Healthcare worker possibly exposed to Ebola, sailing on Carnival ship

Just heard on the news this morning about a passenger on a Carnival ship who was a nurse in the hospital in Dallas and handled specimens from the man who died. She and her husband still went on their cruise and she now has quarantined herself and the husband to their cabin and contacted CDC because she is showing symptoms of Ebola. Please folks, if you have been in contact with ANYONE who has this disease, don't go on a cruise.

Thought I heard this morning that it has been 19 days since her last possible exposure and that NO signs of Ebola had surfaced. After 21 days she would supposedly be clear if no symptons arise but it is clear the CDC is learning what they don't know about this disease. But this is a nightmare scenario for the cruise industry.

She IS NOT showing signs of Ebola and is on day 19 with no symptoms...she voluntarily isolated herself and her husband after being contacted by our government on the ship...I repeat, she HAS NO symptoms...please do not add to the hysteria with such statements...

Nurses are not stupid. Nurses work around sick and infectious people everyday. What do you want them to do? Live in the hospital?

Have you never visited a sick child or had a sick kid at home and then went to work after being in the house with them.

I hope your "intent" to share this was better intentioned that what you actually typed out.

Anyone capable of using Google can see that your transcription of events does not accurately reflect what is being reported in the USA Today (see link below).

PEOPLE.... let's not create an event that panics people unnecessarily.

I wasn't going to participate in this discussion until I saw your post. You are spot on. Many people tend to react emotionally rather than logically. My guess is that some reading this type of tread might panic and cancel a cruise. As FDR said: "All we have to fear is, fear itself".

Get your Flu shot.

I know you can't change topic titles here on CC, but I think it would be appropriate for a moderator to step in and indicate in some way that there is NO Ebola on a cruise ship. OP must have only been on his first cup of coffee when hearing this story as he (or she) heard wrong.

What I typed out was exactly as it was reported on the news this AM. On the Carnival boards it is being reported that this ship, Carnival Magic, was refused entry into Belize due to this situation and that the ship is being escorted back to Texas.

It is not my intention to cause panic, but I do not feel that our government is not telling us what is really going and is covering up much of this problem. Believe what you want but I put much more faith in first hand reports than what is printed in a government influenced press.

My primary purpose in my initial post was to plead with people who have been exposed to avoid going on a cruise ship and spreading the disease. Sorry if you don't agree with that point of view.

So, using this logic, no health care professional who treats a patient with any contagious/infectious condition, should be allowed to travel.

I've been waiting for the ebola topic to surface here.

Sailing in less than a month and definitely concerned about flying into the US (read: concerned about my flight from Canada being allowed into the US}. People are screaming for the US border to be closed. I can't see that happening, and hope it doesn't.

Also, to a lesser extent, being concerned about a (potential) situation like the one on Carnival and with the airline where the nurse in contact with the ebola patient flew out of state.

We're always on high alert when we travel for fear of noro. We'll have to be even more diligent in the coming weeks.

I've changed the thread title, which hopefully reflects the current situation.

Based on their logic, basically everyone shouldn't travel, because at some point in our lives we're going to be exposed to some sort of infectious disease. (i.e. the flu, the mumps, or the measles)

Let's first understand something here....

1) You do not have a "first hand" account of anything since you are not on the cruise ship.

2) You indicate that you "...typed out was exactly as it was reported on the news this AM." Since no reference to the news source was provided, I have less faith in what you have posted than I do of a mainstream news media.

3) I can provide links to other widely respected news sources all basically saying the same thing, which is that the health care worker is NOT showing signs of illness.

4) The cruise ship was NOT refused entry to Belize, only the passenger and travel companion on board the ship.

Honestly, I don't know what your intent was in making your post. However, it had the same effect on plenty of people all being left with the same impression, which is that you didn't get the facts right in your first post.

I have nothing further to add.

Carnival posted a very fact based post in their FB page...

"Fact based?" It seems no one (including the media) really gives a flying fig about facts. The media certainly IMHO appear to be taking every opportunity to whip the public into an irrational frenzy. Bottom line....More people in the US have died from the flu, but somehow that isn't sensational enough to give air time.

Things are still unknown, lets side on caution.

Ebola is not the flu.

Is it Canada that is screaming for the US border to be closed? The only thing people are saying here are that they would like the flights from those countries like Liberia with a high infection rate to be stopped until the situation is under control and the spread of the disease has been contained.

There is a difference between unknowingly having crossed paths with someone that might have been exposed to some sort of infectious disease and being someone who has definitively been in contact with a patient who has a confirmed case of ebola (or their body fluids). I'm definitely sympathetic towards the frontline healthcare works whose lives are also put at risk, but they are also in position to easily prevent/control/mitigate transmissions of this highly contagious disease, especially while the powers that be are still trying to figure out what steps are needed to prevent/control/mitigate transmission of this highly contagious disease.

What I've read at other message boards (non-cruising) are from Americans wanting the US borders to be closed to prevent more people from bringing the disease into the US. Many are calling for a stop to direct flights from countries with high infection rates, but not all of those flights will come direct. Many flights will route from other "hub" countries without high infection rates.

I am a retired RN...and the worst I was exposed to was TB and MRSA. We should not panic, of course, with only two cases of Ebola diagnosed thus far.

However, think about this....the Ebola virus is rated as Bio level 4 virus. The MOST Lethal. Think about that.

I for one, do not believe the government and what they say..how can anyone, when the CDC keeps changing the protocol on how to handle this Ebola Situation?

Anyone who has handled blood samples, come into contact with a person testing positive for Ebola should be in self quarantine for 21 days. Any person who has been exposed to a person with Ebola who has only, thus far, exhibited a fever, should be quarantined.

This needs to be done until we know more about how the virus behaves in our environment (as opposed to Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia).

Should people panic? No, of course not! Caution and wisdom are called for. Right now there are only four hospitals equipped to properly handle Ebola patients. Just four.

We will be leaving for a cruise in January for the Caribbean. I am not at all concerned. I am more concerned about catching the Norovirus, which, in its early stages resembles Ebola

We need to have confidence in the CDC and our Govt. Right now, I don't.
