Yes, that's why there's so much feeling against the mega-ships sailing that particular route into/out of Venice. Enjoy it while you can. It may not last too much longer.

I think if I lived there I would still think it was amazing. But how else would they get to where they need to dock? DH and are hoping to one day do a cruise out or into Venice....

Right now on the bridge cam you can see the "Zattere," literally translated as "rafts," to the right. There are several caffes there. If I were in Venice and wanted to see the Regal, that's where I'd be hanging out, sipping a cappuccino.

The Stazione Marittima is now in plain sight.

 

They have poured a lot of money into the port and the People Mover over to Piazzale Roma. It seems such a shame that all of that development will be curtailed. Smaller ships will still be able to tie up there.

 

It reminds me of Bermuda. Nobody gets to go to Hamilton anymore. (In that case, the ships were too big to fit into Hamilton harbor.)

I sailed from Venice last October on the Royal while listening to Andrea Bocelli & drinking some Toscana vino...doing the same thing now but not quite the same. :p

If you look back at post #801, there is a possible route "below" Giudecca Island. I believe the current plan is to dredge a channel there. Another possibility is to the south of Lido. You can see that path on the post #803
