We have done both my whole family ages 48,26,25 and 23 all prefer Royal. They like the entertainment better and the food much better! We only eat at the buffets and Royal is so much better. My hubby don't really care much for pizza and many evening that's what he ended up eating on Carnival. On our cruise in Sept the Windjammer always had some kind of chicken breast, different meat dishes and even Beef Wellington one night the guys said it was delicious!

To me the cabins are all basically the same small rooms we use to sleep and shower. That's our opinion!

I've cruised on the majority of the different cruise lines. I'm not brand loyal to any of them. I've found that each cruise line has its strengths and weaknesses. I think Royal easily has the worst food at sea.

I've been on multiple ships on Royal and their food is simply the pits. I'm talking hard cookies, frozen quality pizza, hot dog buns so hard they couldn't be chewed, cold food that should have been hot in both the buffet and MDR, etc. I've never been on the Oasis/Allure class, but am trying that out later this month. Hopefully I don't lose weight on this cruise again.

With that said, it's not enough of a deterrent that I won't cruise on Royal. Royal probably has the best entertainment at sea. They usually have great shows, comedians, singers, etc. There is almost always something for everyone to do and enjoy going on.

Carnival has larger rooms. But, let's face it, no rooms on any ship are really what you would consider spacious.

Seriously, you eat hot dogs on a cruise, and on that basis you declare the food is the pits? Seriously?:D

Loyal CCL cruiser here but Taking our first RCCL cruise in January.

We have been very happy with every CCL cruise, The ship, the crew and food always very good- never an issue or problem.

Carnival has/is awesome. Im sure we will be happy with RCCL and NCL are also.

heck, its a cruise ship !! How can anything be bad????

I've cruised on both. A few comments.

In general find MDR food comparable.

Prefer RCI Windjammer to Carnival's Lido Buffet

Prefer Carnival's Serenity Deck (outside) to RCI Solarium

Think Royal wins in entertainment generally

Cruise Directors are equally corny and think they are equally funny

Service on RCI maybe a bit better than Carnival

Live poker dealer in RCI Casiino vs computer poker in Carnival

As others have said they are more alike than not. DW prefers RCI so here we are. :)

Sigh....I guess you're not happy unless I say that everything on Royal is awesome. But I'm sorry, it's not. Who hasn't grabbed a hotdog, a burger, or the like on a pool day? Royal even has a venue that only serves hot dogs. You'd really think that nobody could mess up a hot dog.....but surprise!

If you need even more examples of poorly executed food, I've got plenty. Overcooked steaks, rubbery seafood, overcooked pasta, and separated creme brûlée are all additional examples. The food has just been straight up bad in my experience.

Like I said before, I still enjoy cruises on Royal and am going on one later this month. Each line has good and bad characteristics.

Since reading your profile you have NEVER been on a royal cruise, In fact you just started posting on a few Royal posts starting this past April.

Again you have never been on a Royal ship, never posted past last April about anything but bad service on Royal, me thinkith you are a Carnival Cheerleader.

You have posted a lot of times since 2007 on Carnival, but none on Royal !!!!

Food on both are the same.

They both have warm chewy cookies, great pizza, great hamburgers and hotdogs. The food in the MDR was always hot and fresh.

The omelet station on Royal had great made to order eggs.

With that said, it's not enough of a deterrent that I won't cruise on Royal. Royal probably has the best entertainment at sea. They usually have great shows, comedians, singers, etc. There is almost always something for everyone to do and enjoy going on.

You must have read how good Royal's shows are, since Carnival does not have half of the entertainment, unless you count the DJ at the pool vs Royal having a live band, live entertainment in the pubs, Real shows in the theaters, and a awesome Ice show.

Carnival has larger rooms. But, let's face it, no rooms on any ship are really what you would consider spacious.

When we travel on carnival, we had to get two rooms ( the largest suite, and a inside. )because 4 people can not stay in 1 room.

But on Royal ( just one suite ) we had more than enough room.

Wow, BigTex....attack people much?

According to my profile I've never been on any cruise. I don't feel the need to post each and every cruise I've been on. I also don't feel the need to make thousands of posts about nothing. I didn't realize I there was a requirement to post a set number of times on various things. There's really no need for a big ego.

