Suggestion to NCL for Hero Cards

Here's my suggestion to NCL:

Have the crew fill out their name and position and when guests ask they can give them their Hero Card. It sure does make it easier, at least for me, on my last Star cruise as I'm not good with remembering names. I simply then only have to fill out 'my part' and I'm done!

One person did this in the Casino and it was a HUGE help for me. Something all crew members should start doing!

I think it is far easier for me to carry some HERO cards in my small purse and get their information right on the spot. You could even have them fill in their name and position for you. They have enough to do without trying to keep Hero cards on their person. JMHO

I frequently just ask a crew member if they would write their name and official crew title on a piece of paper for me (bar server, restaurant, etc). I sit down on the last day and spend a few minutes then filling out HERO cards for those I wish to recognize. But you're right.. I can't remember many names otherwise.

I've tried this in the past and found that either too many people were asking them to fill it out at the same time as I was or they were busy at the time I approached them and I felt bad bothering them.

My husband and I have gotten into the practice of jotting down the person's name and position in our iPhones. (Usually at least one of us will have an iPhone in our pockets.) Sometimes we'll add a brief memory-jogging note explaining what the individual did. We'll usually fill out and submit the card as soon as is practicable, rather than waiting until the last night of the cruise.

Where do you get the Hero cards? I like the idea of carrying a few with me

Guest Services have them.

I just really appreciated the crew member who already had her part all filled out for me. She saved me a lot of time and memory! Yes, it might have taken her some time to fill out the Hero Cards she had on her person but it showed me she cared enough to take the time as the Hero Cards were important to her.

We take pictures of their nametag. Once you tell them you're doing it to fill out a HERO card - they have no problems!

You are no longer allowed to ask crew members to fill out their names and positions. You can ask them to hand you their name tags to get the correct information. I handed a Hero Card to crew member on the Getaway's Transatlantic Cruise this past January and was informed by a Senior Hotel Staff Member that you could not do that anymore.

This is what I heard too but was afraid to actually say it for fear of the flames. Either NCL is afraid if the staff and crew fill out their names and positions, they may or may have been soliciting for Hero cards. I've always just filled out their name and position myself as they were doing whatever I thought they deserved a hero card for so there is no one else soliciting their name at the same time - they are still taking care of us. :)

One thing you can do in the DR or spec. or bar is ask the server/team to write their names & position. Generally I just get it on an order slip and then fill out the Hero card at my leisure.

Suppose they have to be careful not to look self-promotional. Having pre-filled cards on their person, to me, smacks a bit of that.

Much prefer the smile when a crew member gets a copy of a Hero card and makes a point of coming over to thank us.:)

This I didn't know. However, I actually never asked for them to fill it out. I asked them for their name because I wished to fill out a Hero Card for them. At that point, they handed me a Hero Card which I saw already had their name and position filled out for me. She didn't socialite me. I asked first.

And...I'll repeat, I really liked it that way!

Great idea, Harriet! I would have filled out so many more cards if I had remembered everyone's name ....

The purpose of the Vacation Hero program is for passengers to honor staff who go above and beyond the expected. It is not for staff to solicit comments. Under the "Hero's" program, anyone from the Captain on down can be nominated. Management does care about the cards. The cards are used as a way of seeing who should be rewarded ( day off excursion, etc.). They are also used to determine promotions, pay raises and whether or not someone will be offered another contract. They are very important, but it is still up to the passenger to decide whether or not someone should be honored.

The hero cards can mean as much to crew members, as do tips. Good comments on the hero cards can lead to promotions within the company.

We met with our butler and stewardess individually the day before our cruise ended. Both were given a card with a message of thanks and our tip. We also showed them that "Hero" cards had been prepared for them. After chatting we delivered our 'Hero" cards to the box that was outside of the theater and then headed out for a few rounds on our last night.

Doing the tips and note the day before gave us time to chat and learn more about Walter and Connie so it was much more fun and personal. The last day is just too busy to properly thank someone.

I never said anything about staff soliciting comments. But, as I said before, if I ASK one of the staff it's nice if they hand me a Hero Card already filled out for me with their name and position.

I can see why this rule has been introduced - put yourself in the manager's position. You see a load of these cards for one staff member with the same handwriting for the name and position. That could smack of 'padding the vote' to me. Much safer and fairer for all to eliminate that possibility by requiring the card to be completed in different handwriting.

I like the idea of the card being filled out if a guest asks. What I don't like is the cards being included with the daily papers. I don't know why but that is such a turn off to me. It feels like begging. I'm experienced enough on NCL that I know where to get the card. The steward should know that. ;)

I always carry a small purse or a tote with me, so I carry the Freestyle Daily, small Sudoku book, receipts, sometimes a blank Hero card, a pen or two, and usually a camera.

My first choice for writing down a crew member's name is on a blank Hero card.

My second choice is jotting down their name and position and a quick note about them on the Freestyle Daily since I keep them as souvenirs, so I'm not likely to lose it, then can use that information when I get a Hero card.

My third choice is taking a picture of their name tag, after letting them know why I want to snap a picture.

If someone's done a terrific job but I couldn't catch their name, I'll fill in what they did to catch my attraction and provide details such as day, time, location, service provided or witnessed them providing someone else, etc.

Thanks to www3traveler who said staff is no longer allowed to fill in their names. On rare occasions we've had a crewmember do that, but I always preferred to write their names myself, otherwise I might not be able to read their writing if I wanted to use their name in the details of why I thought that person deserved recognition.

Ahhh, but the card does still need to be completed. You need to write WHY this person deserved your Hero Card, your name and your stateroom.

But just because you have to complete the rest of the card doesn't mean they didn't ASK YOU to do it. While having the person's name filled in for you can be innocent, it can also be because they are soliciting hero cards. As long as you fill out your own card, they are off the hook for any wrongdoing. Why try to get them in trouble?
