Smoking on your balcony is out! Gratuities are going up.

Recommended Posts

When was the last time anyone wrote a letter stating they like some policy a company had. Get real....it's the whiners in the world that have time on their hands that write in complaining about things. And out of 7 Carnival cruises, I have never been offered a survey to fill out. So again, it's some cruisers.

They only give the surveys out to non-smokers.

Looks like smokers had better start a letter writing campaign to NCL reminding them of the business they can pick up if they don't change their policy ;)

Their stock certainly went up a nice bit today :D as Carnival and Royal fell. :eek:

It's sad really...Next everyone will be whining about how smoky the Casino is and how they can't go on 1/2 the lido deck without getting smoked out LOL

Imposing their will on others, I fot one have had it up to you know where with that attitude. Cause all you are saying is that your right to smoke out weighes anyone else's right to not to have to smell the smoke. When the actions of one person invades the personal space of another, putting an end to that action is justified. And when a majority of people, which as Carnival has said is the reason for this move, then the democratic path is to follow the said majority.

No, what I am saying is my right to enjoy my vacation has equal merit to yours. Other peoples actions also intrude on my vacation but I am not sitting around writing letters to Carnival or calling security to complain about them. I live and let live.

If someone smells bad in my opinion, I walk away. If someone is annoying to me, I find another place to be. I don't try to intrude on the vacation that others paid just as much for as I.

All of the oh so righteous here act like smokers just sit on those damn balconies 24/7 and chain smoke and any reasonable person knows that is simply not the case. And in most cases, if you say to a smoker that it is bothering you, they will accommodate you and not smoke while you are out on the balcony.

No one is getting cancer from a whiff of smoke as it passes by them on the open sea. That argument would be hilarious if so many didn't seem to actually believe it. Perhaps if you were trapped in an unventilated confined space with constant exposure that could raise the risk, but even that has not been proven conclusively.

The whole "my way or the highway" mentality isn't coming from the smokers. It is coming from the other side of the coin.

Let me clarify a few things for you. First...yes, as a smoker I will give up cruising (even though I love it) because it will not be a vacation for me any longer. I spent 16 years married to a drunk and dealing with all the misery that goes with that. I HATE being around drunks. My balcony was my refuge. Spend the day on shore, have dinner and retire to my balcony with a book and a smoke before bed. Total bliss.

Secondly, I also remember when my state banned smoking in bars & restaurants. Several of our bars went under because all of the non-smokers who celebrated the smoking ban failed to show up to support the businesses. Of course we quit going so often because it's damn cold to stand outside most of the year to have a cigarette. Restaurants are a little different. Not so much time is spent there. We order, we eat, we leave, have a smoke on the way home.

Cruises are a bit different. I am trapped on a ship for a week. I can't just get in my car, go for a ride and have a smoke. That's the reason that I've always paid extra for balcony (plus the dealing with drunks part). I could retire to my balcony and I paid very well for that. How relaxing is it to have to get re-dressed and go however many decks away to the "designated smoking area" for my end of the day smoke? I'm not going to spend that much money for that kind of vacation. And you are right, we smokers have been conditioned to smoke outside. That's what we've tried to do but it isn't good enough for some of you.

I'm obligated for one last cruise with my friend in November. Here's how it's going to play out. I've traded our beautiful extended aft balcony for an inside room. I booked it as close to a "designated smoking area" as I could. I will get up in the morning and throw a bathrobe over my nightgown and trot up a deck for coffee and a smoke...IN A PUBLIC AREA. Later, when we get back on the ship, we will most likely just plant ourselves in one of the smoking areas for the remainder of the night. How does this benefit all of you non-smokers? Now, instead of outside on my private balcony, I will be forced to smoke in public areas (some of them inside). They didn't do you any favors with this either.

As for ships being completely non-smoking, do a little research on the Carnival Paradise. It was a non-smoking ship for 6 years and Carnival lost big money on it. You non-smokers didn't show up for that either.

Nice to punish your friend over a Carnival decision, and to allow a cigarette to rule your life and affect your friend's.

IMO, you should try your best to enjoy it as your last cruise.

