Get your flu shot!

Lots of people get very sick after a flu shot and that is why I have never taken one.

The flu shot is a cocktail of dead virus that will not make you sick.

People that get very sick after a flu shot were going to get sick anyway.

It's your choice whether you get a flu shot or not but your reasoning is flawed.

I totally second that! I used to get a 'goose egg' inflammation on my arm and not feel so hot after a flu shot, which gave my husband a convenient excuse not to get one. I've since learned to direct the nurse to the area I where I don't get a reaction, (just at the outside edge of the muscle), and have no more problems. Nor does my hubby, whom I escort. ;)

Everyone needs to get a flu shot if at all possible.

Not true but you can die of the flu or get sick and pass it on to someone who ends up with a bad case.

More than 25 years ago I was so ill from the flu that I passed out and hit my face on a tile floor. Luckily I had neither a concussion nor busted cheekbones but my black eye and bruised face lasted longer than the miserable flu. I haven't missed a flu shot since (and haven't gotten the flu).

I actually got my nurse practitioner degree at a prestigious university.

The flu shot can cause allergic reactions and one in a million chance of Guillian barre syndrome. It cannot cause other illnesses or the flu. You can get a low grade fever and feel cruddy for a few days but that is your body responding to the vaccine and building immunity. If you get other illnesses, it was not the flu shot, it was going to happen anyway.

The flu kills over 30,000 people in the US alone every year.

This year's vaccine is a good match for the flu strains that are coming out this year.

Thanks for speaking up.

Wish more people would believe in science and not whatever they read on Facebook.

Dittos to that. The biggest cause of all of the anti-vaccination reaction is all of the anecdotal "evidence" that is floating around on the Internet ("I read it on the Internet so it must be true"). So here is ours': For several years we have always gotten flue shots and only a couple of times have we been sick with the flu (or even much else "viral" for that matter). Not saying that the flu shot was the reason, but, not saying that it isn't.

Good health to all however you accomplish it.

YMMV

I confess that Dudette always has a reaction to her flu shot which causes her to be sickly for a couple of days. However, she has MS and has an oppressed immune system so a day or two of not feeling well is a whole lot better than being in bed for a week with the flu.

I disagree - you might not get the full flu but I wasn't feeling well for around a week afterwards with a high temperature. It is a known possible side effect.

We have never had the issue. However, I think that I will take my chances and get the shot. I like the odds of a little discomfort versus the misery of a full-blown bout with the flu (been there, done that! YUCK!).

Again, YMMV.

It wasn't spreading that noticeably as we were on that sailing also, and hadn't noticed it at all. No one in our group of 12 was I'll at all, nor were we aware of any illness sweeping the ship - no coughing or hacking out of normal that we noticed. And none of our crew friends were I'll or reporting any spreading illness either.. Sorry if you or yours were ill, but it certainly wasn't spreading noticeably amongst the rest of us...

Odd the Captain came on the public address Wed, Thurs, and Friday talking about the flu onboard, symptoms, precautions, and directions for medical care if there was not a flu outbreak. We had coughing people on every excursion and many talking about relatives being confined to their cabins. In Ketchikan our tour was held up because a number of people's cruise cards had been flagged as not allowed to leave the ship due to flu in their group but they were eventually cleared and allowed on the tour. There were 7 people from 3 separate groups just on our tour which had 50ish people. Heck they even took away the self serve cream in the IC too.

Its not new....

We have seen extreme cruise hack on the last few cruises we have been on.

I blame it on the ventilation systems, especially in the stateroom. :(

UH, OK. I'll bite. What self-serve ice cream in the IC? Haven't seen that (self-serve ice cream) on any of the 14 Princess cruises that we have been on. And, btw, the IC has only been around for a few years.

The pharmacist we talked to on our way to Anchorage at the end of the land tour said that Alaska is much less humid than the lower 48, and that the dry air leads to coughing. She also said that the pollen count was still high. Both of those things can play a role in people getting sick. add that to the large groups spending time mashed together indoors, and the upper respiratory stuff is going to happen.

Will get my flu shot as soon as GP says I can after the pneumonia. I do get an evening of low grade fever generally, and a sore arm. But if it even lessens the effects of the flu it's worth it to me. I figure if the dead or attenuated virus gives me a fever, the live virus would put me 6 feet under.

Please post this known possible side effect facts origin.

Side effects of the flu vaccine

The influenza vaccine can cause a range of side effects. In children under five years of age, these reactions may be more obvious. Common side effects of flu vaccine include:

drowsiness or tiredness

muscle aches

localised pain, redness and swelling at the injection site

occasionally, an injection-site lump (nodule) that may last many weeks but needs no treatment

low-grade temperature (fever).

Managing fever after immunisation

Common side effects following immunisation are usually mild and temporary (occurring in the first few days after vaccination). Specific treatment is not usually required. There are a number of treatment options that can reduce the side effects of the vaccine including:

drinking extra fluids and not overdressing if there is a fever

Although routine use of paracetamol after vaccination is not recommended, if fever is present, paracetamol can be given – check the label for the correct dose or speak with your pharmacist, (especially when giving paracetamol to children)

Pam is quite correct, flu shots very from region to region depending upon what type of flu is expected in that region so the one in CA may not protect you from the flu strain that is going the rounds in say FL.

In the USA, the flu shots are aimed at the same strains everywhere in the country. Not different in CA from FL.

Update on hubs-- the antibiotics seem to be working. He woke up this morning talking like an adult rather than a 4 year old. Actually was hungry for breakfast.

I think we are still going to take it easy today, maybe catch a movie or something. If he is doing even better tomorrow we will head into the city for a wee nosey.

Key word "SIDE EFFECTS" not sickness.

Many vaccinations can cause "side effects". ;)

Flu shots are starting on Sept 26 at our HMO, the day we sail. :)

I use therapeutic grade essential oils and use a diffuser onboard. Hopefully, we will stay well.

Patti

I have already had my flu shot for this year ( early, as I do every year) and normally I have no affects at all, but this year I did feel under the weather for several days afterwards. If you do have any reaction like me, try to get it a couple of weeks before you sail, I think it takes a couple of weeks to get working anyway. As a cancer survivor was advised to always get one and I do. Even though I felt bad for a few days - I feel it is worth it.:)

My question:

Can you explain your therapeutic grade essential oils and use a diffuser ?

I am interested.

DH and I have both had cancer surgery, so we both get our flu shots every year , also we take care of grandchildren on a regular basis, and you know they bring everything home, so the shot is necessary. We also got the pneumonia shot about 8 years ago and just got the Previnar pneumonia shot as additional protection against other strains. Having said that, yes we do get a sore arm for a few days, and a bit listless, but we get over that. I realize that each person reacts differently, but for us, we are glad we are able to get the shots.
