Water Shuttle in San Marco

In August 2013, we paid $15 AUD per person on each of the 2 days we were in Venice (Dawn Princess World Cruise from Sydney). Princess deliver the tickets for everyone to your cabin and charge your shipboard account. If you do not want to use the tickets you return them to Passenger Services and your account is adjusted.

We used the tickets both days as it was easier and a quicker way to get to St Marks Square. The shuttle does NOT travel along the Grand Canal, it uses the same waterway that the cruise ship travels to and from its berth. We had been to Venice previously so decided that this was the easiest and cheapest solution for us.

Thank you for the quick responses. In terms of the cost of other activities on this cruise $10 - $15 pp is close to free. Does the shuttle run 24/7 and are they scheduled for specific times or run on demand... when enough passengers are aboard waiting?

It probably stops running by mid-night, but I am not sure. Sort of runs continuously during the time it operates.

As someone pointed out, it does not go down the Grand Canal. If you have never been to Venice, a "must" is to take the overpriced ride down the Grand Canal. Go from near the ship using the People Mover to Piazzale Roma where you can get the No.1 or No. 2 Vaporetto to St. Mark' Square. (They take the same route, but one is an express and takes about half the time to get there.)

One of my fondest memories was when we were on a Vaparetto headed to St Marks square and the Brand new Royal Princess was coming into the port. We were very close to the Royal and knowing that we would be on that ship the next day was exciting. BTW, we never used the shuttle tickets that were in our cabin as our hotel was a short walk to the people mover to get to the ship. Plus we had Vaparetto tickets good for like 48 hours that were given to us from someone who didn't need them anymore(lucky us). Most of our time in Venice was walking as it is a great walking city.

At least in 2013, they gave everyone on the ship water taxi tickets. But it wasn't charged to your account until you used them. Since we has been on a land tour we didn't need them and was not charged.

Because some passengers were getting charged when they did not use the tickets they did not do this on our Regal cruise in Oct.

We just walked from the train station to the ship, and avoided the people mover. :)

Princess offers a shuttle. Unlimited rides for a set amount. It runs between the cruise terminal and San Marco Plaza. Cost is based on the length of time the ship is in port. Thus the variation in prices above.

Note that Princess delivers a ticket for each passenger to your cabin. Unless you turn in the ticket for a refund, you will be charged.

There is a much better alternative. You can take the people mover over to Piazza Roma and buy yourself a 12 or 24 hour vaporetto pass and then hop on the #1 to San Marco. It's a beautiful ride and a tour of Venice at the same time. The ships transfer goes on the outside of the Island. Then you have your vaporetto pass for the day and can hop on and hop off all over the place.

Can also take Vaporetto#2 which takes the same route, but does it faster as it does not make as many stops. Same scenery. Less waiting times along the way.

Note that the pass is not for the Princess shuttle.

Fall 2013 when we were there, it was not 24 hours, it had a set schedule. They do tell you when the last one back to the ship is, approx 11pm for us. It gave you plenty of time to have dinner and still get back without rushing.
