Rare mightycruisequeen Posted February 3, 2015 #1 Share Posted February 3, 2015 I'm hoping Copper 10-8 or someone else in the know will be able to tell me if HAL allows passengers to bring a small acoustic guitar onboard? After our last cruise that was over a month long, my husband had lost his calluses, and he also said he felt really rusty at playing. He's hoping to bring along a little practice guitar to play softly in our room on our next long cruise, to keep his calluses & his chops.:D
Oceanwench Posted February 3, 2015 #2 Share Posted February 3, 2015 My daughter's fiancé is a musician - guitar and drums. He brought his ukelele on board. No one questioned him.
Krazy Kruizers Posted February 3, 2015 #3 Share Posted February 3, 2015 Yes -- he can bring it on board. BUT -- please tell him to play softly as cabins on either side may hear him and may not appreciate the music.
jtl513 Posted February 3, 2015 #4 Share Posted February 3, 2015 (edited) We had a Lower Promenade cabin on the Veendam and one night had a man sitting on the bench outside our window playing a guitar for about an hour. . I hope his neighbors like listening to acoustic guitar. The walls aren't that thick..... hope the neighbors aren't disturbed. He can go out on the promenade (preferably in an area where there are no cabins if on the older 9 ships) and play while disturbing hardly anyone. There are also areas on top decks of all 15 ships that are very lightly used in the evenings.
Rare mightycruisequeen Posted February 3, 2015 Author #7 Share Posted February 3, 2015 I'm sure he'll be careful not to play over our neighbors' snoring ;) I like the suggestions of the upper deck areas too. Thanks :) He'll try not to be a nuisance, promise!

Rare mightycruisequeen Posted February 3, 2015 Author #9 Share Posted February 3, 2015 OP said he wants to play in their 'room'. We want to watch TV in our room too, and the TV is a lot louder than that little guitar.
COMBOY Posted February 3, 2015 #10 Share Posted February 3, 2015 Sure, you can bring on board anything and as much as you like as long as you can reasonably fit it in your cabin UNLESS it's an item that HAL specifically prohibits like firearms, explosives, chemicals, irons, etc. Musical instruments would be allowed and you can play it as long as it doesn't disturb other passengers. Oceanwench Posted February 3, 2015 #11 Share Posted February 3, 2015 (edited) The TV is definitely louder than an acoustic guitar! And I've never been disturbed by a neighbor's TV. Edited February 3, 2015 by Oceanwench
Krazy Kruizers Posted February 3, 2015 #12 Share Posted February 3, 2015 The TV is definitely louder than an acoustic guitar! And I've never been disturbed by a neighbor's TV. On a Princess cruise we were disturbed by the cabin next door to us. Father had the TV on loud from 1 AM until 5 AM. Small child's play time was during those times. Wife was in casino and elsewhere. We complained to the front desk after 2 nights of no sleep. Front desk came up on 3rd night to investigate. Brought French fries for both of them. Called us and said there was nothing they could do about the noise as they were friends of the captain. We were working at that time and arrived home only to have to go to work the next dead tired. Oceanwench Posted February 3, 2015 #13 Share Posted February 3, 2015 But the OP is talking about HAL. DH often watches TV until 2 a.m. Never has had anyone tell him to turn it down. I never hear a sound from neighboring cabins. Perhaps they are more soundproofed than Princess Cruises' cabins? I am sure my daughter's fiancé picked up his ukelele quite a few times in their room. They also brought speakers for the music - attached to iPod.

ger_77 Posted February 4, 2015 #16 Share Posted February 4, 2015 Your DH won't have a problem; my DH and his friend are in a musical group and they both brought their travel guitars on a cruise for the same reason. They got together a number of times and played - yes, quietly - these are acoustic guitars, not electric with amplifiers - in either our cabin or theirs. A couple of evenings they were playing on the Promenade deck and a number of people stopped by to listen as they were walking, some even requesting songs. It was nice. Smooth Sailing! :) :)
mollyanne Posted February 4, 2015 #17 Share Posted February 4, 2015 Several years ago we were on a Celebrity cruise. Our son was 18. He hooked up with a bunch of nice young people about his age and one had an acoustic guitar. That was the glue that seemed to hold them all together at night as they sat on deck together. It is a nice cruise memory for him - and us - as they were not getting into any trouble and not disturbing anyone.

Maybe he can do a duet with the guitar player on board. Over the years I've seen different kinds of musician passengers accompanied the piano player. take us away Posted February 4, 2015 #19 Share Posted February 4, 2015 Once we had someone bring their violin on board (he was a concert violinist) and he would play on the top deck each evening. Happened across him star gazing one night. It was a highlight for many as he played everything from classical to hard rock. By day 3 he had an audience including officers and other crew and by day 4 they were setting up chairs!

Rare mightycruisequeen Posted February 4, 2015 Author #22 Share Posted February 4, 2015 Thanks so much for all of your responses, your encouraging stories, as well as cautionary tales. Looks like we'll probably be schlepping a little acoustic guitar onto our next ship. :)
boatmad Posted February 4, 2015 #23 Share Posted February 4, 2015 Just returned from the Ryndam with the jazzsea cruise. We were not part of that large group. Had many people practicing in their cabins and it was very intrusive. They were really nice people, but never again!
igraf Posted February 4, 2015 #24 Share Posted February 4, 2015 (edited) I have. We were next a strange younger couple that had their TV blasting for hours. I mean really loud. I finally had to complain both to them and the office. It takes a lot to send sound through the HAL cabin walls, but they managed to do so. The wife spoke to me at their door so I know that she wasn't deaf. I suppose the husband might have been, though it seemed that they spent a lot of time in their room doing nothing but watch TV. They were odd. igraf ..And I've never been disturbed by a neighbor's TV. Edited February 4, 2015 by igraf
Caribbean Chris Posted February 4, 2015 #25 Share Posted February 4, 2015 I'd almost forgotten that my husband brought along a cornet (short trumpet) on a Med cruise 30 years ago (Royal Viking Line, not HAL.) He had an important concert immediately after we returned from a three week trip and needed to keep his lip in shape. He spoke to the Hotel Manager who suggested good times each day and the ideal place, a room hidden away where the onboard musicians also rehearsed. But acoustic guitar is so much softer than brass. I think he'd be unlikely to disturb anyone by playing in your cabin during the daytime, but you can always tell your neighbors to let you know if they can hear it.