The balcony smoking ban is here to stay. Time to move on. (Literally or figuratively - you choose)

Not so fast. It sounds like there may be a buy in coming that will still allow smoking on the balconies. It's all about the Benjamins, yanno. ;)

See, this is where smokers become illogical.

I truly think a plexiglass bubble that wraps around the balcony would be a perfect solution.

Smokers would still have their view and the luxury of having a balcony. I would think this would make smokers happy.

The non smokers want the fresh sea air, but in all the posts, not one of the smokers have mentioned going out for a breath of fresh sea air....so really, why not have glass enclosed balconies for the smokers?

Why do you suggest non smokers be enclosed when it's them who are adamant about breathing fresh air rather than the toxins smokers are breathing in??

I truly believe it's a win win for all!

It works for airports. Almost makes the people inside look like a animal in a zoo exhibit.

BRAVO CCL!! We applaud this action. Smoking is a health hazard, so thank you for considering the health of your passengers!!

As for the gratuities.....like everything else they just keep going up. Thank goodness we prepaid our gratuities for our next cruise in Jan....we are safe with the $11.50/day charge...phew!!

Paying the cleaning fee doesn't lift the ban. Just (hopefully)will get you kicked off the ship.

It's sad to me...that smoking on your balcony is more important than everything else about the cruise.....[/quote

This does appear to be the general consensus of the smokers in this thread. I'm truly baffled that smoking would take precedence over all the other great things about cruising!

No it is not illegal to smoke in public in Barbados...It is illegal to smoke in public places which are defined as:

A building, place, structure or facility that is owned, controlled, managed or occupied by the Crown or a statutory board in Barbados;

place, site, building, factory, plant, workplace or other structure that is fully or substantially enclosed;

library, museum, auditorium, historic or other site of archeological or national significance, to which the public or a member or section of the public has access or is permitted to have access, with or without restriction to users and whether or not on the payment of money; or by virtue of membership;

Also E-cigarettes do not apply to this law as they are not smoking.

Just your FYI Public Service announcement for the day

I used to smoke and I do understand why they are angry. But , I may get flamed. But the people who do smoke are angry at the wrong people. Folks on here only make up a very small portion of people who don't smoke.

It would be reversed on here if Carnival said the smoker's could smoke any where. The non smoker's would be angry at the wrong people.

Carnival for what ever their decision was based on to do this , is their decision as a company. You need to channel your voice to Carnival.

It would be interesting to see if the insurance company has something to with it. It may cost them more to insure if there are fires from smoking.

I will continue to cruise and just avoid the areas of the smokers.

Apparently not enough people defected to RCCL because their profits decreased by 2/3 when they banned smoking on balconies. This whole thing is stupid. Lets ban smoking from the outdoors...Really?

You don't give any reference for your statistic. I can give a strong counter argument: I purchased CCL and RCL stock in Dec. 2012. Since then my CCL stock has consistently lagged RCL; currently CCL is DOWN 3% and RCL is UP 56%. RCL doesn't allow smoking on any balconies of any of its ships. CCL has at least nine lines and although they had banned smoking on balconies on most of them already (and Cunard and P&O banned it earlier this year), they were the smokers' haven with Carnival, HAL and Seabourn. So tell me again how banning smoking hurts profits?

Well ok but when they tried to ban large sodas in NYC it was overturned

Only because the Mayor forced with through as executive action. The Court noted that if the City Council had voted for it, it would have been legal.

So now the non smokers will spend their vacation time "reporting" anyone they may think is smoking??? Wow! Have fun with that. Why don't you also report chair hogs, people who don't wash their hands leaving the restroom, kids who run in the buffet area, line jumpers, loud talkers, the speedo men, etc. etc. Put your sheriff's badge on and enjoy your vacation. Also, do a little research on vaping before you saddle up. You may learn something.

That's very specifically a case of RCCL having a lineup with a better product. It has nothing to do with smoking. The cruising public DOES vote with their wallets.

I don't know about tattling, but it is true, you can't smell the e-cigs. I have a friend who smokes one and it's just water vapor that comes out of them.

My apologies if this has been posted before, but I haven't caught up with the thread yet this morning. I saw this posted to another cruise related page to a certain spokesperson. It appears the email did go out yesterday, as noted by the prepaid gratuities.

I got the same letter but mine stated 250 fee to smoke on balcony.
