Concierge lounge

We're just off the Marina - an absolutely outstanding experience and truly perfect cruise about which I need to post soon. It was our 3rd on Oceania but our first at Concierge level (Deck 10). In all honesty, the best part of the lounge was their copy of the Wall Street Journal and the chance for a wee pastry while reading it. It was a little frustrating to note that a wider - and fresher - array of snacks during the day was available around the corner from Barista's versus the unchanging skimpy selection in the Concierge Lounge. We never approached the gentleman at the Concierge Desk - didn't need anything done - and from our times in the lounge he was usually sitting there alone with no "customers." We did enjoy and utilize a few of the other Concierge perks, but the Lounge was pretty marginal.

Imo if they did away with both these lounges few people would care. Not a big perk.

While I also share your point of view, from my observation there are many that don't agree with us. On my last Riviera cruise, 25 days, it was frequently packed, even after they pulled the snacks due to noro.

I can think of so many places on the ship I'd much rather hang out than a windowless inside box.

Windowless inside box -- a perfection description

Where I think that this discussion goes off the rails is in lumping the Executive Lounge with the Concierge Lounge.

If one books a Suite on whatever Line they sail, the Oceania Lounges may suffer by comparison, although, to be fair the Butler does make a Suite on Oceania, special. I never liked having to run down to the Suite lounge to access my Suite "goodies".

Still, the people who exclusively book Concierge never get access to a Lounge, except on Oceania.

Yes. It's available only on Oceania. The issue of whether it has value is a different question Perhaps another way to look at it is that it might be worth it for cAbin location or access to the spa deck or the ability to book specialties early - maybe -- but not for the lounge. Just my opinion

Bitbob's and other's comments often repeat a familiar tone on these threads. Since they choose not to use, or have no use for a particular perk, they believe it should be eliminated. I have seen many similar comments in respect to the casino from those that don't gamble. They don't utilize the Casino, therefore it is wasted space. Should people feel the same about the Library area aboard if they never utilize it. How about the swimming pool for those that never use it, just eliminate it I suppose? The O ships contain a large number of perks along with public areas to meet the needs/desires of a broad swath of people whose needs/desires maybe different from mine. I see no reason to eliminate any of those areas, but to allow everyone an opportunity to enjoy the various ships areas as they desire or are granted entry.

How can anyone make comments about the Concierge Lounge being a windowless box, where there are tiny inside cabins without even the view of the hallway?

I believe that posters are simply trying to give their opinion of the "Concierge" and "Executive" lounge - not argue about it. Since we know that Oceania executives read these boards, it gives them an insight to our thoughts.

In terms of inside cabins, guests that are permitted into these lounges would not opt for an inside cabin. The one use that I did find for the Executive Lounge was being able to use the computer without being in the overly warm computer room (hopefully the air conditioning in that area of the Riviera has been fixed). Other than the computers, I find this the only areas on the ship that reeks "class system". It is for this reason alone that I feel they should not be onboard these "almost luxury" ships.

Travelcat;

Are you equally as outraged about PH suites and above having Butlers and how that reeks of a class system? I'm sure allowing the different level of suites to have early specialty restaurant reservation privileges reeks to you also. Personally, I, and I believe the majority of other O passengers, don't get so worked up on these issues as you do, and I doubt that O's management takes a lot away, on these issues, based on the postings of such a small minority of passengers that post here.

And yet you were all excited about the Haven on Norwegian, so it can't be the class system itself that irks you....

tell us why the two are different

I never said it should be eliminated. Please don't misrepresent what I said. I said if it were eliminated I doubt most people would care. Quite a different statement. My statements speaks to what I perceive as the value of the lounges to most - not just myself . I was not advocating anything

As for inside cabins some choose to book them. I have good friends who have done more than 20 cruises in an inside and love it. Doesn't make it less of a windowless box. Most people with inside cabins don't hang out in them. The lounges imo are not a place I would hang out

JimandStan - you must have me confused with someone else as I know little about the Haven and only made reference to it (on another board) as an example of a "class" system. Definitely not excited about it nor have I ever seriously considered sailing on NCL.

pinotlover: Obviously, on all cruise lines, the more you pay the more benefits you get. The difference with true luxury cruise lines is that the benefits are not visible to others. For instance, in the top suite (a Master/Owners Suite), you have a huge suite, a butler, bar and other amenities, however, once you step foot outside the suite, you are treated the same as everyone else.

Luxury cruise lines do not offer extra dining reservations just because you are in an upper suite and boarding is first come - first served.

Yes - I do object to obvious class differentiations more than most Oceania guests. However, quite a few luxury cruise line passengers look at premium and premium plus cruise lines as a lower cost alternative to luxury lines. Crystal, Seabourn, Silversea and Regent customers may not think that the special, visible, obvious class distinctions that exist on some premium cruise lines is something they want.

Again - just my opinion that everyone is entitled to.

I, personally, enjoy the Lounge. I take my early morning walk, stop by the lounge for a cup of coffee and maybe a pastry to take to my stateroom to enjoy while getting ready for the day. It is quite handy if you have an early tour. You can get a snack without going topside to breakfast (however, breakfast is my favorite meal--well sometimes).

If you come back later in the afternoon from a tour, you can stop by and pick up a snack.

They have the papers available. And I love having the computer available. I met some lovely folks who I might never have met

Depending on who the Concierge is, they can and will do many things for you.

I think the Lounge is lovely, if you take advantage of it. I think O did a great idea with the Lounge, but as said above, everything isn't for everybody. At least it is available to those of us who enjoy it.

Which I will be in for 32 days coming up, LOL.

It is what it is. I don't plan on spending much time other than sleeping and changing clothes there. Just like when I had access to the lounges, other than grabbing a snack or soda there I didn't spend any time there, not my thing. I have to problem if others like to hang out there, and I've never mentioned anything being eliminated that I don't use. In that case a HUGE part of the ship would be eliminated, pool, spa, artist room, library, computer room, card room, barristas, and I"m sure more.

Sorry if I hit a nerve.

I think that you deserve an award as the funniest post on this thread:D While I have seen people visit the lounges in bathrobes and one person brushing his teeth (yuck), we have not seen anyone sleeping or changing their clothes there.

LHT28 - with all due respect, we are simply voicing our opinions - not trying to change anything (nor are we grumpy). In terms of the "class system", again, it is just my opinion!

I was actually taking about the inside room. Not the lounge.

At least in our experiences, the opposite is true.

Pardon me for noticing, but you're playing semantics.

Passengers who book the huge Suites on the luxury lines may choose to eat in their Suites more often than in the Restaurants, but that does not mean that they don't have unlimited access to them.

It's an exclusivity thing, not a reservations thing.

You are correct - my DH saw the person brushing their teeth - we both have seen bathrobes. I'll try to be more precise in the future:cool:
