Is royal caribbean too much a party boat cruise?

Recommended Posts

Keep seeing reports of people drinking way to much, falling overboard, violence with a younger cruise group and wonder if social media has Royal as the cruise line of choice for party down. I do know rccl pushes the booze hard when aboard.

Are you referring to an old YouTube video that claimed this? It's completely untrue!

RCCL has always had a relaxed atmosphere. Its reputation is not based on the on-board parties, which are very tame, but for the activities and entertainment. That, and its newer ships (which are considered to be destinations in themselves).

As with many things, it depends on your definition of "party." First, although booze is widely available, I have never seen or heard it being "pushed." On every cruise I've been on there have been some obviously heavy drinkers, but not many, and I have no problem ignoring them. It's very much the case that your cruise is what you make of it.

I rarely drink (on board or off), and I feel like Royal is exactly my kind of "party," with or without alcohol, because there is so much else to do. My husband, on the other hand, even though he drinks a little more than I do, feels like Royal is too much of a party, at least on the 3-day Bahama cruises (which perhaps draw a different type of crowd than a more expensive 7-day or European cruise).

My aunt and uncle only cruise Holland America and maybe Princess or Celebrity once in a while. They are older, as is the crowd on those ships, and there is less to do. While I'm sure those are enjoyable cruises, and the one Princess cruise I took was great, that's not my kind of party for repeat cruising.

Trolling troll is trolling.

Oddly, I don't think the OP is trolling in favor of another cruise line. If you look at their previous posts, they have been on RCCL at least twice. I can't tell if the third time was with RCCL because Carnival also has a ship called Liberty.

wow, my question was just that, a question and it was about social media and how the younger croud feels about cruise ships. The last 3 overboard tragedys were aboard rccl. What is a troll?

I read a report that called the person that went overboard on Oasis a jumper. I don't know about the others. No mention of alcohol playing a role in this one.

And a "troll" is someone who posts a statement with the deliberate intent of inciting an emotional response (usually a negative one) from other readers. On these boards, it usually comes from fans of other cruise lines or people who are upset with RCCL (for one reason or another).

You don't have a lot of posts here, but the majority of the ones you have are on the RCCL board. That, to me, is evidence that your intent wasn't to troll, but to post a legitimate question.

Just and FYI, there's been 23 passenger overboards in 2015. RCI had 3 of them.

Thanks for that data.

In reality, when I read the original thread title...I thought it might be a joke or sarcasm thread.

Its pretty well known that Carnival own's the title as the "Fleet of party boats"...not to mention the nickname "Walmart of the Seas" for being so cheap and executing their bargain-basement maintenance.

All someone has to to is about 20 minutes of Google searches to see the "cultures" on various cruise lines.

While there will inevitably be a small group of distruptors and poor judgement passengers...for the most part...each cruise line tends to draw a pretty consistent demographic set.

If you feel that way, don't sail on Royal. Easy.

When you say "keep seeing them" - what frequency are you talking about? Once a week, once a month, once a year? And compare that with the number of cruises there are.

Every 20 minutes!!!! (for the past day and a half)

The guy was not sober.

DH and I do not drink at all, and royal is our favorite cruise line. never have i felt pressured to buy drinks, nor have i been surrounded by rowdy drunks or anything like that (and we are often on the promenade or in a club until 2 or 3 a.m. - we are night people). sure, we've seen drunk people, but that holds true for all 4 cruise lines we've been on, as well as pretty much any time we go to dinner or a show in the city. certainly nothing overwhelming or out of hand, and no one totally blotto.

fwiw, my hard-drinking friends prefer disney. weird, but true!

Agree that you can not generalize. It is always according to the ship/crowd you are sailing with. We actually took a Carnival cruise once that we thought was so quiet it was boring...contrary to the Carnival reputation. We are not partiers, but do enjoy watching sail away dancing etc...

as there can be lots of children on some sailings (summer and holidays) but I have not seen any truly atrocious "party hearty" behavior on RCI and we have sailed several RCI ships.

I also don't think alcohol is pushed on RCI. Sure, it is available, but no one forces it upon anyone.

I have only been on the Carnival cruise and witness drunks. College kids treating the help pretty bad. I felt so bad for the help. Also I saw a 70 year old drunk with a 20 year old girl. He couldn't hardly stand up. He was making a fool of him self.

But never have seen drunks on the RC ever. We have been on 3 times. We don't hit the bars late at night either. But I am in the casinos till 2 or 3:00. a.m. Nothing exciting there.

I don't think Royal is a party cruise and I don't think they push the the liquor. I am not a drinker so I do notice when people are drunk and I don't remember seeing anyone falling down drunk on a Royal ship. However, I do remember seeing two older women on HAL come back in a cab from a shore excursion and they were quite inebriated. The crew had to help them to their cabin. :)

Don't believe everything you read in the National Enquirer. I do know from our RCCL Cruises they do not push the booze. It's all about choices.

With P&O a couple of years ago. Just flown into Barbados and because there was a delay getting on a minibus at the airport a Scottish man was swearing at staff and complaining. She handled it really calmly, but firm and said one more word and the Police would be called and he would be arrested. The thoughts of missing the ship and spending time in a cell had the desired effect. Not one word was spoken afterwards.
