Sun - Casino closed while in Chilean waters

Just got the voicemail message today. When we reach the chilean waters around midnight tonight the casino will be closed while we are in chilean waters. So the points redemption is already today.

Due to the short notice I would guess that NCL was rather surprised by that as well. No idea yet how it will be handled for the regular 14 day South American cruises following, if I hear anything I will post an update.

Seems to have caught them off guard.

In July, on our 7-night Alaskan cruise round-trip Seattle, the casino was closed on the last day/night and the duty-free shops open and close several times because they cross in and out of Canadian and US waters.

Before my South American Cruise I did tons of research. One thing I did was read every review on South American cruises. There I learned of this fact that the casinos are closed in Chile. Therefore, it was not a surprise to me.

However, my cruise originated in Chile so we didn't get to gamble the first few days. Once we hit Argentina it was time to gamble

The last information is that the casino will stay closed for the remaining repositioning and probably open again after we leave Ushuaia. They told me that they are still working on that and hope that for the regular 14 day cruises three won't have to be closed for such a long continuous time. If something already changes for this cruise they will keep us informed.

I'm surprised at this. If the ship was sailing out in the open sea (Pacific Ocean) the casino should remain open, but when it enters the Chilean waters (fjords) the casino closes.

See my South American cruise review - the casino is mentioned in post #12. The link to the review is in my signature.

When departing Valpa the casino opened for a night, a full day and another night before we entered the waters to go to Puerto Montt. Then it remained closed for 6 days, reopening when we'd rounded the Horn, on the way to Falklands.

I guess, things have changed in the past 5 years ....

I love Puerto Montt and the nearby town of Puerto Varas and Frutillar. It is magical to go there and see the Osorno volcano and the whole volcano/lakes region. Definitely get off the ship and head over to do a day tour of the lakes. Lago todos los santos is emerald in color - spectacular. Frutillar is a German settlement and the beer is amazing - with real Kuchen with a local Chile twist.

I flew to the south of Chile and think it is one of the most amazing sites on earth.

Enjoy!
