sully108 Posted December 28, 2013 #1 Share Posted December 28, 2013 Question - is there (much) more entertainment on a Caribbean cruise (in Aug) than we experienced in Europe this past July. Specifically asking about Princess Cruises. Hi all. We cruised for the first time on Princess (The Royal Princess) in Europe in July. It was an amazing experience. We loved the ship, loved the crew, loved the food, loved the wine. Almost everything was awesome. The only negative >> there was next to ZERO entertainment for the under 50 crowd. We were all hard pressed to find enough to do in the evenings. 10 adults in our group and the only complaint anyone had was the lack of entertainment. We chalked it up to the port intensive itinerary. But we are ready to book again, but 6 of the 10 of us have balked at doing another Princess cruise because of the lack of entertainment. There are 6 adults who want to go to RCI (Allure). There are a few who would prefer to go back to Princess based solely on the food and the wine choices. Opinions ?? canadarocks Posted December 28, 2013 #2 Share Posted December 28, 2013 I'll be interested in reading the responses as well. We're doing our very first Princess cruise in March, and one of my main reasons for switching from Holland America was the lack of entertainment onboard. Hopefully Princess will be different? eandj Posted December 28, 2013 #3 Share Posted December 28, 2013 We have found good entertainment around the ship in the Carib. More than offered on our Princess Norway cruise this summer. ( for sure more offerings than HAL tho) Really just depends on what you're looking for. And how late. Carib itineraries have people staying up later in our opinion. So the music spots will be livelier later. But only by cruising Royal Carib did we find more comedians and/or variety acts. And of course the movies will be playing in the evenings which draw lots on those warm nights.
skynight Posted December 28, 2013 #4 Share Posted December 28, 2013 Question - is there (much) more entertainment on a Caribbean cruise (in Aug) than we experienced in Europe this past July. Specifically asking about Princess Cruises. There are 6 adults who want to go to RCI (Allure). There are a few who would prefer to go back to Princess based solely on the food and the wine choices. Opinions ?? Assume you are talking about the Caribbean Princess. There are no rock walls, surf riders, skating rinks, central park, etc. on Princess. While the demographic on Princess is generally older I would expect a younger crowd in the summer months. Old folks generally cruise when school is in session. Caribbean activities are different than Europe ones. In daytime on sea days Princess will generally have some pool games. They also have pool volley ball, pool golf and silly poolside games like battle of the sexes a drink mixing contest that the women always seem to win. If you join this activity use a heavy pour as you get to drink what you prepare. They might also run the sexy legs contest (men only). A lot depends on the Cruise Director. Princess also runs a Pop Choir if you like to sing and lots of trivia games. The Caribbean Princess has the Princess Theater for production shows and guest entertainers. In addition they have 5 other lounges. Explorer's Lounge may have comics, musical entertainers, games shows things like that. Club Fusion has karaoke, live rock bands, theme nights. The Wheelhouse Bar will have softer live music for sitting around, drinking and ballroom dancing. Crooner's has the Piano Man starting at 9PM and is very popular. Skywalker's Night Club opens around 9:30pm and has the DJ. There is lots going on. Most venues slow down around midnight/1am, except Skywalkers which stays open late if there are people there. Princess runs their Ultimate Deck Party one evening and they also run Movies Under the Stars on deck other nights. Do what you want on Princess, no show reservations just walk in. fielddreamer Posted December 29, 2013 #5 Share Posted December 29, 2013 (edited) We just got off Royal this past week and this was my third with Princess. I am 66 years old but we also like a little action at night . I found it to be a little quiet again on this cruise . My thoughts border your thoughts from your cruise. I also found the days around the pool to be very lay back. They had one activity around the pool on tues and one on sat. and that was about it. The theme night was a joke and does not even come close to other cruise lines we have been on. I loved the ship, food, and service and also the shows but they need to get with the program on all around entertainment for all ages. I want to book another cruise with princess but this topic seems to be holding us bac! Edited December 29, 2013 by fielddreamer
whataboutport Posted December 29, 2013 #6 Share Posted December 29, 2013 What type of entertainment are you looking for? It's true there is a lot more to do on Allure, but it's almost twice the size. The Quest show was hilarious and they used the ice skating rink bc of how popular it is. But Princess also has lots of entertainment, but not really late into the night. One complaint I have read over and over again with Princess is the production shows are too short, only about 30 mins, and you have to queue up 30 mins prior for a good seat. One of the drawbacks of not having reservations for a particular time. Things I miss most that Princess doesn't do is belly flop contest and Flowrider. But I like the clientele of Princess better, so now I have been looking at more Princess sailings.

The ship was really dead after 11P.M. every night , even the casino !
The Big Booper Posted December 29, 2013 #8 Share Posted December 29, 2013 Assuming that the OP was looking for info on entertainment such as music acts, Allure is geared towards the under 50 crowd much more so then Princess. Because the ship is so well designed it is possible to have 6 or 7 musical acts going on at once in different parts of the ship so you can easily zero in on what you want to go to. And nothing compares to the Broadway production of "Chicago" except for "Hairspray" on Oasis.:) Not to mention the other main theater production of Blue Planet, using the Broadway cast and the Olympic caliber aerialists and gymnasts. Or the great ice skating show "Ice Games". Or the Aquatheater water spectacular. Or the Promenade parades and 70's night in the Promenade with up to 1,000 people well spread out dancing the night away. We are in our late 60's and have a fine time so I guess your party would also. It has the best entertainment at sea, a multitude of restaurants, and the ship is beautiful. It blew us away. For the Caribbean, entertainment, great pool area, and options on deck are very important.
caribill Posted December 29, 2013 #13 Share Posted December 29, 2013 What would be the difference in under 50 entertainment? Music later than the 70s
Rare PescadoAmarillo Posted December 29, 2013 #14 Share Posted December 29, 2013 If entertainment was the key criterion, I would strongly recommend the Allure. I thought the entertainment on the Royal Princess was better than on most Princess ships, but the Allure's was far and away better. Hugely better. The 70s night parties on the Allure are on the level of Mardi Gras and have forever ruined them for me on Princess.

So far the majority want to go with The Allure - think Princess has lost at least 5 cabins based solely on their lack of entertainment for the under 50 crowd.
