GreenValleyDogWalker Posted January 24, 2015 #1 Share Posted January 24, 2015 Hi We are on the Golden for a 3-day cool 50-Year Class Reunion cruise (end of March) Wondering about schedule for first day - we are having a "sail away" gathering from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM - and are supposed to gather again up in Skywalkers at 7:30 PM Would we (4-6 of us) have time to have dinner at the Crown Grill (reservations at 6:00 PM - through in time to be at Skywalkers at 7:30 PM ?) or would that be pushing it too much ? Another option we are discussing is having room service delivered to our suite that first night. I seem to recall that room service is not available when you board on that first day - but am not sure if it is available for dinner room service on that first night ...anyone know ? (don't like dining in MDR - long story) THANKS !!
SadieN Posted January 24, 2015 #2 Share Posted January 24, 2015 You could do the Crown Grill but you'd be pushing it. Could always do the buffet.
Lovetocruiseprincess Posted January 24, 2015 #3 Share Posted January 24, 2015 Either the Crown grill or Sabatini's will take at least 2 hours to eat dinner even if you rush.
Colo Cruiser Posted January 24, 2015 #4 Share Posted January 24, 2015 You can eat as fast as you want, just let your waiter know. ;)
Rare cr8tiv1 Posted January 24, 2015 #5 Share Posted January 24, 2015 The larger the table, the longer the Crown Grill will take. Have down it with 2 in two hours and 5 in about 3 hours. I have also ordered MDR room service the first night. That is a good option for your first night in a suite.
Astro Flyer Posted January 24, 2015 #6 Share Posted January 24, 2015 (edited) What a great way to have a 50th year reunion! Others posted how long dinner takes at the CG but remember that muster drill is just before sailing. Our recent 3 day cruise from LA was scheduled to sail at 4:00 with muster drill at 3:30 but was postponed until 4:00 (late departure) which would affect yout sailaway gathering and possibly make it even more difficult to squeeze in so many activities. SingerEsq Posted January 24, 2015 #7 Share Posted January 24, 2015 (edited) We just got off a 3-day on the Crown. If your entire party gets to the Crown Grill promptly at 6:00 and let your server know your time constraints, I think you can make it. You might even suggest that your party members stop by after embarkation and look at the menu (posted outside), so that they know what they want upon being seated. Getting seated and ordering can eat up 20 minutes. Also, make sure on shorter cruises to get your reservations in early for any and all 3 nights, if you do not like the MDR. We did the Crown Grill on first and 3rd nights. Totally booked. They were turning people away. Also, we have not been to Sabatini's since they refreshed the menu. Could not even get a reservation until 8:30. We had grown kind of tired of Sabatini's and have not done it in a few years. But everything we had was amazing. Lots of new selections. Best meal of the cruise. P.S. Our 4 p.m. sailing was delayed until almost 6:30. Captain said it had something to do with clearance. Edited January 24, 2015 by SingerEsq Added comment. JF - retired RRT Posted January 24, 2015 #8 Share Posted January 24, 2015 P.S. Our 4 p.m. sailing was delayed until almost 6:30. Captain said it had something to do with clearance. Sounds like the sailing we were on (when they were repeatedly paging 2 different couples to contact the PAX services desk?) If so, it wasn't the kind of clearance you are thinking;). We were on the promenade near the boarding area and saw security & police leading a man off wearing handcuffs with his very unhappy wife/girlfriend following with all the luggage. We went back inside and the next day spoke with someone who saw 2 different handcuffed men. That is sort of "clearance".:D

Sounds like a good idea - did you just call the Dine Line as soon as you boarded ? (Isn't that kind of hard to get through to ?) - Or what is the best process ? THANKS !! Calling the DINE line has worked best for us & faster than walking around the ship to discover if they have a reservation table setup at either the Crown Grill or Sabatini's. We board quickly & call the DINE line & sometimes before a reservation table was set up. Edited January 24, 2015 by Astro Flyer
CruisingJs Posted January 24, 2015 #13 Share Posted January 24, 2015 Sounds like a good idea - did you just call the Dine Line as soon as you boarded ? (Isn't that kind of hard to get through to ?) - Or what is the best process ? THANKS !! If you're talking about room service, just call about 20 minutes before you're ready to have dinner. Room service to suites is very quick. You will have to ask your room steward for the menus first anyway. We've had suites a few times and the menus were not there when we arrived. Once you request them, he will leave menus each day.

IECalCruiser Posted January 25, 2015 #16 Share Posted January 25, 2015 Sometimes the DINE line was not answering calls for several hours after embarkation started. You might have a problem reserving the CG or Sabatini's early on embarkation day. Last year we stopped at the table shortly after we boarded and were told we couldn't book until 8:00 p.m. It was early and it didn't make sense that earlier times were all booked. When I said we were in a suite, the earlier times could be booked. At least on the Sapphire last year they we holding earlier times for suite passenger complementary dinners. Mike:) We have had issues in the last couple of years. Just be prepared with options such as DINE line or the table typically outside of Sabatini's on many ships. LoveThisCruisingThing Posted January 25, 2015 #19 Share Posted January 25, 2015 Three of us are at the Crown on Christmas Eve. We were there 2 1/2 hours and felt no need to rush. I think 1 1/2 hrs will not be enough. Count on at least 2.
