New Smoking Policy ruins Cruise

Recommended Posts

To the OP: I believe you about the pervasiveness of the smoke even if there are several posters who don't. We experienced the same when we were on the Independence of the Seas out of Southampton one February. Don't ask why (and I'm hoping it was a fluke) but it seemed that every smoker in Great Britain was on that cruise with us. If you wanted to go to the Pyramid Lounge on Deck 5 you had to walk through a wall of smoke that billowed out from the outside deck every time someone opened that door. I've never experienced anything like that on any Royal Caribbean cruise before that or since that but it was an annoying enough experience that we jumped ship after that and started cruising with Celebrity. Eleven nights of being assaulted with extreme smoke was enough! And we've only come back to RCI because of the new smoking policy.

I hope you send a letter to RCI and tell them that the ventilation system needs to be overhauled/upgraded because it's clearly not doing a very good job in providing clean air for all passengers to enjoy.

Cellphones = annoying not detrimental to my health.

Smoking = detrimental to my health

There is no comparison and it's ridiculous to compare the two.

Other people's antisocial behaviour of any kind can be detrimental to another's health. Just because you can't see smoke doesn't mean its not having an affect. Look at these boards. People moaning because of screaming kids, not dressing for dinner, using iPads etc. all antisocial to another. Noise is hugely stressful. We just can't see it.

This is the first time I've commented on any smoking thread since I know how they usually turn out

However, I think it's worth making the point that since the new smoking laws were introduced the casino has become the one indoor venue where people can smoke. I have noticed that the casinos now seem more smoky and, particuarly on Allure earlier in the year, the casino was being used as a smoking venue by people who were not gambling and smoke could be smelt in the stairwells a couple of floors above. This is something I've never noticed before on a cruise.

On an Iceland cruise - which would have cooler climates - it's quite possible that more people were smoking in the casino than would have been in the past, as it's the one place they can smoke indoors and unfortunately the design of Voyager class ships would cause the problem related by the OP.

I also noticed that on our Allure cruise. Not only that but the smoke from the casino came into the MDR and during dinner the elevators also were bad. I had strong words about this in my post cruise review to them. I suggested doors in the casino to keep it inside. I NEVER stepped foot in there.. Their loss......

Smoking annoys you.

Cellphones are annoying on Vacation.

Nothing worse than being on Vacation away from the daily grind, sat near someone when eating, having to listen to someone on their phone talking business.

Leave it all behind:D Your on Vacation

From reading the posts it looks like smoking in the casino on indy out of UK was allowed prior to 2012 and is now back again for 2014,

unless there we no smokers on-board for those two cruises (unlikely)

I think this is why were disappointed with the new policy (again out of UK since it looks like it was allowed else where during 2012/13)

We had the previous two cruises smoke free inside.

Agreed with you on all of that.

Some people cannot be pleased, and will moan for the sake of moaning.

And there are those who think that the ship,is just for them, invisible to the thousands who are also on Vacation.

Agreed, I do not drink, nor do I moan about drinkers. I do not use an electronic device on a cruise, do I moan about all those who can't detach from them for a Vacation, no.

Drinking is a drug

Gambling is a drug

Smoking is a drug.

And they are all legal. why? Because they generate $$$$$

They may be legal, but the ship is private property and they can limit or eliminate any or all of these things if they wish.

Smoking is different than gambling drinking or electronics in that if you do it near me then I'm doing it too. You can't smoke around me without me smoking too and I don't want to. Your electronics only involve you, so unless you keep trying to get me to look at it, I don't care. Your drinking only doesn't affect me, unless perhaps you get sick on me, so go have your drink. Casino Gambling doesn't make much sense to me, but as long as your not doing it with my money, go have fun.

These things do all generate money but they also have a cost associated with them. If the cost outweighs the benefit, then they will go away.

Funny why would you think your teacher look would have an effect on anyone, except your own ego. Smoking is allowed in the casino. :D

I thought she was giving the teacher look because the woman chose to sit right next to her and chain smoke when there were plenty of other spots available........but that is just my interpretation......could be wrong!

A great business opportunity just sprung to mind.

A cruise line with no drinking, smoking gambling and cellphones.

Also shower coupons, no formal attire and every cabin is a suite. Damn, no need for shower coupons as we would all have baths.

All restaurants up charged and no ship excursions.

I think the cruise compass would be reduced from a 4 page format to a single 1 page flyer.

Wonder if they would please the masses and stay in business very long!

If inside smoke does indeed cause those problems for your wife then you should consider your options but they'll be limited. I'm not aware of any cruise line that does not allow inside smoking. Certainly the mainstream lines allow it and with the casino being the money maker that it is, no way you'll see it banned there any time soon. It does seem some ships are worse than others. I found the Indy to be quite good in fact. Even the Casino was tolerable I found. The NCL Pearl casino was pretty bad. For the most part I've found smoking not an issue for me. They are generally very accommodating people on the ships and they pretty much follow the rules. If its something that is really affecting you I find it can be avoided for the most part but if its as bad as it is for your wife then perhaps you need to consider your options.

