I think there has to be somewhere indoors that smokers can go that's well ventilated for days of bad weather, but I won't go into the casino. It smells like wet ashtrays.

I'm not trying to get RCI to change their policy. They've made their decision, as have I.

 

Also, I don't feel that I need to be lectured by anyone that I have a few months before the policy goes into effect so I should quit. Thank you very much!

As long as they update the policy on their web site I see no need to make sure every customer is personally made aware of the change.

 

As I stated in another thread, they could call every person booked on a Royal ship, put the announcement in a banner on their site in an enormous font, have gigantic signs at all ports of embarkation and there will still be those that claim they had no idea.

 

I've been meaning to ask this on several threads. But those of you who are upset do you cruise to smoke? Or do you cruise to cruise? Also, how many of those whining actually book balconies? There are too many threads about how expensive balconies and suites are and that to cruise a lot of people book inside. It seems a lot of posters are coming out of the woodwork who have never actually had a balcony, but are suddenly offended by the change.

 

It's not like it's a ban on smoking onboard. It's just a a ban on smoking on a balcony of which not every smoker even has.

 

Also, not sure why some think they should be told immediately. RCI doesn't know who smokes and who doesn't. It will trickle down just like EVERY change has.

All of these smokers should thank RCL for this updated policy and take the opportunity to stop smoking. It's almost 4 months until the start of the new policy, that should be plenty of time to kick the habit.

Did you read the announcement? They are actually expanding the outside areas that smokers can go to. "Lectured" LOL. If you choose to keep doing something that is so dangerous to your health, but not in your home or around anyone else, how can you be so offended by the change to the policy? You're asking anyone in a balcony around you to deal with it, but you won't do it in your own home. Hypocrisy?

It's just getting funny with all the "righteous" indignation. If anyone thinks RCI hasn't researched this, they're very, very wrong.

One thing is for sure. Right, wrong, or otherwise, Royal Caribbean changed the policy. You either abide by it or you don't. Everyone does have a choice to keep future bookings or cancel them. Everyone also has the choice to cruise other lines that still allow balcony smoking.

 

I'm sure if somewhere down the road it is in Royal Caribbean's best interest to allow balcony smoking again they will change the policy again.

This thread is about notification of policy changes. Common courtesy to send an email to those with existing reservations. Maybe there's no more towel animals or twice a day ice.....just saying it would be nice to know before hand, so expectations are set.....

Then I guess you'll be looking for a different cruise line.

IIRC when the policy on ice in your stateroom changed to you having to specifically request ice from your cabin steward no one was in an uproar. No email's were ever sent out, you only became aware of it once you got in your cabin and read the notice placed there of the change....... So what's the difference with the balcony smoking policy??

IIRC when the policy on ice in your stateroom changed to you having to specifically request ice from your cabin steward no one was in an uproar. No email's were ever sent out, you only became aware of it once you got in your cabin and read the notice placed there of the change....... So what's the difference with the balcony smoking policy??

We have no issue with the policy itself. However, IMO: Anyone with a existing cruise booked with RCI, whether direct or through a TA, for any change in policy, schedule, itinerary, etc. should receive an email notifying them that there has been a change affecting their booking.

For example, when there is a change in my flight, I get a notification "your schedule has changed" and the new information.

We currently have 4 cruises booked with RCL. My TA emailed me today with the notification. If I had booked direct, RCL should send the notice directly to me.

Nope, I'm sorry the attitude is the problem. All of the smokers should understand that the policy on RCL as well as many other cruise lines is changing. Smokers need an attitude adjustment and accept this fact. The question should be how can smokers change their attitude and behavior and adapt to this new policy. Taking the opportunity to quit smoking would solve the cruise issues as well as improve many other issues for smokers. I'm here to help and encourage smokers to adapt in a healthy and constructive manner. You can thank me later.

There is no part of their website that states this. Which is not much different to other "procedures" and "policies" that have been thrown out in this thread. That was the point of my post, I was expressing that there have been a lot of comparing "apples" to "oranges"......

I know this will never happen, and it has nothing to do with smells or health, but how would those that like to have a drink feel, if they got on the ship with no notification that the policy changed, and you could no longer drink in your cabin or on your balcony, but the only place you could drink was one small area on an outside deck.

 

RCI should notify those that have already booked of the change. To some, having a smoke on their balcony is just as important. They should be given the opportunity to cancel the cruise by being notified. There is only a small percentage of cruisers that are on CC. I for one would have never known about the change if I wasn't on CC.

I think you may have introduced the orange, as those things appear to be more about policy than your ice bucket...

I guess you have never heard of the euphimism of comparing apples and oranges. Many of the policies and procedures mentioned are like comparing an apple to an oranges, you cannot fairly compare an apple to an orange just like you cannot compare some of the policies and procedures that have been tossed out there in this thread.

You can still get ice in your cabin if you ask. You can't still ask for an ashtray to smoke on your balcony.
