What is the strangest thing you have lost or found on a cruise?

On Allures last year we found ONE Nike flop in the elevator when the door opened. No people were on board.

I wouldn't call it lost, but on the last couple cruises I've been letting a $5 or $10 in an area I doubt the Stewart cleans (behind the safe). I put it in an envelope with "Hope you enjoy your trip as much as we did. Buy yourself a drink or your kid a treat."

Figure it will brightens someone's day and can't hurt for karma points.

Anybody find anything in the bible? I had heard that sometimes people leave unused vouchers etc in the bible for the next occupants of their stateroom. Don't know if that ever actually happens.

Lost: a baseball cap. It wasn't valuable, but did have sentimental attachment. Much to my pleasant surprise someone turned it in.

Found: a very nice man's ring. (The ring was nice; I don't know about the man!) I assume guest services found the man - nice or not.

As an aside, I once lost a camera bag (fortunately not the camera) at Busch Gardens. I reported it to the lost and found and the security guard said over 70 per cent of the items reported as lost are actually turned in, including my camera bag. Who'd have thought....?

On the last day as we packed, my husband put his hand up on the shelf above the TV which had a false front ledge o it. Lying on its side was a full bottle of scotch. We thought it was bought on board by earlier passengers, and they forgot to pack it. We h ad our allotment for customs, and gave it to the steward!

I haven't found any coupons, punch cards etcetc in the bible for years....come to think if it, I am not sure there are bibles anymore I the bedside drawers like in days of yor in hotels etc for you young ones,!

There was a Gideon bible in the drawer on the Summit a month ago. I never thought to look in the pages for coupons.

Lost: Worst, and most memorable loss was the diamond from my wife's engagement ring she'd worn for over 30 years. We noticed after it was gone that the tips of the prongs had worn out. Unfortunately we were not sure where on the ship it was lost. Among the places we searched was under the tables in the Martini bar and the Hotel Director (who was enjoying cocktails there as we looked) joined us in the search there. He said that if we'd known for sure which room it was lost in he'd mount an all out search for it but we had no idea exactly when or where it was lost. Later that year it was replaced with new diamond a bit larger than what my college budget could handle many years ago.

Help make it easy for found items to find you!:

There has been many times when we've seen someone find a camera or some other item while traveling with no idea who it belongs to or how to find the owner. Most people are honest but if an honest person finds your lost item they might not be able to find you or it might be very difficult taking a journey through lost and found limbo and lots of time and effort on everyone's part. I make sure all of our losable items are identified with my name and our cell phone number. I use the ID labels mentioned in post #45 by Turtles06 on cameras, computers, tablets, binoculars and similar items - they are very professional looking, neat and inexpensive. I put luggage tags with my name and cell phone number on luggage, backpacks and carry-on bags, and include a photo of a sheet of paper showing my name and cell phone number as the first photo on every memory card in our cameras. Make it easy!

I was just wondering as many of you are long time multiple cruisers or even new cruisers what is the strangest thing you have lost or found on a cruise?

On a Celebrity cruise which disembarked in San Diego, I realized as we arrived at the airport that I had left my wife's very expensive jewelry in the room safe. Fortunately, she had a good attitude - "it's all insured" but I was not so cavalier.

After arriving back at the port 15 minutes later, the nice folks from Celebrity told me "hell would freeze over before I would be allowed back onto the ship". They suggested I just give them the combination and they would have housekeeping bring the valuables to me - "this happens almost every cruise and this is what we do". I didn't think that was such a good idea.

After about 30 minutes of my most persuasive salesmanship in talking with successively higher levels of ship's officers, they finally allowed the Head of Security to escort me back to the room. We went back through the crew exit onto the ship as the crew gawked. I opened the safe, retrieved the contents, and quickly was escorted off. Several of the Celebrity shore staff told me they had never seen anyone let back on the ship after disembarkation and wanted to know how I did it. I told them I begged.

Thankfully, I made it back to the airport with plenty of time to spare. I am now more careful about checking the safe. My wife also agreed to not take so many valuables.

Just got back from a 7 day Caribbean Cruise where I was very sad to loose 1 sandal. :( Of course it was a brand new pair and somehow on our first port day I managed to loose one of them and because I changed into flip flops for the beach I didn't notice the missing shoe until back aboard the ship.

The funny part of the story. I kept trying to throw the lone show away but our room steward kept digging it out of the trash. I finally had to tell him what happened so he would throw it out.

Wasn't in the elevator was it? (See my earlier post)

I have set down Rx sunglasses and they were taken - never returned to lost and found, sadly. Also have had a pair of shorts taken from me, while in the sauna. WTH? Really? Strange behavior for sure.

Someone on one of my Roll Calls recommended these labels for putting on electronics, cameras and other items that one might accidentally leave somewhere. I ordered a set and I think they are well worth getting:

Thank you so much for this link. I have ordered these. I am totally impressed with their website. Wonder if maybe we could direct Celebrity to this site so they could learn a thing or two?

The pictures of my daughter's wedding. We were on a river cruise and I left them in the lounge. I realized hours later, but no one had any idea where they were. It was a serious disappointment and I've never gotten reprints, though my daughter said she would give them to me, but it just never happened.

  • 3 weeks later...

Not so strange but I did leave a small jewelry box in the safe. The sad thing about it was it held a pearl ring that my mom gave me before she died. It was a black pearl and a white one. My son and us were in the game room on the Caribbean Princess and he had a case with the full poker game and chips and we got up to go do something. He got about 20 feet from the room, came back for it and it was already gone and the room was empty. Somebody was sure quick.:(

I had those on my electronics when I lost a pair of Bose headphones and an ipod.

I realized it wasn't in my pocket minutes after leaving the lounge, but they were gone. Even with ID and engraved ipod they where never returned.

Lesson learned - the value of the item may be directly related to the chances of its return, even if easily identified and a reward offered. My ipod was old and not too valuable but the Bose earbuds were expensive for such items.

Lost items might be found by an honest person or a dishonest one. The ID tags won't help much if your item is found by a dishonest person. But they'll help immensely if it is found by an honest person.

It is a shame your items were not returned. The fact that they disappeared quickly and were gone when you returned minutes later was not a good sign.

We were in a lounge, and a gentleman left and came back with his wife's wrap. Something fell on his way to the seat and my husband scooped it up and handed it to the woman...suddenly realizing he was handing her a pair of lacy panties! That's one "find" we still laugh about two years later! And I never put a wrap in my underwear drawer either!

On our recent Infinity cruise we immediately went to Bistro on Five to enjoy a quiet lunch with a couple glasses of wine. Two hours later we were in our stateroom when I realized I did not have my purse that contained cash, travelers checks, passports, cell phone etc. i went back to Bistro and my purse was returned intact. They could not tell me which of the wait staff had picked it up for safe keeping. It didn't take long to realize things could have turned out much differently. Kudos to the entire Bistro staff.

Lsimon,

A name and contact info on an item just might get you that item back if it was found by a person somewhere in between honest and dishonest. Seeing a name might make it more "personal" for the mildly dishonest.

Or you could always go this route with your label:

John Doe

Cell: 555-555-5555

God is watching :)
