A dollar or two....depending on the amount of food.

As you sure that you are sailing from Miami???

Or Ft Lauderdale?

The room service staff share in the daily "auto-tip" that is added to your onboard account.

That said, many do tip additional when there is a room service delivery.

Gratuities

During your cruise, regardless of which Princess ship you choose, you will meet staff who provide you with excellent service. Crew members often rotate to different vessels within the Princess fleet which helps to maintain our high standards on every ship. These dedicated workers reflect our philosophy that all crew on all ships are but one family who share in our success.

To simplify the tipping process for our passengers, a discretionary gratuity of $12 per person for mini-suites and suites, and $11.50 per passenger in all other staterooms per day (including children) will be automatically added to your shipboard account on a daily basis. This gratuity will be shared amongst those staff who help provide and support your cruise experience, including all waitstaff, stateroom stewards, buffet stewards, and housekeeping staff across the fleet. For your convenience, this gratuity can be pre-paid before you sail by calling 1-800 PRINCESS and referencing Special Services item number 0597. Pre-paid gratuities may be added up to 6 days prior to your departure.

A 15% gratuity is added to bar charges and dining room wine accounts. This is shared amongst the beverage staff and their support staff. We know you will find these services onboard exemplary.

Casino dealers and Lotus Spa® personnel do not share in these gratuities, as not all passengers utilize these services.

I believe what caribill says is true based on the Princess policy I copied above. However, I tip one dollar for just a carafe of coffee in the morning, and two dollars, if we get a few more breakfast items. We haven't ordered room service otherwise so I haven't thought about it. I think having someone bring coffee early in the morning deserves a little something extra. ;)

We very seldom order anything from room service but when we do we always tip $2 - $5 depending on what we ordered.

Anytime anyone other that our room steward brings us anything to our cabin, we tip.

We don't use room service often, but if we do it is usually a full dinner for the two of us. That usually ends up being three trays. We tip $5 for that. If we end up ordering something small, we tip $2-3. They're always quite appreciative.

We usually order coffee and juice to enjoy on the balcony (in clement weather) or in the cabin as a morning wake-up. And we usually tip $3.

Following our wake-up juice and coffee, we usually go to the MDR for a served breakfast.

BTW: we find that the knock on the door is most often precisely the time the service is requested.

This room service is an important part of our cruise experience.YMMV.

Is there anything finer than having your coffee or tea, along with an English muffin or roll on your balcony, early in the morning while watching the ocean go by?

If giving a tip it's best to do it in cash and not add it to the room service order card which goes to the tip pool & is shared with others.

If you keep the auto tip then they get to keep the cash; if you don't keep the auto tip then the cash goes into the tip pool or they risk being terminated. It's the same rules for any type of cash tip whether it's to your cabin steward, waiter, bartender or room service.

For the cost of a half bottle of French champagne ($32) you can make mimosas with the Ultimate Balcony Breakfast.

We always make sure to bring lots of one dollar bills which we use to tip room service delivery with. Usually 2-3 $ per delivery for breakfast, mostly when in port to get of the ship faster. Should you forget to bring enough 1 dollar bills go to the casino and get change. Happy cruising:)

On our recent cruise the casino & PSD ran short of dollar bills & drastically limited how many they'd give so try to get them early. I might bring a roll of dollar coins for our next cruise.

2.00 every morning when coffee was delivered in CASH so that person gets to keep it and not have to share with in the tip pool! They are always very appreciative! I keep the 2.00 out the nite before so it is handy when they arrive

It is included in the daily charge they automatically put on your account. I feel no need to double tip but of course you're free to do so if you want.

I don't think I would bring the dollar coins. They are not real popular and often mistaken for quarters. Especially since most will be foreigners and not familiar with the coin. Just my 2 cents, for what that's worth! :)

Before each cruise I go to the bank and stock up on small bills. Lots of ones and fives. This way I'm covered from the airport through the cruise should a tipping occasion arise. ;)

Small bills often come in handy in port when shopping and you don't want a lot of foreign change.

Typical breakfast tip, $2 cash.

Thanks for the suggestion...I've been hesitant to use them but being a gold coin they should be able tell the difference between $1 and a quarter.

I've read that some got strange looks when using a $2 bill on the ship or anywhere outside of the USA.

We recently sailed around South America and in port they're very happy to have crisp new US dollar bills.

We are leaving for the U.K. next week and reading through this has convinced me to get get a stash of ones and fives before we leave. Great idea for extra tipping onboard the ship. We always tip around $5.00-$7.00 for room service and I tip more when we order a full breakfast for our family of four. Loving the idea of having breakfast on our balcony with my husband and girls! Can't wait!!

Many in the US are not familiar with the dollar coin.

In Los Angeles we get them in the change from the Metro. Hard to spend them anywhere but Union Station. They're used to them there.

I'm American but have lived in the UK for over a decade.

I usually give room service £1-2 (in pound coins) since I can't get my hands on dollar bills now. If I run out of those and I have a few euros I'll give them instead.

Do the staff mind getting tips in non-US dollars? Do they have to exchange it to USD on the ship and therefore get ripped off? I think they to a great job and anyone who has to see me in the morning without any make-up deserves something extra.

Leaving on Emerald Princess in a week so maybe I should try and change some money into USD even though we are going to Spain/France.
