Cruising with the "stars"

I often see or hear advertisements about going on a cruise with a "star" - country music stars, Christian musicians, even NASCAR drivers. I have a few questions:

1) Do the "stars" really just mingle on the ship with all their fans? Eat with them, hang out in the bars and pools, eat in the restaurants? I keep thinking that probably isn't much fun for the celebrities, being mauled by fans wherever they go.

2) If the cruise doesn't sell out to the fans of these stars, do the cruise lines just sell cabins to regular folk as usual?

3) Is there any way to find out ahead of time if a cruise you are considering going on contains a large group or special event like this? It would definitely influence my choice of cruise if I knew there was a massive group onboard like that. (I mean, what if I don't LIKE country music? Which I actually do, but you get my point...)

On our QM2 crossing in January there was the British actress Celia Imrie (US audiences would probably best know her from "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel"). Not only did I see her several times in the buffet, but she also was a keen participant in trivia :D

As for finding out what groups may be on a sailing, the best way is to Google your ship and dates, and see if anything pops up.

We did the Malt shop cruise last year (our 1st chartered cruise)

Some of the "stars" mingled & chatted with the passengers some did not

I guess it was a personal choice for them

It was a fun cruise in any case & we are booked for this yr

It may be different for groups on a ship rather than having the whole ship chartered for the event

You can google "Themed cruises" it should bring up some special event cruises & if they are fully chartered or not

Especially as most of the "stars" are old has beens who can't get a better paying gig.

Three thoughts on this:

1) As LHT28 said above, some of those old fogeys have still got it

2) Most of the "passengers" on cruise ships are older and probably remember when that old star used to be much more popular

3) If you could sell out a 15,000 seat stadium, would you really perform on a cruise ship for 2,000-5,000 fans who may or may not be paying (directly) to see you? Unless, of course, you either really like cruising, need the attention, or are getting paid a huge appearance fee.

Some years ago, before I got into cruising, I would hang out with fellow soap opera fans Some had just returned from a cruise on which there was some actors. It wasn't a charter cruise, but a cruise you would book through the agency handling the group. Rates were higher, but included access to the events (in other words, you wouldn't be able to just pop into the lounge where fans got to meet the actors or interact with them (one event was where a few fans got selected to read a love scene with a male actor).

I remember these friends' reviews included mention of whether the actors were truly accessible or just doing the minimum.

Most likely on any cruise you'll be on (unless it's a very small ship), there will be some groups, whether themed, family reunions, school reunions. Most of the time, hopefully, you won't be inconvenienced (popular venues taking over, etc.) or maybe even be aware of them.

As someone suggested, you can google your ship and sailing date and see if anything pops up. Won't mean you'll be able to find every group. But usually you don't need to worry.

Well I guess some people must want to see some of the performers old or not

The Malt Shop cruise which we booked in Dec is sold out already for Nov on the Eurodam they have a waitlist

It is a full charter so you will not be inconvenienced by the performers or groups of people sailing

Only those that WANT to be on the ship will be

YMMV

I remember reading about a certain older "Southern" cook PD who had a cruise. The other passengers reported that she surrounded herself with family and staff to limit her time with the people who paid to be with her and spent lots of time in the casino. The group was disappointed.

If you're talking about who I think you're talking about, then I saw her on another show where she was close to her family, so these revelations don't surprise me. Lots of people like to gamble - including those you might not suspect - so, again, I'm not too surprised.
