Peer-to-peer communication allowed in ship network?

I have mixed feelings about this. While it would be nice to message my husband to meet me somewhere(when I'm at the pool and he is wandering the ship), part of being on a cruise is DISCONNECTING. In my sales job and also in my Beachbody business, I am connected all of the time. I am always answer emails, texts, phone calls etc. I also don't want to hear other people's phones DINGing.

I have no intention of using the app to keep in touch with my wife or anybody else. I'm more looking forward to implementation of the system that lets me check my onboard folio, the patter, etc. I still don't see myself carrying my phone around the ship. I generally turn it off and stick it in the safe but being able to check things on the TV (or sometimes on the phone) sounds good. I agree that I don't want to have to listen to people's obnoxious ringtones or alerts.

Even without the messenger service, you can communicate peer-to-peer over the local wifi without logging in to the Internet. If you're using an iOS device, once you've connected to the network, tap the little blue i in the circle next to the network name, then in the settings that appear select auto join as on and auto login as off. That way it will stay on the wifi even if you haven't logged into the Internet.

On one cruise I ran a voip switchboard (PBX in a Flash) in a virtual machine on my laptop and my travel buddy and I each ran the Groundwire voip client on our cellphones. We could call each other or leave messages just to let each other know where we were.

Nowadays, it just seems like too much work for "I'm at the buffet, wanna join me?" and "Nah, I'll just stay in the casino visiting my long lost money."

As more people do this, the IT folks have been fairly diligent about blocking unauthorized services.

You do not need the messenger service for the functions you wish to use.

"The award-winning Princess@Sea mobile app debuted aboard Royal Princess in 2013 giving guests the ability to check the day’s events and activities, review the ship’s itinerary and port guides, browse restaurant menus and even access their stateroom account."

So is all they have to do on the Royal to add the messenger to the existing app? If so then maybe they will have it up and ready by our cruise on 01/28. I would enjoy the convenience of the messenger to locate DH without looking all over the ship. I know that we are not going to be spending every minute with each other for 20 days lol. I think the app would make it easier to enjoy individual interests. As far as annoying other passengers, that is what "vibrate" is for on your phone.

The problem is that many people do not realize that is what "vibrate" is for on their phones.

Think of all the movies you seen and concerts you attended where someone's cell phone rang for all in the audience to hear.

No wonder Princess has stopped using the slogan "Escape Completely."
