Travel dates are August 26 thru September 7: In terms of weather, what can I expect? Lows, highs, rainy days???

All of the above :)

Over the last few years, September, just as the kids go back to school, has turned out to be very pleasant.

We did a cruise to Norway, Shetland Islands, Iceland, Belfast, Dublin and Glasgow in late September, early October last year.

The weather was very nice. We had some rain while in Dublin, but none elsewhere. Temps were in the high 60s and 70s. The cruise was out of Copenhagen and we missed a port in Norway as well as the Faroe Islands due to a cat 2 Hurricane. We encountered some 40 ft waves getting around the storm and many on the ship were sea sick (not us). However, that storm did not hit the BI, but Norway.

It is really difficult to say but as usual for any UK cruise be prepared for changeable weather so dress in layers which can be discarded or added to as the day progresses. My OH never goes anywhere without an umbrella which he says is his insurance against rain...... but it often comes in handy! I would definitely pack a light waterproof jacket for possible cooler temperatures and showers, as well as a woolly jumper just in case. If you go to the BBC website you can find a weather forecast for each port you're visiting and it gets more accurate obviously the closer to the date. It also gives you the general outlook for the month ahead so that might help a bit.

"Rain before 7 - fine before 11"

"In Ireland, if it isn't raining it is just about to"

The reason Brits always talk about the weather is that it is always changing and never predictable. T-shirt, fleece and lightweight waterproof jacket should cover most eventualities.

We did about the same dates last year around the UK. The weather was perfect for the whole two weeks no rain very pleasant.

The average high temperature in Dover in September is 19C / 66F, the average low in Lerwick is 8C / 46F, so your range is likely to be between about 40 and 75. Rain on about 10 days per September in Dover, 16 in Lerwick, but that's only talking about small amounts of rain. Heavy rain much less often. If you're expecting the British Isles to have a single homogenous climate, you'll be wrong.

  • 2 weeks later...

Weather is weather and you just never know.

We were in London on July 25. Normally I would have expected weather in 70's/80's (F) but it was quite a bit cooler and rainy. Yes, welcome to the UK.

On our cruise we missed four ports due to unseasonably windy and rainy weather.

Things happen.

Took a crossing last September from UK to USA and the weather was wonderful. No rain. Warmer than usual. Calm seas. The norm is usually quite different as it was for us when we crossed from Dover to NYC same month in 2004.

As they say, you just never know.

Keith
