sue1898 Posted February 24, 2015 #1 Share Posted February 24, 2015 Foggy this morning and again this afternoon. Just learned Royal Carribean can't dock because they can't safely travel under the Skyway bridge: http://www.abcactionnews.com/news/region-tampa/sea-fog-keep-royal-caribbean-ship-brilliance-of-the-seas-from-docking
sail7seas Posted February 24, 2015 #2 Share Posted February 24, 2015 That's not a terribly unusual circumstance in Tampa. I love sailing from/to Tampa and but always plan flight home for next day just in case fog makes it impossible for the ship to come to the dock. Rare rafinmd Posted February 24, 2015 #3 Share Posted February 24, 2015 I've gotten the definite impression from the thread on the RCI forum that the fog may not even cooperate tomorrow: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2172283&page=7 Roy

Caribbean Chris Posted February 24, 2015 #7 Share Posted February 24, 2015 The port itself is closed this morning. (So it doesn't matter what kind of navigation system the ship has. They still must use local harbor pilots and enter the port.)

Snook Posted February 24, 2015 #9 Share Posted February 24, 2015 Check out the Tampa Port webcam. Entire port is totally fogged in. Radar shows Brilliance off the coast. Pilots just advised (again) that port is closed due to fog.
sue1898 Posted February 24, 2015 Author #10 Share Posted February 24, 2015 News just reported that they do not expect the sea fog to lift so the port can open until PERHAPS mid afternoon. There is a large group of Ohio State alumni on board along with coach Urban Meyer.
sppunk Posted February 24, 2015 #11 Share Posted February 24, 2015 The issue is the ship is a 4-5 hr sail to port, so even if it lifts at the port they are a ways away. And the other way around, the ship might be in clear skies but the port is fogged in. A bad deal for those onboard and those who were supposed to have cruised this week. geocruiser Posted February 25, 2015 #16 Share Posted February 25, 2015 They 5-day cruise that was supposed to start yesterday was cancelled. I just read that on RCCL web site. The fog really must be heavy.
PathfinderEss Posted February 25, 2015 #17 Share Posted February 25, 2015 (edited) Brilliance of the Seas in still in Tampa port. Guess it will be sitting there empty for what, 3 days or so. Interesting..... Edited February 25, 2015 by PathfinderEss
Tampa Girl Posted February 25, 2015 #18 Share Posted February 25, 2015 This morning's paper predicted that the heavy fog would continue into Thursday. I don't believe that I have ever seen fog this bad here. A local radio station warned motorists who take the Veterans's Expressway, to avoid it. A 15-minute trip would take over an hour. Oh, well, better than six feet of snow and nowhere to put it. Still, I feel for the RCL passengers scheduled for the aborted cruise. I wouldn't have minded going aboard and just staying in port! Rare rafinmd Posted February 25, 2015 #19 Share Posted February 25, 2015 Brilliance of the Seas in still in Tampa port.Guess it will be sitting there empty for what, 3 days or so. Interesting..... Speculation is that it will be moved to an unused cargo slip where mooring fees are lower. PAX had until 10AM to clear out so if it moves it would likely be this afternoon. Still, I feel for the RCL passengers scheduled for the aborted cruise. I wouldn't have minded going aboard and just staying in port! You're right.... I'd trade your fog for our OVER 8' of snow, so far. :D .... and no place to put it. My snow plow guy was back here this morning. I'm almost to the point of having an omelet ready for him each morning. I feel awful for people missing their cruise but from time to time, conditions force such cancellations. Disappointing, for sure. Hope one of you will keep this thread alive and let us know when the cruise port gets back to normal. Stay safe. sammiedawg Posted February 25, 2015 #22 Share Posted February 25, 2015 The Buckeye cruise for cancer disembarked last night, Urban Myer said the ship took excellent care of everyone and they did not run out of food or drink. Everyone on board got a cruise credit for the Inconvenience, nice gesture.
lettienets Posted February 26, 2015 #23 Share Posted February 26, 2015 Well as long as there is no fog to interfere with the start of our cruise...don't even want to think about it. Well we have the luck of the Irish on ours, right!
gatorbill62 Posted February 26, 2015 #24 Share Posted February 26, 2015 Fog came back this evening. I live in St Petersburg and can usualy see the Skyway bridge from where we are. NOT TONIGHT it is thick. It is supposed to clear tomorrow afternoon when the winds shift. I agree I would rather have fog that blows away that 8ft of snow like Sail is experiencing.