I'm no Carnival cheerleader. I've been on multiple cruise lines, multiple times. I've been on Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Princess, Celebrity, Pullmantur, Costa, MSC, and Holland America. I'm not sure why you seem to equate variety with being a cheerleader.

Each cruise line, from my experience, is more similar than not. However, each line has things that are generally better or worse than other lines. Food is definitely Royal's weakest link, in my opinion.

I'm glad your experience with Royal's food has been stellar. However, that has not been my experience.

Royal Caribbean all the way! My husband calls Carnival the Wal-mart of cruise lines!:p

Your husband is very original, I've never heard anyone say that on this forum or on a cruise before! If I was married to your husband I would brag all day about how funny and original he is and tell everyone I know, see and meet how he won me over with his witt and banter. I can only imagine what he has to say about Airlines like Southwest and JetBlue. I wouldn't even wanna mention the Holiday Inn cause I'd fear dying from laughing too hard.

I don't really get that statement though. If Carnival is Walmart, then RCI is Target? It's ultimately the exact same thing except one charges a little bit more. Regardless where you buy a toaster from, it's still going to toast. It's not like were comparing Carnival to Princess, Celebrity, HAL Those would be the Macys, Dillards, and JC Penny in my analogy since Carnival was cleverly said to be like Walmart.

OP, Having said that and having gone on both cruiselines I agree entertainment is better on RCI if you like the shows, but just normal stuff to do like pools, trivia, Casino, comedians and lounging out they are both the same. I also prefer the food on Carnival over RCI in the MDR but RCI has a wide variety of Specialty Restuarants which are fantastic. The buffets are the same some of its unedible other stuff is really surprisingly good. Guys Burgers is better then Johnny Rockets IMO and it's free! Pizza is better on Carnival after they switched the dough a little over a year ago. Also Carnival has bigger cabins or atleast seem bigger to me.

If it were up to me I would choose based off of the ports interested in visiting and then check out ships. Obviously if Carnival Paradise was the same itinerary as FOTS I would choose FOTS because the ship is much better but if it was Carnival Pride vs Vision of the Seas I would choose the Pride all day especially now that its getting all the upgrades.

So I would choose which ports you want to visit at the time you'd like to go and then see which ships fit that criteria. Then read ship reviews and see what you think fits your lifestyle and price point. You'll be much happier coming to your own conclusion then asking people who are going to be biased one way or another with anecdotal evidence as to why one cruiseline is better then the other.

Just my thoughts, take them for what they're worth.

I have been on 3 Carnival

Cruises with the last being the Dream when it was1 or two years old. Then, I tried NCL Epic which was a disaster (sorry to anyone who likes NCL). I went on my first Royal cruise last December on Allure. I am going back on Allure over Thanksgiving but I would not hesitate to travel on Carnival again.

I enjoyed the MDR food better on Royal vs my last trip on the Dream except when it comes to dessert and Carnival wins.

I preferred the lido choices of food vs windjammer.

I love the specialty restaurant options

On Royal.

Entertainment to Royal hands down especially on Allure.

Activities very similar.

My service on Carnival was always positive with no complaints. I do feel the level of service experienced on Royal was a step above.

Even on my NCL Epic disaster, I enjoyed myself because I met some great people and there were a few employees who were great.

Any cruise is better than none at all!

Sorry, this comparison of Free Food between RCL and Carnival is RCL's weakest area! The RCL buffets are the worst at sea, even compared to Carnival!

Basically nothing edible for free available after 9 pm, and not much before 9 pm!

RCL's burgers vs Carnival's Guy's burgers= Carnival wins!

RCL's pizza vs Carnival's pizza = Carnival's a lot better!

RCL's pre-made sandwiches vs Carnival's sandwich shop= Carnival wins!

Carnival's burrito shop vs nothing on RCL= Carnival wins!

Carnivals fish & Chips vs nothing on RCL= Carnival wins!

Both MDR's are weak, Carnival a little better!

RCL wins in the extra pay restaurant food!

That's our opinion!:)

That's all you got, hot dogs, the reviewer was correct, 'no one' chooses RCL for their free food choices or quality!

Another RC vote here.

Everyone can share their opinions, experiences, etc but ultimately it comes down to you and what you are looking for.

Try a few different class of ships on each line and see which works for you.:D

Since I can usually find something fun and positive on any line if necessary, I'd rather be on a ship I wasn't super psyched about, than home on land reading about them. :p
