"Live" (its my plan) from Independence of the Seas February 9th 2014

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am enjoying your review:D

I'm wondering if you can comment on the disembarkation process.

It says ship arrives at 5;30 am. Do you know the earliest they let you off the ship if you carry your own luggage. And is there taxi's readily available.

I would like to make a 10:10 flight from FLL.

Thanks

Kerri

You can walk off with your own luggage between 6:15 and 7:00. You would have no trouble making a 10:10 flight. We left our stateroom heading to the gangway this morning at 6:30 and were sitting in FLL by 7:30. Don't get to this airport too early though. Won't check luggage more than 4 hours in advance, and won't let us through security more than two hours early. Not sure if that is standard, or just today. As such, we are sitting and waiting!

Not looking forward to heading home to snow after this wonderful past week.

Dan.

I have to say that FLL is probably my least favorite airport. To be open, we have only flown out on the day a cruise has returned. I'm sure it would seem better on a non turnaround day. I don't airports that don't have connecting terminals and this airport does not have nearly enough seating for the amount of passengers that use it on cruise embarkation days. There have been people sitting on the floor all over the place.

We flew out of West Palm Beach airport this past month and it was so much more relaxed. We did have to rent a car to get there, but it got us home 3 hours earlier so it was worth it for us.

So long Polar Vortex! And hello CC fans!

I have decided to post (hopefully) “Live” from Independence of the Seas this week! (If RCI wi-fi and photobucket cooperate!) We will be on the 6 night Western Caribbean sailing, with stops in Falmouth, Grand Cayman and Labadee .

I have posted a few reviews before—my last on Allure was my first “live” report, and I actually found it more fun to post during the cruise as I was enjoying it, then coming home and doing a recap upon my return. Nothing like returning to sub zero temps, snow, and work and then trying to be jubilant in my reporting effort. Guessing my cruise euphoria will be a distant memory by then….:(

My review will be following on the heels of an awesome photo and trip report by Darth Grady, so I have some big footsteps to fill! Hopefully I will be able to share a thing or two that Grady may not have covered….a disclaimer offered up right now that my photos won’t be near as amazing as the ones I saw on that thread! I enjoy reviews of all kinds (“live”, short, long, photo heavy) and appreciate the effort that goes into them. Nothing like a good review to pass the time until my next cruise! Sailing “virtually” with other cruise critic posters is the next best thing!

To say I was looking forward to this cruise would be an understatement. Our weather here in the Midwest has been, well….horrible. Sub zero temps, followed by snow, and then the cycle repeats. Over, and over, and over….It’s like the movie Ground Hog Day….incidentally, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow—SURPRISE! so 6 more weeks of this upon our return…..joy of joys…..

So, a bit about us….(me) Chris, traveling with DH, and my 2 brother in laws and sister in law on this cruise. We are all in our 50’s. I have 15 cruises on RCI, and following this cruise, I shall be just one measly point away from Diamond Plus. Yep, 174 points….I think I shall note on my comment card a suggestion to allow the process of “gifting” of cruise points. Surely there is a D+ or Pinnacle member out there that would be willing to “spare a square” (you have to be a Seinfeld Fan to understand)

PLEASE? ….just one cruise point to take me over the top? ;)

Weather permitting and fingers crossed, we shall leave tomorrow from Chicago O’Hare airport at the crack of dawn for this cruise. Despite the fact that I have many cruises on RCI, each sailing always brings a new experience. New ports, new ships, new adventures…

So, here is what’s new this time….

• This will be my first time on Independence of the Seas .

• We have reserved an over the water cabana rental on Labadee. I am excited about this—it has been 10 years since my last visit to Labadee. If my memory serves me—there wasn’t much there back then. A few huts serving food and drinks and some picnic tables.

• This will be my first cruise following the new “smoking” policy……mehhhhhh, yes, as a smoker, I am not rejoicing like the rest of the non-smokers out there, but hey—I completely understand the logic behind the policy, so I will comply….I am a rule follower, so I won’t be sneaking any puffs on my balcony, and I shall restrict my smoking to the designated areas. I had planned to quit with the aid of the e-cig prior to this cruise. However, since I shall be banished to the smoking areas with those smoking the “real” thing, I decided to delay my smoking cessation plan until immediately after this cruise.

