In lieu of fanny packs, what do you use?

Recommended Posts

I make a lot of my cruise clothes. Each thing that I make has a fanny bag that iI also make to go with it. I use to dislike fanny bags until I made mine. The bag clips around my waist. The skirt behind it I made too.

Thank you. I use the bag when on ship. It lays pretty flat. Has enought room for what I need, room card etc. It is not a true fanny pack, but my hands are free and no room card hanging around my neck.

I got a smaller bag for my last cruise it's called a hipzbag. You can wear it several ways and it's smaller. I was able to fit a small camera, my sign n sail card and some cash with me .

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

After reading this, I Googled Hipzbag...love them. I ordered one in black for my cruise in December. I will probably get a couple more in different colors or the animal print. Thanks for the heads up about the bag!!

Hipper version of the fanny pack popularized in the 1980's. It's smaller, rides on your hip (attached to your belt loops with swivel hooks. Or it connects with a thin, waist strap that matches the bag itself) and features a zippered compartment in the front to carry money, keys, etc. while your cell phone slips perfectly into the open pocket in the back.

I just went on-line and found out that my new Sherpani bag falls into their "Element" category of bags. Also, judging from the prices I'm seeing on the internet for these bags...I got an incredible deal at TJ Maxx!:D Even more happy now. I also found a Sherpani "sale" site and think I'm going to send away for a small cross-body wallet that matches my new duffle bag and that will fit inside of it! So excited! :D I always love the tips I get from CC!

Thank you for sharing the Sherpani bag - I just saw the cutest one on Amazon - Sherpani Petal - can't wait to hit my TJMaxx, Ross etc and try to find one.

In dubious places in Europe or Jamaica etc, thieves target cross body bags by slicing through the straps, grabbing and tossing to accomplice who runs off.

Maybe we could caribiner bag to belt? .... and get towed off too:(

I think you are over thinking this. Keep your ID, cash except a few small bills and coins, and credit card in a money belt under your clothing, and it's no big deal if they steal your bag with your bottle of water, Advil, sunblock, small umbrella, map, and whatever other stuff you might have in it. That said, you are far more likely to be pickpocketed than have someone slash and grab your bag.

I sure hope you find one. I've only ever seen the one I bought at TJ Maxx. I've been back several times and have not found even 1. Haven't seen them at Marshall's or Ross. Sure hope you have better luck than me!:D

The Sherpanis are addictive and I also learned of them on CC (thank you, I think although my budget may not!)! I lucked across some smaller ones that matched my larger tote and bag that fits over handles of roller bag a few weeks ago at TJMaxx, too. They must have bought a bunch from somewhere.

I blame REI. I first saw the Sherpanis there. I always looked, but didn't "touch." THEN, REI had the nerve to tempt me further by putting a few on sale. Bad move. I couldn't help myself. My Sherpani addiction was started. I started posting about them here on CC. Now, I look for them on all those discount sites, and because someone mentioned it here, eBay…

I'm sorry I got so many people involved with Sherpani. Maybe, someday, there will be a cure;)

Just got my co-op check from REI. Haven't decided what it will be spent on.

That is why we have Pacsafe products. The straps and bottoms are slashproof. I wear this bag from the time I leave home until I am on the ship and also for all the ports. It can hold my iPad, iPhone, umbrella, bag of liquids for security etc. http://pacsafe.com/www/index.php?_room=3&_action=detail&id=206

DH also ordered a Pacsafe camera strap (slashproof) for his DSL(?) camera.

On the ship I have a small Guess cross body for everyday and a clutch for Formal Night.

So what happens if, as is sometimes reported, you are targeted by a thug on a scooter who swoops past and grabs your bag? You are dragged behind and can be seriously injured.

Read here, for example -- not just the first post but the subsequent ones, especially #22:

I'm not a big fan of these Pacsafe products and think that while they solve some problems, they create others through a sense of false security.

If I were worried about security, I would always, always, always put my valuables somewhere hidden, such as a money belt, pouch, or secret interior pocket. Yes, I'd still have a bag, but if someone grabs it I would let go and be happy that the thieves only got my sunglasses, travel notes, bottle of water, etc.

I love pacsafe stuff for travel. I believe that many of their products make it more difficult for thieves. I didn't say foolproof only more difficult.

When in public I cannot carry everything in a money belt so I rely on spreading around my things of most risk. I carry in my front pocket a pacsafe wallet. This wallet is on a chain and this is my public show wallet. I like this wallet because not only does it make it more difficult to steal but it also because it is tethered to my belt it makes it less likely to lose by accident as well. I carry one credit card and only enough money for the day in it. I also carry a hidden wallet with a spare credit card and some emergency cash. I usually carry this in a concealed pocket of my Tilley Endurable pants but at times in a money belt. I don't show this one in public. Tilley Endurable pants and shorts both have this secret pocket and I love them. I also have a third place for money and copies of important documents.

I also carry a pacsafe Metrosafe 250 Gii bag. The best feature I like about them is not so much for the slash resistance feature but because how the zippers are secured that takes an effort to get them unzipped. The strap also has a locking mechanism that allows you to attach it to your chair or table leg when at a restaurant. This bag is big enough to carry my camera and I choose to take my tablet, it as well as well as my water bottle, umbrella, and small purchases.

Nothing is foolproof, not even your money belts. I just try to be as best prepared if I fall victim to a crime.

I use the under seat basket of my walker and another pouch that goes around the handle bars. On my body for formal night I have a small shoulder purse with Velcro closure to avoid demagnitizing my card and casino cash. Casual lanyard for key card. I won a convertible wallet bag on Royal Caribbean for cash and cards on my newest cruise.

An American friend of mine who lived for a while in Italy used to carry her wallet, etc., in a plastic grocery bag -- thieves never bothered her, perhaps because they never imagined she was using the bag as a purse, and I suppose they didn't feel the need to grab a bag of what they assumed was asparagus...

I've actually heard this same advice from an Italian friend (when I told her that I was going to be spending some time in Naples.....)

I didn't try it. (I also didn't get pickpocketed nor was my bag slashed or grabbed.) I'm always very cautious with where my valuables go, however....having been pickpocketed in Barcelona a number of years ago.

Instead of spending extra money on a Pacsafe bag to get the locking feature, spend about a few bucks on a carabiner and put in on your zipper pull and you can attach it to the ring or strap of your bag… I've been doing this since I started traveling to Europe back in the 80s… There are some carabiners now made into cute designs and colors, so you can match your bag/mood. Depending on where I'm going, I use a combination of either the locking ones (has a thumbscrew) or just the clip ones. Many are sold as keychains. I use the split-ring of the keychain ones on my luggage to keep the zipper pulls together when I travel (also helps cut down on TSA thieves)...

It's okay Slider Girl, I'm loving my Sherpani addiction! LOL!:D

Seagoing Mom,

OMG, I've actually done this before! Not in Europe, but in New York. I had taken a purse that had an open top that you can't close. When I got to New York I felt so uncomfortable with all the people so close around me on the street that I put my purse inside of a plastic grocery bag! I very quickly bought myself a new purse...but for almost the whole day, I was walking around with this stupid grocery bag! LOL! :D

In Europe, I have always carried a cross-body bag and never had a problem. However...because most of our European trips were in the fall...I always also wore a lightweight denim jacket. It had an inside pocket (not really a pocket-pocket but was a pocket that was formed by the way the inside was made). I would put my money and ID in that inside pocket. So, if someone had tried to steal my bag and succeeded, all they'd get would be some lip gloss, hair comb, mints, and a pen and small notebook! Anything of value would be in my secret, inside jacket pocket! LOL!
