Now I Have Heard Everything

DW and I were talking about a Panama Canal cruise we took a couple of months ago. She told me she attended a trivia game aboard the ship where some people were using smart phones and tablets to look up the answers.

This is the update on the people I played against a few years ago

-- they brought a pile of reference books with them to trivia.

That was probably the cruise we were on. The same group of people did seem to win most of the time. We always had a team of 4 and we finally won one on the second to last day. the prizes were probably the best we have ever won on Princess they were drinking bottles. We were surprised how many people congratulated us on winning.

I've read that some passengers on multiple cruises keep the questions & research the answers to questions they got wrong before the next cruise.

I don't attend & not judging those who enjoy trivia however I can't understand those who are so intent on winning that they stack the deck to ensure winning.

You are right. We saw this happen.

I bet those people who were cheating at trivia are among those who have their automatic gratuities removed from their onboard account and buy one all inclusive drink package and get drinks for their spouse and friends.

You came to that conclusion simply because they were looking up answers on their Smartphone during a stupid, inconsequential trivia game? What next? Lacing everyone's drink with Anthrax to wipe out the competition?

Wish I could do that in the casino!:D

Quite pathetic.

However, given some of the foolishness I've been eyewitness to on cruise ships - - I am not surprised.

Amazing that people would squander costly data to win a prize of little value.

Ah, but to the cheaters, it's not a stupid, inconsequential game. That's the point.

The first and only cruise my DH and I played trivia on we were a team of just us 2 and made it to a playoff. At that point the other team complained because we weren't 6 people!

You should have looked at them very seriously and said "Oh, there are 6 of us. Both of us have multiple personalities!" You would probably have enjoyed the looks on their faces, especially if you would have added "Do you know the term for that condition?" and then walked away!

Maybe they need to replenish their Ebay items! :) It never ceases to amaze me the giveaway items for sale there!

People have been taking cruise trivia too seriously for years. In 1986, I was accused of being a "ringer"! I hadn't been playing but at the end of the cruise, a team was a player short so I joined. Question was, what is a deltiologist? I knew the answer, post card collector. No one knew what question would come up, but people were mad. It was over coffee mugs, each of us got a mug. I didn't play for years after that experience! :) :D

Had the same experience. Just happen to know the answer to an unusual question...what part of the body is the zygomatic bones located in? Answer: Cheek bone.

Just happened to be taking an anatomy class at the time. :p

Like to play, and not really part of a team...just to see if I know the answers....keeps my brain going...

I understand, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're going stiff the crew on their tips, or share a drink package.

Wow.....

I've cruised only once before and had heard about trivia contests on ships. Since I'm reasonably intelligent and normally enjoy lively competition, I was looking forward to playing and sharing some good spirit on my 14-day Med cruise next month. However, after reading this thread about the cheating (which truthfully just blows me away) and WAY over-the-top drama, it actually sounds less than fun and maybe even a little unpleasant. I'm going to take a pass.

I think the idea is that if they cheat on one thing, they will cheat on others. Maybe not, but a cheater is a cheater.

If a person will cheat to get a $1 trinket, do you really trust them not to cheat to get an $8 drink of save $70+ on gratuities? My dad warned me when I was young that people exist who will get more pleasure out of screwing someone out of a dime than out of earning a dollar honestly. 60 years of life has taught me that my dad was correct.

You might want to go to a trivia game just to watch the players. It can sometimes be entertaining.

I'd raise my hand and ask,

"Is there a trivia contest later for folks who don't look up answers on their cell phones?"

or

"On my last cruise, they discovered folks looking up trivia answers on their phones and put them off the ship at the next port. Is that going to happen this time?"

We've played a few times and, while we haven't won, it was fun. Don't let all the drama detailed here get to you. Remember, this is CC where even small things get blown up into major issues.

Unfortunately, some of the passengers playing are extremely rude, especially if they don't agree with how one has scored their answer sheet. I politely said that if they didn't like how their answer sheet was scored, they should take it up with the cruise staff person that was over seeing the trivia. The man continued to scream at me and their team lost anyway. Sorry, but I don't go on vacation to put up with other people's rude behavior. I still go to trivia sometimes because my dad really likes it, but when my husband and I cruise on our own, we don't play trivia.

I don't do trivia. Honestly I'm not that good at it unless its about cooking, family or poker.

I would love to be a fly on the wall watching, "The Real Cruise Trivia players on Princess Cruises" just like the reality shows..this should be entertaining to watch.

As I mature, I get a kick at how people take themselves so seriously over the most unserious situations. :D

Back to the original statement of using "smart phones" to get answers well that's just sad. Really sad.

It's always a bit odd when the "official" answer is obviously incorrect. Of course it does no good for someone to argue with the "official" answer but some still want to argue the point. One of the last times we attended trivia the person running it stated up front that there would be no disputing the answers. She was given a list of questions and a list of answers and was sticking to it. I can certainly understand that position. I knew one of her answers was incorrect but so what? It is, at most, a very minor irritation. It's a dorky game for dorky prizes. We played as a team of 2 and did very well (although we didn't win). We played another day with another couple and didn't do as well but had fun anyway.

I certainly wouldn't tell anybody to stay away from trivia just because there are a few idiots onboard. Idiots abound everywhere. It's just part of life. I have far more serious things to worry about than idiots at trivia. If I did find some aggressive clowns at trivia I might skip it for the rest of the cruise but wouldn't skip it as a general rule just "in case" there were going to be jerks there.

My wife and I work at a pier during the cruise season. Two of the reasons we work there is we enjoy the people we work with and we enjoy even more the people we meet going on the cruises and coming off the cruises. 99.99% of the ones who are cruising are absolutely great to work with and talk to. They're going on a cruise (which most of them have never been on before) and they are excited and can't wait to get on board or they're coming off a cruise and had a great time and are still excited about the experience. The other 0.01%? We just look at them, are polite to them and think to ourselves "Thank god I'm not married or living with that person!" and wait for that next smiling face to come along!

We keep saying that we ought to write a book about our experiences at the pier, but we'd have to label it as fiction because nobody would believe some of the stuff that would be in it!!:D:eek:
