Clean it up!

This is not so much a review of our recent cruise, but rather, it is a way to vent about a pet peeve that we seem to encounter on just about every cruise.

People, if you get food from the buffet and take it to another place on the ship to eat it, after you are done, clean up after yourself! Don’t leave your half-eaten bacon on the stairs, your plate of ketchup-soaked fries under a lounge chair, or your bowl of melted ice cream alongside the pool deck.

It floors me how inconsiderate people are when it comes to having respect for others.

It’s time for everyone to take responsibility for his or her social behavior and act like considerate human beings, not selfish slobs.

When I see things like you mentioned or what I hate the most, people putting out cigarettes on the casino floor, I always wonder what their houses must look like, because surely they don't change their behavior when they are out and about.

I agree with you. People seem to think that "staff will pick after them".

Have you noticed lately, when staff eats in the buffet, they pick up their dirty dishes and silverware and put them in the proper bus tubs?

I've yet to see a self serve bus station or even a garbage can except for the small one in my cabin. I think they have it that way so they can properly dispose of the waste but I may be wrong.

You walk to the garbage can. It's truly not difficult to do.

I would never even think to leave my dirty dishes on the floor.

Why don't people just eat where they are supposed to. They have people there to clean up. Do you really need a bite to eat on the stairs

We usually get lunch and bring it back to the pool to eat ... but you can bet your bottom that we walk our trays back to the garbage cans!

On both NCL cruises I have been on, there have been bus servers walking around constantly on the pool deck.

Heck, my latest cruise there was a BBQ at the pool everyday. It seems not only is it okay to eat by the pool, they encourage it.

My plates were always cleared within 15 minutes or so of finishing, I pay 12.95 daily service charge, I am on vacation, they can pick up my dishes at the pool.

** leaving dishes on the stairs, not that is another story ***

I've seen used diapers outside their door - so apparently it is ok for all their neighbors to experience a used diaper but they can't keep it in their own room.

This situation I would not hesitate to knock on their door and tell them so.

We had a situation years ago in Mc Donald's at the zoo (had no choice as it was the only eating place)and a women was changing babies diaper on the table, clearly you could see that it wasn't just urine. I ripped into to her like no tomorrow then I went and returned our food to the mgr. and left.

Don't recall if they had the change tables in bathrooms back then but still not the place to do it.

Actually, they will pick up after them eventually!

:D On a lighter note .... We were on a cruise recently where you almost had to hold on to your plate or glass to keep the "clean up folks" from taking it away. If you didn't keep your eye on it every minute --Bang -- it was gone. :D

Do the servers / bus staff know how the knife and fork are placed on the plate correlate to your progress through the meal. i.e. Fork on left pointing up with knife next to it means I'm finished?

Doubt it. I was told if you hadn't finished to put your napkin on the chair ?? But that didn't work either

They might encourage food At the pool, ie bar-b-que but I would never leave plates for anyone else to pick up :(

I typically inspect my flatware for cleanliness including water spots. My napkin has often been used to polish it removing spots and any other minuscule particles. By the napkin link provided, I'll probably ask for another utensil should the need arrive.

I'm not a geraphobe but spent years in the food industry and now rarely eat out.

Considering the clientele, once a nappy hits the chair, request a new one.:)

The OP has a point...it is disturbing to see how some people leave food and trash all over the ship. Unfortunately it is a sign of our times...lack of respect and civility by some. :(

I started wondering if these were the real reasons they are charging for room service and clamping down on people taking food away from the buffet and dining room. Honestly, it's gross. I don't like having to hop over plates of rotting food everywhere and it's gotten to be WAY WORSE than it has been when I started cruising 15 years ago. Back then the only food I found laying around was from room service and it was in the hall... now I find it EVERYWHERE. IT's honestly a hygiene issue.

I always remove my dishes from the table I'm eating at unless the bus person comes by first to remove it before I have finished my beverage. I put it at the bus station on the dirty section and move on with my day. It's a simple courtesy to the crew and I also feel like it's a responsible thing to do as someone else can use the table after me. :) The crew do it all the time because they do not pay the service charges so they help out for those lucky enough to have dining privileges in the buffet.
