Tell me about WATER!

The tap water is perfectly safe to drink.

I've been drinking tap water on cruise ships for 52 years and am still alive to post about it. :D

I am going to start with the ship water is safe.

However, this argument is not valid. You are a survivor looking back and that one data point does not say how many people died from some effect in the same time you survived through. I am 50 and have never been harmed in a traffic accident. Nobody would see driving as fully safe just because I am still alive.

Now, I shall get off my abuse of grammar and statistics soap box.

great Caesar's ghost! the things people on low end cruise lines like Princess worry about and talk about! water? really?

and lugging aboard bottled water or soda pop to save a buck or two....or buying a freaking coffee card or soda card! this is cruising? i think not.

And I earn my money the hard way. I do worry about saving a coin here and there and still have fun on my vacation. I am happy you have more money to toss about. I also like polite and informative conversation. [cough]

Since Princess is clearly too "low end" for you, why are you on the Princess Boards? Some of us work for a living and have to save to cruise so we like to be frugal. Good for you that you don't have to do that but I'm pretty sure you are in the minority!

Op, we boarded a cruise from Barcelona and found that the cruise terminal has some shops that sell bottled water, including packs of larger bottles (2 liters?) with carry handles. You walk by these places as you are boarding, so it was easy to pick up the bottled water. I need to point out the last time we embarked in Barcelona was 2004, so things may have changed.

Flying shoes,

Just happened upon your post. Not sure why you felt compelled to make a comment, when all you did was to insult. Like many here, I work very hard at a job I love but have to save for any vacation I take, cruises or otherwise. I'm happy that you live a lifestyle which allows you to not worry about money, but don't insult or belittle the choices that those of us who do have watch our dollars make.

The water is not bad. We drink a minimum of 8 glasses a day. We flew with a case of water on the last 3 cruises and brought it on board. We check it as we don't pay baggage fees on United. If that's not an option buy local water before you get on the ship. Princess lets you bring it onboard, it will save you some $$ as the princess water in bottles can be pricy. Have a great cruise.

A couple of different questions. As others have said, the tap water on Princess ships is usually excellent and meets or exceeds standards of any bottled water. But, if you are insistent on drinking bottled water it is available for purchase on the ship. As to Europe, you are going to find bottled water (chilled) for sale nearly everywhere. European commonly do use bottled water, there are many brands, and they are less expensive then the prices sold on ships. And while we are on the subject, in Europe you will generally find that water is sold "with gas" and "without gas." The without stuff is just plain bottled water. But the gas water is similar to waters like Pellegino and absolutely delicious.

Also keep in mind that most venders expect you to pay for items (like water) with local currency. US dollars are no longer very popular in most places (and often refused). So when you arrive in Barcelona one of your first tasks should be to get some Euros at an ATM (much better deal then exchanging at a kiosk). There are plenty of ATMs right in the airport and you will find multiple bank ATMs on just about every block in Barcelona.

If you do plan on using ATMs, it is wise to notify your issuing bank of your upcoming trip and itinerary (a good rule for credit cards too). You should also know your 4 digit PIN in numbers (no letters on most European ATMs). If you have a 6 digit PIN it will be hit or miss as to whether it works (you might have to try different ATMs).

Thanks to everyone - great feed back from everyone - excluding the TROLLS! hahah, they are everywhere I guess. Must be making a decent living under the bridges to be cruise snobbish.

Good stuff about the gas/no gas.

Having just gone through a year of surgeries/chemo/radiation and food poisoning during chemo that put me in the hospital, I was told to be extra careful about water overseas and on cruise ships. I am aware that some bottled water is just tap water, here and abroad - and I will probably put my personal brita to good use. I double filter at home :)

Good additions about notifying my bank/cc too.

Thanks again.

in fact i just did a cruise on Princess in February to test the product. i thought the product was pretty good in many areas, superior in others, and down right awful in a few limited areas that could be corrected if Princess management would elevate their demographic sights. and sorry but i don't think carrying everything but the family goat aboard is the mark of a cruise, but rather the demographics of a cattle boat crossing. Carnival fills that niche. check the other cruise line boards, they don't obsess about carrying on anything.

you will all be happy to know that i won't return to Princess but you might also want to know that better lines are not much more expensive when you factor in the beverage, tips, etc. costs.

and giving the devil its due, the food was good, the embark/debark processes world class, the decor well maintained, our mini was great except the open balcony, the bars were great and under used probably because of the cost/demographic. on the other hand the specialty restaurants were over priced and mediocre, the entertainment was abundant but low quality, and the drink and wine prices much too high. loved the international cafe and wheelhouse bar. hated the casino because of the smoking policy.

enjoy your future cruises, on whatever lines.

Flying shoes,
So glad your comment on the "product" is based on first hand experience. Different cruise lines appeal to different people based on a variety of factors, each as individual as people are. Princess may not be to your liking but I still can't imagine why you thought it important to insult and belittle those who do like the Princess "product" and take whatever steps they need to take to save money (even if that money seems insignificant to you!).

Princess is perfect for me. I don't drink so why would I pay higher end prices for something I'm not going to use anyway. I also don't eat in specialty restaurants. Just because we don't cruise high end doesn't mean it's not cruising. When I go out of town I take water with me, why wouldn't I take it on the ship? If that's not what you choose to do then why comment on it? It has no impact on you. You were clearly just being a snob. Enjoy your "High end" cruising, I'll stick to Princess if going high end means I have to put up snobby people! Edited by Mist_ynight

I drink the tap water. Once though on a cruise my wife was taking a shower and the water turned black and had a film to it. It was quite a site to see her covered with this muck. After about 10 minutes it cleared up and she finished her shower.
My wife will only drink bottled water so we buy a couple gallons in each port. Edited by Buck Turgidson

That's odd.. Did you report it? Something getting into the whitewater system can be a serious thing (of course, someone could have been working on a pipe just then).

I'm finding this a very useful conversation, thanks to all of the contributors. I, too, drink mostly water so this subject is very important to me.

As long as the water has no chlorine taste I'll be happy.

My current plan is to bring aboard a 6-pack of bottled water and refill these bottles daily and store them in the fridge.

Yes, I reported it. This was our first cruise, it was on the Jubilee. I assumed it was maintenance on the pipe or water tank and ran the water until it was flushed out.

If I can't bring my goat, can I at least skype with her?
We have to do video, because she can't text worth beans...
