This Thread Is To Be Used For All Discussions About HAL's On Board Smoking Policies

I "believe" he is stating that HAL should change their on-board smoking policy.

If true, the mods should move this thread to the single permitted smoking thread. Perhaps, however, the OP is suggesting that HAL shops should carry more pink merchandise, more goods with "Cruise for a Cause" logos, etc. Until the OP explains him/herself, we'll never know!

Really? I would never have guessed that from what was posted.

I, too, have no idea what OP is trying to say, even if I figure there was a typo of "shops" where OP meant "ships". Haven't a clue what this is all about.

OP---why not make a declarative statement of what you are attempting to say?

Holland America's "On Deck for a Cause" raised 4.3 million for cancer support. A worthy endeavor. HAL now need to bring their policies and shops in line with their charity promotions. Perhaps a policy announcement could be made with the donation announcement. Just a thought.

This thread is really about HAL's smoking policy! :(

You have deliberately misled some of us who believed it was about "on deck for the cure"..:(

Are you implying that there is only one type of cancer ... or that the On Deck for the Cause is for research and support for only one type of cancer?

My objective was not to mention smoking. There are many types of cancer and one can lead to another. The shops sell sunscreen to prevent skin cancer and they sell cigarettes which are known to cause lung cancer which will evolve into other cancers. Keep the sunscreen, dump the cigarettes.

I think the confusion is because oaktree started a thread about On Deck for the Cure yesterday and the mods combined it with this smoking thread. I don't think he/she deliberately misled.

I agree. I was the 1st to respond and when I couldn't figure out what policy OP was talking about I assumed (INCORRECTLY) that it was about HAL's current smoking policy. It turned out not be about smoking policy but selling of tobbaco in the shops.

The Mods only combined the thread after the OP admitted in the post above yours that he/she is referring to HAL's policy of selling tobacco products! That's when I accused the OP of deliberately trying to mislead some of us! The Hosts decided that this board should have only one thread about smoking period..

Even though I & DH are NON SMOKER's it was getting to be too much on this board when there were 3-6 threads going at one time about the sales of cigarettes & HAL's smoking policy..

I'm one of those NON SMOKERS who is happy that the Mods have finally decided that only one thread is necessary!

I'm not sure I see a huge contradiction between supporting "Race for the Cure" and selling tobacco products. On the one hand, yes, they are profiting from sales of a product known to cause cancer. On the other hand, those customers are going to buy and use tobacco products either way. That is their choice. I admire what CVS is doing, but most companies haven't made that move.

I see more of a potential disconnect with allowing smoking in casinos and bars, which exposes employees to indoor secondhand smoke. As a nonsmoker, I can choose to avoid smoking areas on cruise ships; employees may not have that option. One way to show you're very serious about fighting cancer is to protect your employees as much as possible. :o

CVS made the change because they want to expand their insurance business not because they are an altruistic company.

Supporting cancer research or whatever via on deck for the cure and selling cigarettes really have nothing to do with each other.

don't disagree. my point was I do not believe the "original" thread about On Deck for Cure was started to "mislead" anyone. JMHO

I don't disagree either, and am another non smoker who is happy that there is only one smoking thread. My point is the same as freestyling's. I said what I did because to me it looks like the threads were merged sometime between 6:22 and 7:39 last night. I saw the thread last night before it was moved. The post by oaktree before mine was made at 7:15am today.

this board is not on your time..Each post is auto recorded on Eastern Standard Time..Look at post no 1439 it was made at 7:22 last night! And I made my post on the original thread, not on the merged thread!

The moved thread was done between 8:22 p.m. & 9:39 p.m. by the Hosts.. It was not moved between 6:22 & 7:39...If you look at page two, of this forum, you will see the time when it was merged! And again the times are in Eastern Standard time.. /SIZE]

Not exactly true...under settings in the USER CP, there is a section "Date & Time Options" I have set mine to Pacific...all posts reflect that time....poster may very well have done the same

I went back and re-read everything and do see what you're saying. (I do know the board isn't on my time zone, too). For me it shows one hour later, not 3 like east coast time would be. Anyway to me it looked like it was merged on one day and his latest post was the next day.

Oh well, it isn't up to me to defend someone, let him speak for himself. :D:p

This is correct.

The USER CP is located in the left hand corner at the top of each page.

Click on the USER CP then look in the column on the left side and find "Edit Options." Click and the next page has several things you can change. The fourth box is the Date and Time option.

Set that for your time zone and be sure to click your choice of the Daylight Savings Time option.

Thank you -- I just checked mine, and the DST wasn't clicked (why mine showed 1 hour later than it is). All is right now. :D

Surely each post's time is logged in Universal Time. Each user gets to choose the time zone used for the display.

Thanks Blue Mudshark & Walt for clarifying this...I had forgotten that the user can change the posting times for their time zones.. It's been years since I checked my user CP.. However I did post before you merged the two threads.. I have the automatic DST checked in my user CP..

Looks like this thread has drifted considerably, much the way smoke drifts on HAL balconies. :(

LOL! Guess the moderators have been busy removing the very useful HALFacts sticky instead of getting this thread back on topic.

That said, I do hope HAL will continue to allow smoking on balconies!
