What do you not come home without?

Recommended Posts

HA! I bought 4 different bottles of tequila from a store in Mexico that i was assured could not be found in the US... fast forward a few weeks and I see all four bottles in my local liquor store.

Now that is funny! We went on an excursion in Cozumel and learned how to make different types of Margarita's and Salsa's. Ond one of the salsa's is actualy a dessert with a liquor in it. We we were told that you can only buy it in Mexico. After the excursion we picked up a couple of bottles at the port in the duty free store to take back with us. A couple of weeks after the cruise I was in our local liquor store and low and behold what did I see.... Those bottles that we could only purchase in Mexico!

Always a fridge magnet and a ceramic gecko (we have them randomly throughout the house and our friends like to see if they can spot the new one on the walls), and usually a bottle or two of booze we can't get at home (love Sheridans and BBD).

What no Tanzanite?

I mean its rare and you can only get it (the current port you're in) for such a great price! :D

We started keeping the after dinner shot glasses, but then stopped as we really had no place to put them..

We'll purchase one good picture of us that the ship took and have it framed. Ha Nice timing ^

if we are on a cruise going to the cayman islands.. we MUST bring home as many bottles of BBD rum (stands for... something I don't know if I can write) that we are allowed to bring! you can only get it there!

I googled BBD Rum. OH MY! LOL Might should not have looked that up at work. :o But will have to pick some up! :D

What are these ship models that you guys are talking about? Are they already assembled? Where did you get them and how much$?

You buy them in the logo shops onboard. This is not my photo, but they look like this. Around $30-$35, I think.

Wow... I wish I knew about those. I'd have one from the Freedom, the Monarch and the Splendour by now... and with no future cruise in sight, it would be nice to look at. I wonder if they're available for sale online for a reasonable price...

Used to collect shot glasses but after 500 I had to quit.

Used to collect t-shirts but got so many I ended up making a quilt with them.

Used to collect frig magnets but got too many.

Used to collect mugs but ran out of room to store them.

Always bring home my sea pass card for the scrapbook.

If I'm in Grand Cayman, I always get 4 bottles of Tortuga 151 Rum - it's very good and not available anywhere else.

And finally, street art. Once I'm home, I frame it and hang it on my wall in the entry hall. It's fun to go through them all when company comes over and asks about them.

I have to admit that the first thing that I thought of was dirty clothes and extra weight...but, it's photos. We always take loads of photos. We used to keep them in boxes, but now, a few weeks after we return, we do a Shutterfly book with our favorites as a keepsake. We also try to pick up a Christmas ornament. We are limited to cruising during the summer, so it's a great help in getting through the winter when we put up the tree and bring all these ornaments to remind us of what we have ahead of us when winter is over. My Grandson collects maps of where he's been and they are all framed in his room. It has survived through the years without a need to replace them. He went on his first cruise at four years old. I bought him a map in a shop we were in.

Mugs have always been my favourite. Our grandson on his first cruise with us had to buy a keychain in every port. That was ok with us because he's a low maintenance almost 8 year old! ;)

I always bring back:

1) paper currency from every country we visit

2) scarves/pashminas

3) magnets but need to stop that soon

for DH:

1) ball caps for him & friends

2) T-shirts

3) Starbuck mugs w/ country/city's logo if available

Wife.

DH would agree! Love it!

We also make up a photo book. At Adoramapix, bind the books so all pages lie flat. I've got some nice panoramas in some of my books. How do you like shutterfly?

Sea Pass card- glue a magnet on the back and use as a fridge magnet. We have 13 diff Sea Passes on our fridge now!

Post Cards- I try to mail myself a postcard from every port. When we get home we'll have a postcard, stamp and a great memory for the scrapbook.

I learned both of these tips from these boards. :D

I actually LOVE the idea of making a quilt out of all the old tshirts. I may have to start collecting shirts to have one made.

We have storms moving in and I can hear my wooden wind chimes I bought in the Bahamas ringing outside. I'm so glad I bought them and think that may be my "thing" to purchase on each trip (along with a bottle of alcohol that I can only get in that particular port, like the Ricardo Rum I bought).

So I thought this would be a fun question.... Is there anything specific you make sure to collect on every cruise or port?

I'm so happy you don't live next door to me;). Our former neighbor drove us mad with her wind chimes.

We have done the magnet thing but the fridge was getting too loaded. My DH buys a t-shirt in every single port we go to, even repeats. He buys them in airports, too. I counted them once - well over 100 t-shirts folded on his shelf in the closet. Holy cow. :D

We have a rule - for every new T-shirt, an old one goes. I'm the enforcer.:D. It has kept our collection to 20-30 each.

We try to find a small piece of local art or craft. In Hawaii, we found some blown glass pieces and get one every few years. In the Galapgaos it was a sliver/ceramic sea turtle, some ceramic serving pieces from a local artist and a blue-footed booby pendant and earring set. Other places it's a small watercolor or drawing. I like cloisonné pins from different counties and national parks, but I have a collection just sitting in a box unworn because I haven't figured out how to display them. DH beings a casino chip home from each new ship we sail on.