• And finally, another first…..I am sailing with Elvis……yep, the “King” of rock and roll…..we are on the Elvis Tribute “Love Me Tender” sailing…..so in addition to many photos of the ship, my report may include Elvis sightings….so, until tomorrow folks, when I will be posting live (hopefully) from the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina Hotel!

Any questions, fire away. I’ll do my best to accommodate!

looking forward to this.

Hey, Dan! It was great meeting you guys! Safe travels home! Our flight is not until 1:20. Our timeline this morning was as follows:

- walked out on deck 4 at 9:15

- collected bags and thru customs by 9:45

- from entry into taxi line until arrival at FLL, another 30 minutes.

Waited outside for about a half hour, went thru security, now sitting at the gate.

Not looking forward to returning the the great white north!

Thanks to niksmom for the nice reports, photos, and insights on this great cruise.

We'll use a few of the tidbits on the same cruise coming up in 36 days. WOO HOO!

As a side note...we have every intention of relaxing on this cruise. That also means we're going to take our time getting off the ship, NOT schlep all our bags off in the early hours of the morning, and NOT be in a big hurry to the airport immediately after such a relaxing experience.

We'll likely disembark about 10-10:30am, wait for our luggage, hop somewhere for a relaxing brunch, and then mosey on over to the airport for an afternoon flight. All the rush-rush immediately after such a nice cruise would seem to take away from the overall experience and calming value.

It's understandable that some folks can't do this based on the distance they need to fly home...but if they have the time...it might be worth considering easing the way back into civilization rather that sprint back into the hectic world. In our case...this approach has made cruising even more enjoyable. :)

Having sailed on OASIS before....yes...there are some differences.

Still, INDY is a nice large ship with plenty to offer.

- You won't have the AquaTheater on the back like Oasis or Allure.

- You won't have the open Central Park area or Boardwalk areas or inside balconies near each.

- You won't have access to the Zipline.

- You won't have a few other lesser things.

- You will have the next largest RCI ship with this Freedom Class vessel.

- You will have a similar large Promenade area.

- You will availability of numerous places to eat in addition to the MDR.

- You will have access to 1 Flowrider (as opposed to 2 on Oasis/Allure).

- You will have access to many other similar common features.

We're looking forward to sailing INDY next month.

Excellent comparison. One topic I will add to that is the fitness center facilities on Adventure class and Freedom class ships are better than those on Oasis/Allure. They seem more spacious and have a better view and location on ship, with larger locker rooms that have free saunas/steam rooms. Oasis and Allure only have sauna/steam available if you pay to use the thermal suite, and the locker rooms are cramped.

We are sailing the end of March on the Indy. I WISH we could have a leisurely disembarkation, but we have a 10 hour drive ahead of us and the kids have to go back to school the next day!
Looked at flying, but tickets are over $500 per person. Not adding another 2000+ to this vacation! We will just suck it up and hit the ground running that day.

Well, it's been a long day, but we have arrived safely back in Chicago, a.k.a. polar Vortex Land. I will now post the myriad of photos that were sucking the life out of my wifi package that now, safely at home, are uploading in seconds on my wifi!

In short, it was a "Lovely Cruise"! I'll wrap up with some final thoughts and comments, but until then, the photos will do the talking....I'll also try and backtrack for any questions!

Thank you for the pictures. So anxious for this cruise!

Where is that outside seating area? I don't know if we'll use the D lounge, either, but it's our first cruise with a dedicated D lounge.

Looking forward to more -- but please don't feel you have to hurry. Relax and get back into the real world. Hope you have a new cruise booked! It helps take away the sting. ;)

Ok, I'm only going to make an observation in this review regarding the new smoking policy. Let's just say that if 10% of this ship is people who smoke and you cram them into one area this is the result....

Barely walking room, single file, only....

Nope. Smoking was only allowed on deck 11, port side. deck 4, port side, the casino, and cigar bar, deck 5. On debarkation day, no smoking on deck 4, they were cleaning deck 11, so no smoking there, so the only place to smoke was the casino....
