now on GEM...

Just thought I'd give a heads up. We are now on day #8 - sea day on way back to NY.

They have been strictly following the 'virus precautions' onboard all week. Day 4 - in San Juan, Captain said they were scrubbing while we were all off the ship - but next day, hand sanitizer stands were placed in all the elevators. I have never seen that before. Of course, any crew member you ask has been given the instructions to reply "not as many pax are sick as last week, is not as bad as was last week" SO, take it with a grain of salt.

We have gratefully survived with week with no effects of whatever is going round.

The ship has been pretty empty most places. Not as many crowds in places as you would normally expect. You can even find loungers by the pool. :-D

So, high-five to NCL for keeping us as safe as possible - even if it takes longer to go to buffet...you know it's clean dishes and no other pax playing with the food in the buffet!

I'll write a review shortly after we arrive home and will check here to answer any questions...but probably not until we return.

We have seen that on multiple times, even without an active outbreak (fortunately there hasn't been one on any of our cruises).

We were on last week and the ship was not crowded in the obvious places before the Noro hit. I think it is just a quiet time. Although we had many people sick (we were not) there were so many who did not go to the doctor, I am not sure what people are thinking when they refuse to admit it and just keep spreading it. Kudos to Jenny probably one of the best Hotel Directors at NCL. As for the hand sanitizers in the elevators they used to have them all the time until they realized they were leaking when people backed up in crowded elevators so they took them out.

When we have traveled on the GEm and the Jewel -- there always was the washy, washy person at the entrance to the buffet and often hand sanitizers near the MDR.

On the Breakaway I miss the washy, washy guy. It is set up so that you have sinks and or hand sanitizers to use when you enter.

Glad to hear you did not come down sick.

Thanks for the info...we're heading on when you disembark on the 4th. I'm a bit of a germophobe so my hands will likely be dry and ravaged from all the cleansing. Note to self: Pack lotion and sanitizer. :D

Glad you didn't come down ill...

Glad to hear you are not sick, I was on last week and there were a few sick in our group, luckily I wasn't one of them. It was crazy after the outbreak, the buffet in the morning all was normal and at lunch everything was gone from the tables.

Gold Bond has a great sanitizer/lotion combo! It's in the lotion section at Walmart, and I don't cruise without it.

My DD is crew on the Gem, and she said it hasn't been as bad for this current cruise as it was the previous week as far as ill pax and crew. She's part of the entertainment staff, and said they're not allowed into guest areas to eat (a staff perk) until the ship is well again. She and her team escaped the virus.

Just because noro may be present, that doesn't mean you'll get it.

We were on a cruise last year and there was a noro outbreak--we did not know this until we read about it after returning home. No one in our group got sick.

We are avid hand washers. I love the sinks on the Breakaway--better than the hand sanitizing stuff.

Thanks for the tip about the sanitizer/lotion combo! I do have some of those small bottles from Bath and Body that smell SO great and they feel like they may be enriched with something moisturizing...I'll just pack those; but definitely will look for the Gold Bond next time I'm in the store. :D

This is the gist of it...wash, wash, wash. I'm constantly washing my hands, disinfecting door knobs and light switches etc...I may even pack my can of lysol if I can get away with bringing it. lol

I guess people just worry (I know I do), because you spend so much time and money toward what is hopefully going to be a wonderful vacation...the thought of getting sick well, makes me feel sick. :o

It's not just Noro, keep in mind that it's been a colder November than usual for much of the country & the seasonal flu activities have been picking up the paces and spreading it, indiscriminately ...

Remember the Avian Flu days (a/k/a bird flu) a few years ago ...

Washy Washy, Happy Happy - oh dear, did we miss them at the entrances this September on the Splendor@CCL ...

Actually, I don't think what I had was Noro, but I had picked up something.

I am always very, very careful about touching anything and my hands are dry from so much washing.

The last sea day, we went to Cagney's for breakfast and I wasn't really that hungry. I woke up with a headache (very unusual for me). After breakfast, we went out to the deck above the pool - and I got the chills. I decided to go back to cabin for a rest to see if I would feel better.

I ended up losing the entire last day of the cruise. :(

I ended up sleeping 20 out of the next 24 hours. I wasn't nauseous, vomiting or runs...just headache, total body aches and switching between being cold & hot - I'm sure I had a fever. I woke up in NY and felt much better - just tired/drained. How on earth I could be tired after sleeping so much, I have no idea!

My DH jokes that I was just leaving all the last day cruise stuff to him - (packing, bill checking, tipping, cashing in casino vouchers, etc.) and that I was just exhausted from the previous 8 days of non-stop relaxing!! LOL

I will work on a mini review later today - then a full review in the next few days with photos.

not sure why this was only posted on the St. Maarten boards it is very infomative

Think it was posted there as it is a warning for the disease found there. Luckily, we are fine - we were there a few weeks ago.