Celebrity does not allow any inside smoking.

Im a past smoker of 25 years that quit cold turkey 5 years ago this month. Im probably more anal about being around cigarette smoke than MOST non smokers who have never smoked before. I absolutely cannot hardly tolerate it now.

But "ruin" your cruise? Come on now. Dramatic much?

Funny thing is, I love the smell of a good pipe tobacco and the smell of most cigars.

I quit 12 years ago but like you I do enjoy the smell of a good cigar. I'll even fire one up with a scotch once or twice a year. Like Bill Clinton however, I don't inhale. :)

Oh, I thought we were on about how smoking affected an individual, either directly or indirectly, on a cruise, for a week.

If we are saying that all cruise passengers care about the smoking habits of their fellow passengers all year round, then I take your point.

On a cruise, for that week, I would feel safer standing next to a smoking addict than I would standing next to a gambling addict. For obvious reasons, if you look at it INTELLIGENTLY.

And all gambling, like smoking, starts somewhere. Look at it intelligently.

Smoking affects ALL INDIVIDUALS who practice it, and ALSO affects EVERYONE AROUND THE INDIVIDUALS. Gambling affects a very small percentage of those who practice it, and NONE of those around the GAMBLER. But if you want to keep making the absurd comparison, go for it.

As he tried to point out to you, you're incorrect. Smoking does not just "annoy" someone. Its a medically proven fact that smoking is detrimental to the physical health of non-smokers in proximity to smoke. I don't think you can find any evidence of someone else's cell phone usage being detrimental to your physical health, no matter how hard you try. Annoyance is one thing, affecting my health is a DIFFERENT thing entirely. ;)

Holy Crap!!!!... as a smoker (who has quit in the past, so i'm on both sides of the fence) with an upcoming cruise I feel I have to comment on this!!

Number 1 - This rule applies to EVERYONE!!! ....While you may have spend a small fortune to go on this vacation, in no means is the ship JUST YOURS... you have to share it with some people, people who you will probably never see again, or want to see again, but you have to SHARE IT... and you have to DEAL with them!

Number 2 - The casino is the revenue maker for the ship. Ever heard the expression on how you are donating to the cruise line by going to the casino?? It's a "golden" rule that the casinos on ships really don't pay out like land-based ones.

Number 3 - If you don't like to be around smokers in the casino - Go on Celebrity... it's apparent from the other posts here that they offer a smoke-free casino... If you don't want to gamble - Go on Disney - (no casinos) where you will have even more limited places to smoke and in general having been on one I can say Been there, Done that!

Number 4 - What was so very wrong about allowing smokers to smoke on their outside balconies?!?! Oh... I'm sorry if a small ash got on your balcony floor neighbor... I'm sure the wind will blow it away before you even realize...

Number 5 - The suggestion that someone else had about a smoker's bar is a good one... Doubtful that it will ever happen, but good suggestion.

---ready to take my beatings since I still smoke...

Personally I'd be pleased if they got rid of smoking, and I think they will eventually.

Agreed, I think they will too - as the percentage of smokers continues to drop, and as their casino revenue falls due to it being the "smokers lounge" now, I think soon it will be non-msoking. At that point smoking will be only in designated outdoor locations. Personally, I have no problem if that continues, nor do I think its a bad idea to have a (well-ventilated) cigar/smokers lounge somewhere inside.

Check facts before posting

Cellphones are detrimental to my health and yours.

Cell phones emit radiofrequency energy, a form of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation, which can be absorbed by tissues closest to where the phone is held.

The amount of radiofrequency energy a cell phone user is exposed to depends on the technology of the phone, the distance between the phone’s antenna and the user, the extent and type of use, and the user’s distance from cell phone towers.

Studies thus far have shown a consistent link between cell phone use and cancers of the brain, nerves, or other tissues of the head or neck. More research is needed because cell phone technology and how people use cell phones have been changing rapidly.

And you cannot see the radio frequencies!! To avoid them, you can see the smoke, which you can avoid.

Anyways. Let's all watch USA v Germany in a proper football game. Live on ESPN.

Guess we will be wanting football banned on ships as well.. Real football that is.

Will consult the wife to see if she wants to start her own cruise line;)

I hear you, eventually smoking will be banned. And drinking as this causes severe liver disease.

Won't have to worry about drinks packages and free coupons then.

Why can't kids go into a casino and gamble?

For me its the fact that the smoke gets into your clothes, hair etc then you take it into your cabin. I'll be avoiding the casino on AOS which is my choice but a loss for RCI

Let's see people moan about Super Mario smoking his cigars on pool deck

I have had the opportunity to sail with Mario on several occasions, and as others have said, he is very down to earth, and really enjoys life, along with his cigars! You will find Mario, if you are sailing on the ship that he is aboard in his "office" which is on the pool deck, at the smoking area.

Wonder if they stopped Mario smoking he would stay with RC.

Loyal to royal 500 cruises!!!!!!
