Rome Port Change

Has Celebrity's port in Rome been changed - if so to where. Is it a longer distance to get into the City of Rome?

The port for Rome has always been Civitavecchia, which is about an hour and a half from the city, which is inland. it's quite a large, bustling port area. What makes you think there has been a change?

We would add that Civitavecchia is among the best cruise ports in Europe. They run frequent free shuttle buses (very nice buses) between all the cruise ships and the loading area right near the main port entrance. It only takes about 10 min to walk from that main Port entrance to the train station, and the city of Civitavecchia has continued to evolve into a very nice small city with an attractive promenade along the sea (which starts right outside the main port entrance).

 

One other nice feature of this port (lacking in Livorno) is that they have actually marked internal port walkways so that passengers can walk from their pier to the port entrance (this can be a very long walk depending on docking position).

To both replies I would only add, as there seems to be some confusion on the OP's part, that Rome is not on the coast, just as London and Paris are not on the coast. Luckily Rome is easily accessible via train in about an hour from the port.

For transportation from Rome airports or hotels to the port, I highly recommend Rome Cabs. Best service possible and prices when divided by 6 - 8 passengers is far less that what the cruse ships charge. All in a Mercedes van with comfort and portal to portal service. I have used them a number of times and they were on time and courteous and helpful with luggage. Stephano the owner, will bend over backwards for you.

Agree with everything you said Hank and I would also add that Civitavecchia is a nice little town in its own right for those who don't want to make the long trek to Rome. It has a few interesting buildings, a nice promenade (now they've finally finished the building work), a great local market and is only one stop on the train to a really nice beach at Santa Marinella.

Perhaps the confusion is in regards to Celebrity's decision to move some ships from docking at Naples, instead on some cruises the ship docks nearer Sorrento.

 

But yes, to the OP, Celebrity's port in Rome (or the one closest to Rome) has not changed. I find it a bit of a pain to get to but that's the price you pay for cruising into and out of Rome.

Civitavecchia is actually only about 40 miles away from Rome and the Italian shuttle driver we had did that in less than half that time despite being in fairly heavy traffic as all vehicles were moving very quickly on that route when we did our transfer. Maybe in rush hour or if an accident hindered traffic it would take that much time.

Also FCO or da Vinci International Airport is on the coast and is even closer to the port than Rome is.

Are you not perhaps thinking of Venice, where there is action this year to move larger ships from sailing down Giudecca canal (past St. Marks) and porting at the Marittima dock to a more industrial port that is farther away?

 

I have not heard ANY talk about moving ships to a different port for Rome. What source is listed for this info?? :confused:

Actually the ship docks at Salerno, not Sorrento, which is a much nicer port than Naples. And as for docking nearer Sorrento, Sorrento is actually closer to Naples than Salerno is.

 

With regard to the OP, I can't see how they can possible change the port to elsewhere if Rome is on the itinerary.

Or maybe it's the "Florence" stop. Most often it's at Livorno, last November we stopped instead at la spezia.
